Started my Jeep journey January of 2021. Purchased a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ sport out of a barn in Toledo Ohio with only 70,300k for $2,200 with minor rust and and it only needed a battery to start. This channel has helped me in such a way that when the Jeep is “done” I will gladly do my best to return the favor. Thank you so much to the whole team for helping to get me Jeepin 😜
Changed the Fel-pro gasket today, 1999 Jeep Cherokee, great instructional video!! no issues other than the bolt near the firewall was hard to reach, needed a 6 inch extension and the pivoting adapter to remove and reinstall. Thank you for the virtual help.
Thanks great video! I broke one of the breather caps, it was kind of brittle and cost about $20 to replace. I also broke the plastic clip on the cruise control linkage but found a replacement for the plastic piece only (luckily) it was ATP automotive YR-100 Dentent Cable End.
just a question, i ordered a valve cover gasket some time ago for my 94 Cherokee L6 engine, and found that the gasket was totally different that what i have.. how many types of covers are there? also, my valve covers are broken now and i need to replace them, will the other type fit on my engine?
Great video. You have inspired me to fix my leaky valve cover :) One question... How well does the head need to be cleaned? And how should I go about doing so? The same nylon brush and simple green you used on the valve cover? Should I be weary of getting de-greaser on the rockers? This video does not show that process and I assume that is not an easy task since there is so much clutter. Thanks again!!!
Great video. I was able to remove that bolt near the firewall with the correct combination of socket and extension. Having a good set of extensions is very helpful - even the tiny one in my set that’s like one inch is useful, ‘twas in this case. Hopefully installation will go smooth as far as being able to use a torque wrench accurately goes.
Hey so I have a 98 grand Cherokee with 240k miles. Owned since high school (2008). Valve cover leaks. Replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses. I noticed after I power washed some of the oil off around the valve cover and blew all the water out, I saw some smoke come from behind the valve cover. I drove home and I didn’t smell it and it smelled like oil, could that just be it burning off excess crap that I might have dislodged from washing it? And is there any other things I should consider since it’s the 4.0 as far as repairs at this mileage? I had the trans rebuilt in 2014
Hello, I'm a senior female trying this on my own, due to my finances and wanting to learn. Am I going over my head and should let a professional do it? I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder. I would appreciate your opinion.
Margie Bush You'll be fine doing it on your own after watching this video. I thought I was in over my head too, being as I never did anything engine related besides oil. However the hardest part for me was trying to keep the paint from getting scratched on my valve cover.
Hello, I have a 98 dodge 1500 with the magnum 5.9L and the passenger side valve cover is leaking. Do i have to replace both the left and right valve cover gaskets or just the broken one? Thanks for your help
Is it typical with the fel-pro gaskets to come with metal on them? The one i got here has metal around the whole flat part of the gasket where it fits the head. Does that get pulled off?
I am definitely inspired but the cold winter outside makes this a spring project how did you clean the gasket mount should I clean my Engine bay before hand so I don’t have to worry about debris
One (major) thing missing was how to reasonably clean - and with what - the surface of the head. De-greaser? Brake part cleaner? Scrub with a brush first? I'm getting ready to do this myself and would like to know
Yet another "Hell yeah I can do this myself" vid, awesome. The only question I have is how would you know if there was a leak past the gasket, and if there was is it a case of tightening the bolts even more?
Any videos on how to fix a hood that flew up on me while driving. It won't open up all the way. I have to remove the windshield washer plate to open the hood up. Any suggestions?
I found it very interesting that this valve cover gasket does not have any of the cover hold down bolts go through it, but is held in place by the rigidity of the gasket itself and outside compression from the cover.
+Lonewlf7676 There is also a ridge on the inside of the valve cover. He just bought a really nice, expensive gasket that happens to include the rigid parts.
Anyone know if I can use brake cleaner to clean the valve cover and engine block housing? I know they said simple green but I already have the brake cleaner at home from my brake job. Thanks!
Do you need to drain the oil from the car before removing the Valve Cover?? Seeing as I pour oil into my '04 Liberty through an opening in the valve cover I imagine it would be a huge mess to remove the valve cover without draining the oil first @bleepinjeep
Hey bro love the channle!!! You have helped me a lot so I'm gonna help you on this one I know others have said the 17ft pd torque is wrong and it is so here is the help it's 85 in pounds bro not ft that converts to 7.083333333 pounds so 7 ft pds is wrong also who ever posted that bud 85 inch pounds is the perfect spec guys :) #jeep4life broskis :) have fun breaking and fixing your jeeps!!! Keep the videos coming please!!!! Bleepin jeeps rocks!!!
Super Clean or the knock off Purple Power do wonders my friend and they're biodegradable. Abide by the instructions, apply to a cool engine and do not allow it to dry. It will oxidize everything aluminum if you let it dry.
Has anyone had a ZJ (1998) that had problems with abs speed sensors? My abs is on and I replaced the sensor but the light stayed on. Will unplugging the battery make a difference? I’m thinking about taking it back to the place I had do my tires and see if they can figure it out if I can’t
this video should be taken down. how many people below have commented they broke there nuts. JUST TAKE IT DOWN @BLEEPINJEEP. you can re-edit the video!!!!!!!!!!
My green '98 two door xj is from Canada and I have a '99 in my garage right now from Canada that shows many signs of your harsh winters and salted roads :)
i have a 1997 jeep grand cherokiee i have a problem about my oil gasket my jeep start but making noise and the oil have metal pieces????????can i wana know if u can help me
This video came just in time in my feed. My 98 Grand Cherokee is seeping out oil from her gasket, saturating down the entire engine. Do y'all remember what gasket was shown here in the video?
@Bleepin Jeep Awesome. Just replaced the valve cover gasket this past week 😄. Although same engine, it was a tight squeeze. But everything went smoothly. Even though I torqued at the factory spec of 88 in/lbs (roughly 7 ft/lbs I believe ) don't use a 1/2" drive torque wrench... Even if it's your only one. I snapped a couple bolts in the center. So I got them pretty snug and so far, no leaks 👍 We also have an extractor so I'm not worried about getting them out. But your video helped out alot and saved me alot of money if I were to take it somewhere. Next up is the oil pan gasket, rear main, and pinion seals.
at 6:50, factory spec should be 85 inch pounds or 7 foot pounds
THANKS MANE
Yep just snapped a bolt lol sweet

