- I love me a good floating island. Give me a fantasy setting and put some floating islands and you've got me hook, line, and sinker. So I done made myself one with a little waterfall trickery.

You can find the materials to make these online at various shops (I use greenstuffworld.com for a lot of my sculpting materials, hobbies.co.uk for various tools and materials, and odds and ends from ebay, amazon, or the local shops). While there are lots of random little pieces, the main "ingredients" are:
High density foam
Perspex
2 Part Epoxy Resin
Mod Podge (gloss for waves/water and matte for sticking scenery)
MDF (for the base)
Foam flock/shrubbery/etc
Natural materials (rocks, dirt, sand, etc) from wherever you can find them!
i was not ready for the lack of 'tiny nerdy things'
Me neither
No one was 😂
Yeah, as soon as I heard I like to make things things it tweaked out

Pro tip from my sculpture professor! When we used this same foam for making burn out aluminum molds, we were told to glue the foam together with rubber cement. Coat both sides with the rubber cement and let it dry completely BEFORE putting them together. It creates a chemical bond as soon as they touch and make for perfectly seamless foam blocks for carving! ^_^
Thank you so much for the helpful tip, not only for the creator of this channel, but for those of us watching as well. 😊👍
Are you a scientist or something?
@@qallmepurple You mean the sculpture professor who taught us that? He is a sculpture professor at a university, so I like to believe they know what they’re talking about. (≧∇≦)
@@qallmepurple idk if you read the comment or not

Ooh so this was your first voiced video, I positively love you self deprecatory commentary and snark. It's a delight to watch. I must say that was a real clever trick with the waterfall, it provides structural support in a way that actually works for the scene.
ok so, has no one realized how this man's name is Adam, sounds exactly like SomethingElseYT and is afraid of sea creatures?

Have u ever considered remaking one if ur older pieces? Really enjoy seeing how far uve come and I think itd be really interesting to see how u would improve upon this 😊
Man im addicted to this channel. Ive been binge watching and its helping with my anxiety. I really should actually build some, all my supplies are sitting out but I've just been so tired.
2 minute rule. Just sit down and work on something for 2 minutes. Then you can either stop or keep going. Motivation always comes after you start.
I love how you went from wholesome normal nerdy stuff, to cursed and weird nerdy stuff.
Magnificent! The paint/glue spreading with a straw technique was so cool :D
Glad you liked it!
@@NorthoftheBorder Please keep them coming!! I left your username in my search history so I can check in for any new videos :)
@@dredonaut5529 Will do! I'm aiming to have one out each week. You can toggle notifications if you want to be alerted when a new one comes out.
@@NorthoftheBorder Oh, I forgot this feature existed, thank you once again!
It is good
I'm rewatching all of his videos, and it's so interesting to see
I only just found your videos but absolutely love them. I used to play Warhammer and Warhammer 40k so I know how tricky it is to make something look as good as you do. Love this island. You should collect some of the LoTR scenes together to make a screen saver.
I really love how you made the waterfall what supported the island. It really sells the illusion that the island is floating. Honestly, the detail work on all your models is so impressive too! Really cool piece!
Absolutely love your presentation style! You're honest, funny, you give recommendations, share actual dimensions, state tools and supplies used, plus safety which not every channel provides!;You're entertaining and talented in both crafting your pieces but also the editing. I'm fairly new to your channel and becoming more of a fan with each video I see. Well done!
The best part about this is the sound from cutting the foam
I love how u explain things. So glad u started commentating ur videos.
this is insane. Its crazy to think there are insanely talented people like you in this world. How can you make something so realistic but its made of foam, glue, paint etc. keep doing what your doing, you have an amazing talent.
Awesome beautiful diorama. The floating island looks fantastic. The waterfall seem a little oversized compared to the little pond on top of the island... There would be more water falling down than the pond could hold.. The idea to use the waterfall as a stand for the floating island is genius.
He made a cool floating island. Once you suspend all logic to there being a floating island, I don’t think it really matters how much of a ratio the supplying lake/pond vs waterfall size is. In the fun world of fantasy, anything goes. Doesn’t it?
Only things, not nerdy things, man you were a different man then
I really like the blue in the top. It makes everything look bigger because it makes it look like a big pond or a small lake
You've come so far in the last 2 years! I love your videos, and you're hilarious
really great tutorial! Your island turned out amazing!
Thanks! I was really excited once I got it mounted onto the baseplate--it's so nice to see it starting to come together.
There is something about the process of making these that totally resonates with me. I really like it! ^_^
I've been looking for a new way of expressing my art. I appreciate your talent and your show
Sure! I'll go ahead and make this for my desk, lol. I don't have the time nor the skill!.. Amazing work!
Now that I've watched the whole video...fantastic results! Great job!
one word: PERFECTION
This is the COOLEST!!!!!! I love it and as a woman I usually go more for interiors when it comes to minis. But I adore this.
What does being a woman have to do with the minis you like?
@@MeemahSN I always notice women make cute dollhouse interiors and men make dioramas, warhammer 40k figures or terrain, etc.
wow this is a great tutorial! looks so real and plus you are shooting with a macro which makes it look very cinematic! well done!
This island reminds me of the hidden island of the lovely game sky. Absolutely gorgeous
Watching some of the older stuff for the first time and I have to say he’s improved. Not that this isn’t good. Just nice to see artists improving.
Oh I really like the shade of blue in the pond. Blessing in disguise
This is so cool! I need this for my desk! So.... looks like I'm making it! ;) Great work dude!
How did it work out?
I'm slowly going through each of your videos and watching them

