Just treated myself to one of these units. My first impression is that it's fantastic, but the manual is overwhelming. You've just made life a lot simpler for me. Thanks!
Really good explanation. I have just a couple of minor quibbles. 1) When you create a NEW project and select CONTINUE then you get the track settings, etc, for the previous project copied into your new project. If you select RESET then all the track settings are set to system defaults. Hey Steve! Just a shout out and a really big thank you for one of the most informative demos I've ever seen on RUclips or elsewhere. I'm an older guy kind of a dinosaur and I come from the analog age so I picked up this Zoom R16 as sort of an entry-level into the digital portastudio domain and I'm loving it! And your demo was just what I needed for real. The way you went through it was just so intuitive and so patient so yeah man I really appreciate you putting this up for guys like me! So I'm wondering if there's a way that I can contact you other than this particular thread if I have questions. I don't know how you feel about sending your email to me? Anyway, thanks again and while it's fresh in my head I'm going to go lay some tracks and have some fun! Oh and by the way, I was really impressed by the overall sounds that this unit puts out when you were all said and done with the master and function. It sounded far better than I had hoped so yeah thanks again man and I hope to be in touch with you soon! Great job!
@@stevekonbass very cool steve! Thanks for the link and I'm sure that I'll be in touch, like I said I'm kind of a dinosaur from the analog days! I still love analog though I do have to say. The trio that I play in, we do sort of a jam band, Fusion / blue / Funk sort of thing and we just started recording on 16 track 2 in tape and it just sounded killer! The drums in particular just pop! Do you think that you can get does kind of sounds out of this Zoom R16 unit? I mean I realize there's the cost difference in a quality difference and all that but being digital do you think it can replicate the analog vibe?
I used to record on reel to reel too. Not sure if you can ever duplicate it. The good thing about the Zoom R16 is you have those 8 inputs to record drums and there's an insert effect section called 8X Comp that has some different settings that might be good to record drums.
@stevekonbass amazing tutorial! big help for newbies like me. I hope you can also do something similar for the Zoom Livetrak L-12 in the future. Hope Zoom reads this so they can provide you with the L-12 to play around with! Keep it up bro!
very good for a beginner like me I was able to lay down a couple of tracks before the end of your video...well I had to stop and start it make notes but was very helpful thanks !!!
@@stevekonbass ...thanks for your reply...my next challenge is going to be to hook-up my new r16 to my laptop and run it with the cuebase software that comes with it and my real question is am I able to combine my Logitech video webcam with the r16 my laptop/cuebase &video cam to make youtube style videos...thanks again !!!
Ya got me there David. I'm not up on webcams. The videos I do, like this one: ruclips.net/video/4RACoyPbI6M/видео.html are done with a Canon video camera.
stevekonbass Awesome, I went and got one, it's pretty easy to use so far. I'm trying to figure out the algorithms so that I can gate live drums, I don't think there's an easy way around that, so I've just been using it as an interface at the moment. I'll probably use it as a standalone for recording gigs or rehearsals and see if I can mixdown with the built in effects. It seem pretty promising so far.
Thank you my brother Steve.. I just got one (used) from Guitar Center for $199.. in pristine unused condition. Only flaw (door for sd card is missing) .. No big deal at all! Still has the Film on the display! I have Cubase Elements 10 which will work with it out of the box.. Your explanation of the functions is perfect! Thanks again!
Easy to understand for a technical moron like myself. Does this unit come with Cubebase software? Do you upload your individual tracks on the SD card to your pc and then mix and master on cubebase? Thanks!
Thank you so so much for this amazing video you did here I am also a bass player for a country band I was a heavy metal bass player thank you my brother

Very I'm glad I found this tutorial. Just ordered the Zoom R16, mainly because this video shows the workflow in a clear fashion. :) Thanks man! I'm going to use it to (live) mix and record sequenced synths in separate tracks. Should be very usable.
Brilliant! Clearly explained, logical and you show each step so that everybody else can see it! I'm sure some careful thought and planning went into it this before you hit the record button on the camera. And it was great to hear the final mix at the end. Great video!
Hi Steve! You know, I find myself coming back to your tutorial videos just to refresh my memory on the zoom r-16. I just wanted to say hi and thank you again for your deep knowledge of the zoom R-16 and for patiently sharing with us! Jim from seattle!
Thanks for putting this together and posting it. You demonstrated exactly what I wanted to know with relevant explanations and good, clear video. Well done! Guided my pre-purchase decision, and then helped me get started quickly once I had the unit.

