From someone that has worked on all there own car maintenance for many years I do like your video. I do it the same way many times as you showed in your video. I have a good pointer to share with you and the others. Before doing the antifreeze flush and change find out what your cooling total capacity is and when you do the refill put in half the total capacity of undiluted antifreeze first before you add any distilled water. This way you end up with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Its that simple.
when flushing the block, you should restrict the bottom hose so the water backs up through the system, otherwise all your flushing is the waters path of least resistance if that makes sense. Your likely missing more then half of the system.
Side note, when doing this for overheating Its also a good time to spray/blow out the debris from the radiator fins. Spraying or blowing from the backside of the radiator towards the front to remove the grass, dirt, and debris that collects in the fins over time. It can really make a huge difference, especially on older vehicles that have collected a lot of debris. Just a thought.

I flushed my system a few times on my ZJ. Was clean but had a lot of scale and other buildup that I could see. Dumped half a gallon of cleaning vinegar in the system and the rest distilled water. After letting it run for a few days, I drained and refilled with water and couldn't believe the amount of buildup that came out. Like you said, it looked like chicken water but times 100. Thank you for the video!
Easier way to flush the whole system is just open/remove the petcock put hose in de-gas/reservoir to keep it full while draining start the car and let it idle until it reaches operating temp. Then the thermostat will open and you can rev it a little while keeping an eye on the temperature gauge and then shut the engine off after a few minutes. Remove the water hose let the water drain from the petcock then reinstall. Fill with distilled water and concentrate coolant at about 70% coolant because there is water left in the heater core/block so once it mixes it’ll be close enough to 50/50. Easy 👍🏻

Thank you for this detailed video. Lot other videos on youtube skip some important steps like draining the distilled water completely from engine block and heater core.
After your test drive you do not need to remove the radiator cap just check the coolant recovery bottle. As you saw it sucked fresh coolant into the system. Working as designed. 👍🏼
this is irrelevant since all the air will dump into the top of the radiator and stay there anyways. maybe a tiny pocket in the upper hose but the reservoir will resolve that for you without intervention. thats its purpose...
A hint to all for faster cooling: wrap the rad cap in a folded towel and put on leather winch gloves. Pop the cap to first click. It helps cool the engine faster. It opens the coolant to air and gives the coolant a proper place to vent the heat instead of slow dissipation to a closed system. Great vid Matt. 🤙
We need a video on how to install a drain petcock with a hose so you can drain every drop directly into a bucket. I'm tired of getting radiator showers as well. Since I've pulled engines 4 or 5 times you would think I would have done that by now. Also, another good reason to use only distilled water is electrolysis. That's where the rust in an engine comes from (especially if the engine is iron, and depending on where you live tap water's conductivity can vary greatly). Tap water (or any non-stilled water) has particles in it that make it electrically conductive. You actually get current flowing through the coolant system since all of the grounds for the vehicle end at the block. Electrons actually flow from the negative into the positive.
The automatic climate control is the only thing my current ZJ doesn't have that I miss from my previous one. Wish I could swap in the automatic climate control and the driver information center from another ZJ into my current one. Those 2 items were nice.
Don’t worry about clearing out the water, check this out. Let’s say your system holds 4 gallons of 50/50. What you do is pour 2 gallons of strait antifreeze in , then fill the rest up with water until it’s full. That way you know you got all the antifreeze in and it’s has a perfect 50/50 mix.
Except that if you've still got old crud-filled coolant in your system, the old will mix with the new and you'll be wasting both time and coolant. Besides, with water and coolant still in there to begin with, you won't be able to get all 4 gallons in and your balance won't be 50/50.
@@ibberman Yes, if he is confident he got it all out.Honestly, blowing air is a waste of time, he probably didn't even get more than a pint out .But hey I guess it's tap water, but that is nothing the concentrate can't take care of
2:15 I'm so glad that you said that you know it's sweet tasting from experience. I watched another flush video and about half the comments were from dolts asking how the guy knew that coolant was sweet tasting.
I'm also a big fan of adding rad flush a few days before. I've never done the flush this way I've always done the keep replacing with distilled water and pulled the thermo but I might give this a try on my new project. Nice video.