@@davidgomez3737 because I didn’t like the color.
That is the cleanest Jeep i have ever seen. Looks new!
Uh what? I’ve owned many cleaner jeeps of similar years
@@areject17 he gave a compliment. Relax jabroni.

Shoutout to Tim's unibrow
I’m watching this in 2023 and I’m still wondering how y’all haven’t hit 1m yet! 😮 love your channel

- Bought a 1993 4x4 from a county school board auction. These videos will help me a lot.
Thank you very much for your video I just picked up a 1998 Jeep Cherokee you guys just taught me how to replace my valve cover gasket
Thanks guys/ you may have just saved my 97 cherokee again!
Nice how-to! What oil do you run in that Jeep? The rockers look spotless.
Oil pan and pump 2 weeks ago thanks to you and now valve cover done thanks mate love from Australia

well done and the cleanest engine bay ever
What did you clean the head with where the old gasket was seated?
Hi .. I just bought 03 jeep is the valve cover gasket the same as 97 ?

I would assume thats just water and junk burning off. drive it till it explodes!

Are the valve covers internally regulated for crankcase pressure? I can't find a PCV valve available for my 91 xj 4.0L.
Pretty easy job to do. BUT DON'T OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLTS! B/C SNAPPP now you have a broken valve cover bolt! I would ONLY know from experience haha
"It's not going to the moon" lol
needs to explain how to how to clean head properly, but other then that a good video.
I am definitely inspired but the cold winter outside makes this a spring project how did you clean the gasket mount should I clean my Engine bay before hand so I don’t have to worry about debris
Use a razor or a rag or a non abrasive wheel.
Wow I was literally just thinking about doing this, and this video comes up, thanks a million dude now I know I can do it.
I was just about to search for this and it hit me first. Thank you for the video. I loved that gasket, where can I get that gasket please??
One (major) thing missing was how to reasonably clean - and with what - the surface of the head. De-greaser? Brake part cleaner? Scrub with a brush first? I'm getting ready to do this myself and would like to know
auto correct. is this the same process for a 4.0 on a 98tj wrangler?
Yet another "Hell yeah I can do this myself" vid, awesome.
The only question I have is how would you know if there was a leak past the gasket, and if there was is it a case of tightening the bolts even more?
2:44 where can I purchase the bracket for heater hoses? Mine broke off
How did this gasket hold up
Is this the same process and s results for 4.0 98tj wrangler?
Back here as always
What wheels are those on the black xj?!
Any videos on how to fix a hood that flew up on me while driving. It won't open up all the way. I have to remove the windshield washer plate to open the hood up. Any suggestions?
Is it possible to have a valve cover leak bad enough to cause a P0171 system lean code?
What was the tube up front of the cover he took off after the cables? Mines torn where it connects
It's 7 lbs not 17 lbs, your going to have a lot of missed of people with broken bolts if you don't edit that, otherwise it's a great video.
aJEEPforthebirds I did this at 9 lbs is that ok??
joel saravia did the bolts break? If not I would say your good lol
I did 55 and snapped one off
Use "inch" pounds
I found it very interesting that this valve cover gasket does not have any of the cover hold down bolts go through it, but is held in place by the rigidity of the gasket itself and outside compression from the cover.