Great job!
Thanks man. Appreciate it. Have a great time recording with it. You can contact me through my website: www.stevekonbass.com
Really useful video. Thank you. This means I'll be able to now use my R16 for recording my new songs.
Hope ya write some good ones.
Thanks for this video! It was very pedagogic showing and easy to understanding! Thanks once again! Now I`m gonna work! ;)
Glad it was a help. Happy recording!
Just picked one up on FB Marketplace for $125. This video was very thorough and helpful for me to get started on this! Thanks so much
You're welcome Grant. It's a great recorder. Hope you record some killer songs with it.
@stevekonbass amazing tutorial! big help for newbies like me. I hope you can also do something similar for the Zoom Livetrak L-12 in the future. Hope Zoom reads this so they can provide you with the L-12 to play around with! Keep it up bro!
Much thanks Mark! Glad the video was a help!!
thanks a lot, save me at least a day reading the manual , great.
Glad it was a help Els.
Awesome dude, I'm definitely gonna purchase one, thanks!!!!!
Hope ya like it.
Very comprehensive run through. Thanks for touching on all the channel, insert, and mastering effects. Rock on!
Thank you kindly!
great lessons ! thanks.
THANKS! So few reviewers provide this info, which is the info I really need to decide if this unit is for me!
Glad the video was a help David.
Baller tutorial man! Thanks!!
very good for a beginner like me I was able to lay down a couple of tracks before the end of your video...well I had to stop and start it make notes but was very helpful thanks !!!
Awesome! Have fun with it and have fun writing!
The videos I do, like this one: ruclips.net/video/4RACoyPbI6M/видео.html are done with a Canon video camera.
excellent tutorial man!!
Thanks!
Thanks Steve .. This is so much quicker and easier than working your way through the manual provided.
You're welcome Terry. Have fun recording with it. I have 5 different Zoom tutorials up if you should need any questions answered.
Great video tutorial! How is the machine holding up so far?
It's holding up great. I use it a lot.
stevekonbass Awesome, I went and got one, it's pretty easy to use so far.
Glad the video was a help. Happy recording!
Easy to understand for a technical moron like myself. Does this unit come with Cubebase software? Do you upload your individual tracks on the SD card to your pc and then mix and master on cubebase? Thanks!
Yes it came with a free Cubebase download. You can mix on the Zoom itself or do it on Cubebase
Thank you so so much for this amazing video you did here I am also a bass player for a country band I was a heavy metal bass player thank you my brother
Glad you liked the video Gary. Hope you record some cool tunes.
Nice Work!
I bought one of these today... and this is like having a mate show you how it works.
I'll be watching this a few times just to remember it all.
This is a great, easy to use multitrack. Hope ya record some hits with it. When ya get knee deep in it, here are some more videos on it that might help ya:

I brought the R16 about 3 years ago from a second hand music store and use it as a Synthesizers recorder from and analog mixing board. Download the wave files into a DAW, Mix, Edit and Master.
Hey Steve, it goes without saying that you're a badass musician and singer, but you're a hell of a teacher as well!! I really like your material and you got a new fan! Jim from Seattle
Much thanks Jim! Happy to know that I've helped people learn the machine and glad to know some people appreciate my tunes. Hope you record some great songs and get enjoyment from the Zoom.

Great presentation. Who needs to read the manual now!
Thanks Clive!
Thank you for this great video. I didn’t think I could do recording and now I am going for it.

