I love it! My dear friend Anthony recorded my first LP with it and my drummer just bought a new one, so we're gonna started on the second one pretty soon!!
I just got my first R16, checking all the coaching videos. This one is pretty good. Good luck with the project you started 5 months ago ! Wild Bill Oct 29, 2020
What a fantastically smart, quick, and informative demo tutorial. So incredibly well done. Love it. Thanks. Will buy one of these from Guitar Center tonight. Just $299.
I've been so on the fence about finally upgrading my music studio but needed something easy to bring around and less complicated to use. Thank for making this comprehensive review. By the way, your band sounds great! 🐯
I liked this review! It's very informative, although I already own a Zoom R16, and I use it for all my projects which may require external recording (guitar, vocals, hardware synths). It's an amazing studio-in-a-box!
one of the most entertaining and informative product videos I have seen on youtube. cant wait to get mine. Looks very easy to use , especially if you are used to stand alones, and the pres dont sound bad at all.
I just sold my Zoom MRS 1608CD as I now use PC. I think it's excellent bit of kit, got me straight into digital from analogue Multi-Track recording on my Tascam 4 Track. The 1608 (now discontinued, so ebay I guess) had a built in Drum and Bass machine, eight combi Hi-Z/XLR inputs (4 with 48v phantom power), MIDI 5 pin DIN sockets and twin RCA/Phono inputs and multiple guitar/vocal effects as well as a good number of on the fly effects including time synced (to the BPM you have set, you can choose which measure to sync to) Delay . The drum machine was good too with lots of kits and step input, as well as using the built in pads or a MIDI device. I would recommend Zoom to anyone looking into starting (as well as experienced) recording music as the price is hard to beat for the quality and functions. It's also more convenient than hauling a PC, monitor, sound interface and such, to a gig (unless you have a decent lap top that is) and it's ready to go out of the box. I've not used the R16, so I can't comment on that but from my experience with the 1608 I should think it's good for what it is. Cheers!
Good video. This is one of the few I've seen which actually show a band recording live. Secondly, the Zoom R16 looks like it has the most desirable quality for this kind of recording--- it's simple to use. Making quality demos is what amateur musicians need. A lot of the new recorders are way too complicated. You only need a few tracks to make great music. Don't forget the Beatles only had 4 tracks when they recorded Sgt. Pepper! The music should come first---- not incredibly complicated Space Shuttle control functions!!
I like mixing my music in true stereo, like old school Beatles recording, I only put my basic drum track and acoustic guitar as a base to go by, then pan most everything else to the left or right at around 75%, it sounds bigger when you can hear certain instruments completely seperate.
Thank you so much for this. I just ought the Zoom and don't know much about recording. I couldn't make much sense of the manual, and couldn't even set an effect. But this explains it so clearly. You ought to be employed by Zoom to write their manual!
I owned one of these. The sound was amazing! I now have the tascam dp24. I have to say, in just my own opinion, I like the tascam better, but I think this zoom may give it a run for it's money sound wise.

It takes a tremendous amount of time to master using this type of Zoom recorder. It freaks people out when you are working with this device because you are punching turning and clicking buttons all over the place. Why, because there are literally thousands of options to choose from.
I use it to just track down ideas quickly and do overdubs. Ignoring all the horrible onboard effects etc. Then later I use the computer to edit it all. It's pretty easy to use for just that
I love mine, but I find that inputs get stuck in the sockets and I have to wrestle with the machine to pull them out. Then only solution would be (once I've got my 'permanent' studio set up) to run permanent patch cables to an external patch bay.
The band - I'm detecting a lot of interesting stuff ... much of which is either British prog-rock or some of the indie bands of the 1980s UK ... and a bunch of Canuckian guys out of Tronno.
I've been looking at multi-track recorders recently and the pickings are pretty slim. I was planning on getting one of the Zoom units, however the more I research them the more user complaints I find. I've heard complaints about build quality (as the comment below) but also that the internal clock drifts on them due to one of the components used (which is an issue if you want to add rhythm tracks post recording or want to use it for video production). The reviews seem a little more positive for the Tascam recorders. My problem is that the DP-008 and DP-03 both have lower quality recordings and less features than the Zoom units. Next in their line is the 24 track which is out of my budget likely because they have a CD writer in it. It would be nice if Tascam came out with a 16 or 24 track recorder with good quality recording and ditch the CD writer to save on manufacturing cost (or have a CD writer add on that is compatible with future units for those who require it, which I suspect is a minority nowadays). I guess that leaves the Boss BR-800 to research (as I can't remember the specs off the top of my head). Edit: After doing more research it appears that pretty much all of the lower priced units have their drawbacks and/or reliability issues. I'm leaning towards the Zoom R8 due to the price, features and recording quality. I'll just have to hope I don't get a lemon I guess.