no, the oil sits far below the valve cover
Im glad im not the only one that uses trees to hang parts occasionally lol
I just did this on my 99xj. Double check your torque. My factory service manual says 85 inch lbs. 17 foot lbs is way too tight!!!! That's 204 in lbs.
What year and engine was this? Nice video.
I6 98 I believe

yeah wish I read comments, I did 15 and broke one. I think a 2nd one is almost broken, going to order a new set of bolts and replace them all!
Very informative and straight forward. Thank you sir!
Thanks for the vid...answers allot of questions I had..keep up the good work and that jeep looks mint!!!
any videos on push rod replacement?
How do I tighten them with the rubber grommets in the way?
Great video! I was hoping I wouldn't have had to watch several.
Well done brother. Thanks for everything.
Please show me the cause and if possible the fix for water on the passenger side floor board after it rains on the XJ.
Whats the best way to clean off the head? Just take a rag and wipe it down?
Thanks just purchased a jeep cherokee and need to replace valve cover this video defiantly helped good work bro
that is one clean engine bay
Super Clean or the knock off Purple Power do wonders my friend and they're biodegradable. Abide by the instructions, apply to a cool engine and do not allow it to dry. It will oxidize everything aluminum if you let it dry.
so you just use the gasket itself and no silicone base glue?
use RTV
HAving trouble getting around the radiator hose?
great video! Replacing my 96 valve cover gasket today!
iv herd that you can use old oil as like grease or lubrication is this true I really love to recycle???
Has anyone had a ZJ (1998) that had problems with abs speed sensors? My abs is on and I replaced the sensor but the light stayed on. Will unplugging the battery make a difference? I’m thinking about taking it back to the place I had do my tires and see if they can figure it out if I can’t
Used 17 foot pounds and snapped a bolt
I'd be checking the cal on your wrench
Same
Dam bleepin her got you! He owes you. Lol it’s supposed to be 7 foot lbs
can you clean everything off when the cover is off or should i just leave all the oil on it
bleepinjeep what should i use
Donny Brader Super Clean/Purple Power and mostly Simple Green are the cleaners that I use.
TJH carb cleaner/ degrease
this video should be taken down. how many people below have commented they broke there nuts. JUST TAKE IT DOWN @BLEEPINJEEP. you can re-edit the video!!!!!!!!!!
p.s thank you for the help with getting the gasket changed it was very helpful thank y'all very much
Thanks for the info. It worked well and easy.
i can't believe how clean this 98 is, it's a shame that mine in Canada is way more destroyed by the winter
This is an unusually clean cherokee, all of the water and humidity is hell on any car up north!
My green '98 two door xj is from Canada and I have a '99 in my garage right now from Canada that shows many signs of your harsh winters and salted roads :)
very helpful and clean engine.. the order of tightening was great.
Where can I get one of those fresh air inlet caps that sits on the front of the valve cover? I need a new one.
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 17 inch pounds of torque. Anyone want to reply with the proper rating?
17ft/lbs of torque? You better edit that lol That's VERY wrong
You are the best my friend God bless you.
Also you should mention how brittle all those plastic retainers are after years on the engine, they break too easy upon removal
aJEEPforthebirds pull hoses away using a bungy cord, watch your eyes.
I literally did this this morning
How to Get the prop background such as your car as possible to respond to my question
Thank you for this video! Very helpful !!
great videos but *i think everyone should check the torque specs because they are incorrect and have not been corrected*
Haynes manual says;
28 in-lbs with RTV
55 in-lbs with permanent gasket
Does Tim have a channel as well? If so, what is the name of it?
I broke one of the bolts, how can I get it out?
Drill and tap is my guess but I could be wrong.
LUV A CLEAN ENJUN !
good video, very simple.
i have a 1997 jeep grand cherokiee i have a problem about my oil gasket my jeep start but making noise and the oil have metal pieces????????can i wana know if u can help me
drip some of the oil onto a piece of cardboard and hold it up to the sunlight and you will see distinct colors if there is metal filaments in the oil.
Great video!
This video came just in time in my feed. My 98 Grand Cherokee is seeping out oil from her gasket, saturating down the entire engine. Do y'all remember what gasket was shown here in the video?
more than likely a Fel-Pro
Fel-Pro VS50458R should be just the ticket for a '98 4.0L, whether XJ or ZJ

Where can I find some cool 2001 xj tail lights?
Clean engine bay. Nice video.
Nice job!
thanks for this video
links don't seem to be working...
I got there, was just a FYI for you.
Fel- pro gasket part number would have been good information to share, why didn't you?
maybe try 30 inch pounds of torque on those screws. That would be a little more then snug
:) Great video helped a lot.
Don't lose those metal caps (torque limiter sleeve) they do not make or offer those any where..
DUDE THANKS!
I am reading a service manual that calls for 75 in. lbs. or about 6 ft. lbs.
So. Can i just brakleen the hell out of it to clean the valve cover and let it dry
Bravo !
If you take the upper radiator hose loose you won't have to fight to get it off.
can someone put a ling for the gromits and metal pieces mine never had them
Seared a bolt, the torque wrench is a lie!