Been binge watching all your videos.
Having picked up your channel in the recent months, watching this video I was caught off guard by the lack of “tiny nerdy things” in the intro… I love that addition.
God damn I wish I was able to do awesome stuff like this. That looks absolutely fantastic. I can see it being used for a cool piece of D&D or Warhammer terrain. Or even as just a dope display piece. Amazing work my dude.
"My name is Adam and I like to make things."
Oh, how things have changed.
Strong Roger Dean vibes on this one. Great work!
I use clear silicone for my water it’s brilliant, I love this I’m definitely going to make one of these ❤️❤️❤️
Look how pure and wholesome he is
When i first saw the thumbnail i was like how is it floating the only thing tuching the ground is the waterfall then for like half of the video i still hadn't realized that it was the waterfall
I think it was a mix of me being dumb and your amazing way of holding it up
Wow before the tiny nerdy things
Awesome project! Please show off more at the end. I really wanted to see it better.
God damn beautiful. Please keep making awesome tiny nerdy things
Here’s a cool idea: you could make a mini theme park
His first "forgot to hit the record button" moment..!
Wonderful little island! Would have been cool with a small cabin and a wizard on top.
I love a good floating island, so maybe the next one will feature a wee cabin
if this had a little light underneath it, Id def own this for my desk as a fixture. well done!
I like to imagine the reason why the lake's water is so blue is because it isn’t actually normal water, it's an ancient lake of magical healing water that can heal any sickness/wound or disease.
Basically in my headcanon, this floating island contains the tree of life, and a magical healing lake.
But it’s surrounded by a large dangerous ocean with jagged rocks, but those who are able to reach it would be blessed by the tree of life's power.
Enjoying your videos at the moment. You should totally do Lake Hylia from Zelda Ocarina of Time. That would be awesome.
This is very cool !
New fan here, just wanted to see your more early works
Just awesome 👌😱😱
Thanks!
I love the look of this!
Great work! Stunning for sure! Watching you work I thought of the Starship Enterprise beaming Spock up or the tractor beam locking on another craft (using your waterfall technique into those beam illusions)
😊 Feel free to use that idea
See you inspired me! Thanks for the video! ❤️
Each week is a little ambitious for such amazing creations, don’t you think? If I wanted to make something this cool, it’d probably take me months, if not years.
Great content, i learnt a lot of different techniques in this video. Thanks
Nice saw! 👍
He’s just making things no tiny nerds here
I really want to try out making my own sculptures but I can't figure out what kind of foam I should get? I think you're using XPS Foam but all I can find are these thin (2-5cm) sheets of XPS foam used for insulation, and they're white/black and not baby blue like yours. Would those work, you think? Thanks!
Any foam works, really! XPS foam is nice because it's a bit more dense and it's easier to cut and shape, and is less likely to deform from glues and heat, but even simple packing foam can be used for lots of stuff--the colour is completely irrelevant. I use blue/black/pink/yellow/white foam, depending on what's available
@@NorthoftheBorder Wow thanks for your quick response! That's all I wanted to know, thank you very much- love your videos! 😃
You make this stuff look so easy I wish I was half as good as u
Absolutely stunning
Great job
I like how on the torn out of the ground the color isn’t just gray.
This looks awesome, although I do wish there was a little bit of blue in the waterfall. But it still looks awesome. Great video 👍
Wow, great job! Looks just like the floating shards in Eador Masters of the Broken World :)
Omg Adam didn’t say “hey I’m Adam and I like to make Tiny Nerdy Things”

You should totally make all the world of warcraft places!!!!!!!!
Oh boy I love dioramas
Mixing paints directly on the craft pad has me dying on the inside lol
As me watching this one year later, the commentary is missing without the "tiny nerdy things" part.
I feel like North of the Border is the Lawful Good version of crafting to Studson Studios Chaotic Good alignment.. I love both all the same though haha. Great video!
This is so cool I wanna make it for my dad

these are your videos which make me want to see you do something like warhammer
You should do a material check list at the start of the videos, these are great!
Love it! I want to try and make my own sometime.
Wow the style of your commentary really changed over the years
No tiny nerdy threw me for a loop there
GAH! That looks so cool!
please tell me i'm not the only one that thinks one (or more) of these would make awesome D&D battle maps
I wish I would’ve found this 26 hours ago.. beautiful. However my project is not. 😅once I get over this frustration I will definitely watch this and try again 😂
The first thin coat of plaster is called splash coat. 🤗 btw ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR WORK!
So what you're saying is it wasn't a mistake, but a happy accident!

The top of the waterfall could have done with a bit of blue expoxy resin, running to white at the bottom to represent foam. Fantastic build though
Don't forget to mention, when blowing through the straw, take care as blowing too hard for too long will make you light headed!