If you drain the radiator and leave drain open you can leave the garden hose in the radiator while the car is running and the water pump will push clean water through the system... cleans out all of the same components and saves time.
you can simply leave the cap off, turn the heater to hot and run it up to temp. once the thermostat opens, it'll burp out any remaining air. then add any needed coolant, cap it off, top off the reservoir and you're done. this only applies to open loop(non renix) systems and those that have the cap as the highest point.
I usually use a plastic funnel that is cut off to fit the radiator fill hole diameter and not bottom out on the core. I thereby make the filler the highest point with fluid in it and let it burp that way. There ARE some times on some engines I have to crack a provided bleeder valve, but overall it works nicely.
I ran into you and Colt at Rapid Citys 4x4 101. Talked to you for a minute about cherokee videos and you told me you have covered it. Let me tell you once i think ive seen it all there is more content for my ol xj. Thank you sir!
Find the capacity of the coolant system and make sure you use half of that much concentrated coolant. You don't need to make any 50/50 unless you bought a half a gallon more than you needed and you want to keep it for topping off but Ive never needed to top mine off in two years so you might just be storing the 50/50 for years.
Great video man. I'm newbie ZJ owner and I'm planning on doing a coolant flush when I replace my hoses and thermostat later today. You just made the process much easier for me. Thanks.
Good video! When you flush the radiator take the heater core hoses off and the pressure from the hose will push all the old coolant from the engine block out of the heater core hoses. Then just flush the heater core.
Great Video! I have used the chemical flushes before and killed my cooling system. I NEVER use them anymore! Got me an 83 CJ7 frankenjeep last summer and plan to make it my daily driver. It needs lots of loving to get there but it is worth it. Keep the great vids coming!!!
I go wheeling in the Mojave desert and Johnson Valley. Would have pulled the thermostat flushed without it and install a new thermostat. Can be a lot of work but with 120F out on the trail, I do everything I can to keep from having to walk out.
You can also point the vehicle up hill when filling and it'll push the air out. And start it and let it idle up to temp and refill. But having the cap on, it refill from the reservior like it's supposed to
i just did a head gasket and expansion plugs on a 4.0, i used my pressure washer to clean the block while i had the expansion plugs out, then lifted the heater core hoses and let vinegar sit in the elevated hoses for a about a day now, its completely clogged, i did the same to one of my jeeps a few years back that was just as clogged, it still works great, hope this one works out too. just wanted to leave a tip to help out for those who have the same problem.
when flushed and clean water still left in the engine simply use concentrate instead of 50/50 cuz air will not push all the water out think about it as soon as air will make room to pass over water it will do so and rest of the water will stay on the bottom of the block
Just go to an auto supply and pick up a Prestone engine flushing kit. Splice the appropriate tee into the heater outlet hose, put the discharge spigot in the radiator filler neck. Now connect your garden hose to the tee you put in the heater hose, turn the water on and start the engine. Let it run for about 10 minutes or so. Drain the water, disconnect your hose, and put the cap on the tee. Remove the discharge from the filler neck and refill the system with coolant.
might want to tell folks about your air hose disconnect, those are nice to have. I like to add the use of a air/water pressure flusher and a vacuum coolant filler to not have air pocket if you can justify there expense.
over here in aus there's a product called CLR not intended for this but it works well i just dumped out the rad and stuck 4L in toped it with water ran it around the block to get if pushed around and properly up to temp parked it for the night took it round the block again and dumped it out with it hot went inside and got bucket of hot water from the laundry filled it up and drained it out a few times fair bit of dicken around but the junk that it removed was insane
The cheap jeep videos are super helpful! I got a 94 black 5.2 zj as my second car so knowing how to do a budget lift and what problems I will run into is really great, by the end of the summer I will be doing a similar lift to the one you did (i.e the F2R spring swap, extended sway bar disconnects etc) and hopefully ill be able to fit 33's. Thanks for all the videos really helps out a kid like me learning how to work on my jeep XD
The only thing you got wrong is that the coolant usually goes from the engine, into the heater core and returns into the water pump (or sometimes into the outlet side of the radiator which then returns to the water pump via the lower radiator hose). If you flushed it from the engine side you didn't back flush it like you said you should (which is the correct way to do it)
Target sells distilled water in very nice containers that won't break like the ones from the grocery stores I would get seven or eight jugs instead of using hose water. This is exactly what I did I got it at Target about eight jugs and it's cheap
Nice and easy and just when I needed.. changing the thermostat in my 94 YJ...and figured I'd drain the system and back flush the heater core and rad...