Steve , your excellent tutorial gives me the confidence to pick up an R16 for myself . You should be on the ZOOM payroll . Many thanks .
Thanks Andrew.
Brother best video on this recorder i use it for voice over and making audio tracks you sold me i am ordering one tonight again awesome dude thanks
Glad it was a help brother.
Very I'm glad I found this tutorial. Just ordered the Zoom R16, mainly because this video shows the workflow in a clear fashion. :) Thanks man! I'm going to use it to (live) mix and record sequenced synths in separate tracks. Should be very usable.
Glad the video was a help. The R16 has been useful to me and it's easy to use. Happy recording!
Very helpful and far better than most overly complicated reviews! 👍🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks saved me a lot of time deciding weather to purchase one of these. Appreciated. Off to Amazon now. Cheers.

Excellent. Thanks for explaining this unit. Brilliant and clear tutorial.
Thank You!
Great video, I have had mine for several years and am just now sitting down to record. Thanks!!!
You're welcome! Hope you record some great material!
Brilliant! Clearly explained, logical and you show each step so that everybody else can see it! I'm sure some careful thought and planning went into it this before you hit the record button on the camera. And it was great to hear the final mix at the end. Great video!
Much thanks!
thanks Steve .. just picked up a zoom r-16 for 150 bux this video was perfect .. as there was no manual with the unit

Hi Steve! You know, I find myself coming back to your tutorial videos just to refresh my memory on the zoom r-16. I just wanted to say hi and thank you again for your deep knowledge of the zoom R-16 and for patiently sharing with us! Jim from seattle!
Great to hear! Rock on!
@@stevekonbass hell yeah!!
Thanks for putting this together and posting it. You demonstrated exactly what I wanted to know with relevant explanations and good, clear video. Well done! Guided my pre-purchase decision, and then helped me get started quickly once I had the unit.
Awesome! Thanks and happy recording!! I was using it last night with one of my bands and the ability to record 8 tracks at once is a great feature. Unit records great.
God bless you for making it simple for me to understand
Happy to help!
Awaiting delivery of my R16 tomorrow. Very excited to get rolling and I greatly appreciate the tutorials! Subscribed to your channel and will be tuning in for sure.
Thanks Peter! Hope you enjoy the R16 and write some great tunes!
I've Seen all 5vidéos. Thanks for taking time to explain clearly how R16 works. To be honest, it was clearer with your english vidéeo than with my french manual (and i'm french). I've learned a lot and now I will try to record some stuffs (after buying an SD card for my R16:^). Thanks a lot Steve, and take care.
Thanks David. Hope you enjoy the R16 and record some great tunes!
Thank you for a clear concise lesson.
Glad it was helpful!
Super job Steve. Zoom needs to pay you big $. Your step-by-step method is the best I have seen so far. And now you are digging deep into the process. Session 5 was especially well done. Todah!!!
Thanks Jay! I appreciate it. I did contact Zoom to see if they'd work with me, but never heard from them. LOL! I'm glad my videos were a help to you. On another note, I started another channel with nothing but jam tracks for players to solo over or jam along with. If you might be interested, here's the link: ruclips.net/channel/UCMd80zVd8Vi7AbJntnVOMfwvideos
@@stevekonbass Steve, I checked out your jam tracks channel. Fantastic! Great, simple, resources. All of the musicians and producers at our studio agree. Your head, talents, and concepts seem to be right where 'real music makers' can relate to. Keep up the good work. You are appreciated. Shalom
Thanks again Jay. Your feedback is appreciated. Keep rockin' and creating music brother.
Love it... You are totally awesome! Crystal clear step by step info! Thanks!
Glad it was a help Nathan.
Thank you so much for all your help. It can be very daunting to start out with something like this. You made it easy and understandable.
You are so welcome!
Thanks very much from Locked Down London!
You're welcome very much Gavin from Locked Down In Florida!
Thank you very much for this tutorial. I just acquired this unit.
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy recording with it.
I’m definitely sticking with you now Steve. You explain everything so well. I’ve learnt so much from you ( I’m a 60 year old bass guitar beginner ) I need to save up and get one of these 😊
Ah, you're never too old to learn Maria-Anne and it's great that you're diving into new things. The Zoom recorder is great. I've spent an endless amount of hours in front of it.
Good tutorial. Looking to get one. You’ve helped my decision. Thanks man
Thanks Paul. I spent the last couple of days using it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Happy recording brother.
