  • 10 riffs from proto-punk legends The Stooges. I did one a while ago of Iggy Pop stuff, but this is all Stooges or 'Iggy and The Stooges' as known on the Raw Power album.

Totally agree. Both Asheton and Williamson created legendary riffs, all of them very personal in their style but also aligned to the Stooges sound. Many of us would kill to be the authors of only of these riffs
Johnny Marr himself names "Gimme danger" and "Shake appeal" between the top songs he would have liked to compose ("Waterloo sunset" is one of them too)

To me, Ron Asheton is just as important as Hendrix when it comes to people who totally changed the guitar. The primal raw of his riffs and the absolutely gut wrenching free form noodling, plus that tone! Still the best fuzz tone ever (well, that and William Reid’s)!
James Williamson is also in there with a shout. I mean a band with two dudes that totally changed the conception of a rock n roll guitar players. It’s insane to look back on.

This is a perfect demonstration of how to make memorable riffs out of very simple harmonic materials using phrasing, repetition and syncopation. I would like to have heard '1969' and 'No Fun' from the first album, but otherwise this is a great introductory selection. Another video drawing on the songs from the period after 'Funhouse', which are a little more sophisticated, would be great.