50/50 mix $10/gal × 5 gal= $50. Concentrate $13/gal, distilled water $1/gal, so 3 gal concentrate + 3 gal water = $39+$3=$42. You have saved $8 and still have a gallon of 50/50 mix you have made remaining for future top offs.
this is how the cooling system is washed all over the world. I also did on my cars. Just don't blow out the rest of the water. And so the video is cool.
Yeah, there are about 20 steps here, but it is a one time process rather than repeating a process multiple times. Thanks. Only one question. Can you also flush the water pump through it's in and out hoses?
Prestone flush and fill kit. Much faster than running with water then draining it three times. Actually BACK FLUSHES your entire system and goes AROUND the thermostat. You did roughly the same thing.
Guys, to sum it up, what you are experiencing is "nasal hallucinations" also known as "phantosmia" or "phantom smells", meaning odors that aren't actually present even though you may have smelled them before; on the other side of that "odor coin", you have what's called "odor-evoked autobiographical memory" which describes memories triggered by odors you have experienced before. I just looked it up because I was intrigued by it and interested in knowing more about that phenomenon I had myself experienced before. That said, interesting video!
I have had to do this too many times. First a water pump bearing failed and put lots of shavings in the system of my 4.0L. Very hard to get all the shavings I have discovered as my next 3 water pumps keep getting shavings in the bearings and thus the cycle repeats. If there are shavings in the coolant trust me and spend a day completely flushing several times.
Great video. I found it an awesome supplemental/complimentary to ChrisFix's videos on the topic. Maybe not in isolation for the noobs; but it reinforced a few things I've come to understand. Now I just gotta forgo a bit of RUclips time and just get out do the job!! 😂
Very good, comprehensive process. But never go under a vehicle to do anything w/o safety glasses. A speck of sand/dirt in eye is major pain. Don't know what coolant in eye is like but don't want to know either.
Best example of a super flush for a Jeep I have seen to date! Will definitely be doing this in the near future. Thanks for all the tips & advice Matt! #chickenwaterantifreeze
Day late and a dollar short but if you know you're going to do this swing by a local gas station/garage/napa/whatever and see if the have a used DEF container. These hold just over 2 gallons and are clearly marked on the side. Mixing is a breeze and because it is marked if I have a partial jug I know exactly what the 50/50 mix is.
Or you can disconnect the upper radiator hose, and run the engine until the thermostat opens, while adding water in the process. That way you only remove one hose while flushing the entire system except the overflow which makes it two hoses. I believe it does a more thorough job with the water pumps help.
Have you ever used a chemical cooling system flush such as the Prestone variant? It seems to works pretty well in removing rust and/or other particulates from the system that have been clogging things up. (I would suggest dumping any chicken water or anything else that shouldn't be in there first!) When used on the GF's '99 XJ it loosened up enough stuff that the water ran brown for at least 5 mins in back flushing. (Got clearer towards the end of course.) The coolant in the system before flushing looked strange to me, but was green and tested out fine on the hydrometer to -20. I was amazed at how much shit came flowing out of the cooling system! This XJ was evidently not cared for well as it still had the Mopar factory ignition on it at 210,000 miles. Factory numbered wires and plugs burnt to .075 gap! Still passed emissions. Trans fluid on the AW4 was BLACK! So black that I set the trans filter down in the drain pan and looked at it later wondering if I forgot a bracket sticking up out of the oil! Runs and drives fine with 230,000 on it now!
Lonewlf7676 that's incredible. I have a 99 XJ Classic and hope it will last me another decade of service or more. I just do maintenance when it needs it and run quality oil and filter.
Not sure if this is going to be addressed at this point. But anytime your working on your cooking system make sure you rinse the entire engine bay down with water when done cause antifreeze will eat holes in your vehicle faster then driving it through a salt mine. It’s literally the worst possible thing to have sitting on metal components..

over here in aus there's a product called CLR not intended for this but it works well i just dumped out the rad and stuck 4L in toped it with water ran it around the block to get if pushed around and properly up to temp parked it for the night took it round the block again and dumped it out with it hot went inside and got bucket of hot water from the laundry filled it up and drained it out a few times
fair bit of dicken around but the junk that it removed was insane
The cheap jeep videos are super helpful! I got a 94 black 5.2 zj as my second car so knowing how to do a budget lift and what problems I will run into is really great, by the end of the summer I will be doing a similar lift to the one you did (i.e the F2R spring swap, extended sway bar disconnects etc) and hopefully ill be able to fit 33's. Thanks for all the videos really helps out a kid like me learning how to work on my jeep XD
Hey Matt, great channel, thanks a ton for all the useful info! Maybe a vacuum line video? Nobody thinks about that, eh?
The only thing you got wrong is that the coolant usually goes from the engine, into the heater core and returns into the water pump (or sometimes into the outlet side of the radiator which then returns to the water pump via the lower radiator hose). If you flushed it from the engine side you didn't back flush it like you said you should (which is the correct way to do it)
Awesome job - I feel ready to flush my own truck's cooling system without taking it to a shop! Cool!
Use HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) coolant.
Yeee, thank you I was wondering about what to do about all of the hose water left inside from flushing!
Target sells distilled water in very nice containers that won't break like the ones from the grocery stores I would get seven or eight jugs instead of using hose water. This is exactly what I did I got it at Target about eight jugs and it's cheap
The part where you picked up the penny reminded me of a mr bean episode😂😂😂💀💀💀
I just flushed my peugeot 206 coolant system using your video tnx man good tips 👌🏻
A well presented utube video explaining proper procedures for flushing the cooling system.
Nice and easy and just when I needed.. changing the thermostat in my 94 YJ...and figured I'd drain the system and back flush the heater core and rad...
Excellent!
My favourite channel.... Thanks.😊
“You’re paying for water and wasting your money” *buys water*
a gallon of distilled water is 75 cents. a gallon of water in premix antifreeze is about 5 dollars.
Painful but I didn't skip adds. Because I like you and this channel. Been away for a while but glad you have a zj project
this is how the cooling system is washed all over the world.
I was in my kitchen watching this video and I kept getting whiffs of coolant. What youtube magic are you working here?
+Drooskee Skee it's the new 4d RUclips
WOW....I did as well. No shitting whatsoever. WTF?
+Sam Sam metal shavings are no fun!
Matt's rad, always got the details on how to do stuff when working on Jeeps! I need to do this on my YJ soon...
Great video. I found it an awesome supplemental/complimentary to ChrisFix's videos on the topic. Maybe not in isolation for the noobs; but it reinforced a few things I've come to understand.
Now I just gotta forgo a bit of RUclips time and just get out do the job!! 😂
This guy is cool, I liked the transmission video he did. Wish he did more junkyard videos
Did I really see a ziptie holding your front stabilizer bar on?!! You my friend are awesome!!
I'd be really interested to also hear about how you're going to go about fixing that broken shift linkage you mentioned at the beginning.
Electric Blue mvf shifter
Novak cable shifter. Did it in my TJ.
Great vid!!! Learned a couple thing I never thought of before
This started out like the deliverance. One easy step is to go to the auto parts store and buy a flush kit!
Thanks a million brother. Very helpful tips.
A guy say no worry. Any water- well mud he flushee. Lol
Im glad to see im not the only one who uses zip ties to hold front suspension part together
Wonderful thank s for the tutorial straight to the point.
Well pilgrim ..that was flushed with success ..😁pip pips and carryon
Personally I LOVE the feel of coolant in my eyes. It's why I hang onto my Jeep.
Never tried chicken coolant tho.
Good video! Thanks for sharing