Be careful with TASCAM stand alone recorders. I had used them for years and the last one DP-24 had problems 6 months after purchase. After taking it in for repair I was informed it would cost me $180 upfront to look at it as the warranty only covers parts after 90 days, no labor. Won't be purchasing TASCAM again. The ZOOM warranty is a full year on parts and labor
Deb Erney Thanks for the advice. I've decided to go the laptop and interface route. My friend has given me his mothers old laptop and I plan to purchase an interface in the near future.
The Zoom units have 1 year FULL warranty. I haven't had any problems with my unit and I have used it ALOT. But your right about everyone having a different experience. I think you are right on the clock issue. I own a zoom r24 and recorded an hour rehearsal, when I synced to video the adio drifts. Is not the end of the world, ibwonder if the tascam DP-24 or DP-32 have the same clock issue.

Unfortunately it doesn't come with autotune or fortunately! Sounds great. I've been using mine as an interface. But I have used it as a standalone. It would be better if it had a gate in the 8xcomp algorithm, and all the guitar distortions aren't really working for me yet. Im interested in seeing if I can get a nice rehearsal recording like you did. Cheers!
Hi I watched your video and I find it very interesting. I have a problem, I bought the r16 together with 4 mic beringher: sl75c, ba19a, b5 panoramic .. only that both the speaker and the panoramas want the panthom present only on channel 5 and 6. How can I solve the problem and connect my second panoramic? thanks in advance for your attention
Can you use this as a mixer for live performance? Can you put eq and reverb thru the inputs? I want to be able to play a recorded drum and bass part while playing live guitar and singing thru it....but I would want effects on the vocals while singing live.....
Hey you go deep into it, thanks. Only to get it clear: There are effects you can't erase, so you record them to the tracks (e.g. guitar effects) and there are those you can those that you change later reverb and delay. What is it with EQ? My Idea is it to play with a small band, use this as Mixer with individual EQs, and reverb and be able to at least change the reverb settings while working on the recordings where I need less reverb. Is that possible?
Great video dude! What would you recommend for me. Were tryin to get a portable playback unit to have available some of the production tracks used on the album along with a track for a click. Trying to find something with 8 or 16 tracks and individual outs to send to a house mixer. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Cool video bro I just got one of these. I don't want to assume ,but is RUSH one of your influences? My favorite all time band. If im wrong I apologize. Anyway..awesome video bro it really helps!
Hi, very nice video and tune... I have a question that hopefully you could help me out. It's possible to import your own wav files and assign them to different tracks to play them back live?
ZOOM R16 or BOSS BR-800?? i record at home vocals and acoustic guit, but then also in a band (vocal, 2 x guitars, bass and drums) we do alternative rock/heavier kind of stuff
PROBLEM SOLVED !!! Be sure to uninstall & delete Zoom entries in Audio Midi Setup app. Also be sure to install clean: No devices in USB slots and quit all programs. When are they going to update the Zoom R24 driver for Mac OS, so I can use my R24 as a controller in Logic Pro? Because Logic Pro doesn’t recognize the device. It’s an important issue for me and many users because 1/3rd of the device is rendered unworkable. Did I buy a cat in a bag?
Do the make anything like this now (2020). I hate looking at a computer to record. I learned on analog tape and want to pretend that is what I'm doing. It is my production style, although prefer to record bands live to two track. Depending on my mood ill multi-Mic and channel or go for two Mics for the live band and singer on a third track dry but compressed in the same room or open door vocal booth.(best replace vocal booth with drum booth and have the drums in the big room with the band). Open live monitors optional. Some bands are so live oriented the will groove better with a tiny bit of open vocal monitoring. Please try it. I know we all had to do it at gigs so I know with modern technology and simple gobos+physics, it will sound good, clean and most importantly Groovy. Sorry, 4 the rant.luv ya
The newest release like this is the Tascam Model 24 I believe. I've owned several different multitrack recorders and I feel like Tascam is ahead of the rest, but this Zoom R16 is a great option as well.
Hiya is there a way that you can cut/delete beginning of tracks. I have some chatter , Etc at the beginning of a session that I would like to cut out . Is it possible on the zoom R 16 . I had an old Tascam DP 01 had a “cut” facility. many thanks
Can this device ignore specific voice tracks on ordinary cds? This so you can sing a solo (similar to a karaoke like situation) with instrumentals only being heard from this device, and no voices being heard from the original cd? Or are modern cds rigged so voice tracks cannot be removed, i.e. ignored by a device like this?
Great video .how do you get the mastering done and make the vocals smooth. I am using a condenser mic for my acoustic in input 1 and another condenser mic in input 2 for my daughters vocal at the same time and the sound is weak during playback . I have an R8 and the instructions are complicated. Not sure how to master , add softness, effect , etc and mix down to get the great sound like I am hearing from everyone on RUclips. Looking to do a few tracks per recordings. Would like to make sound better on R8 and transfer to laptop to put on kids audio devices for the .Thanks for any help and I really appreciate. Great job
Joe, are u using a compressor on vocals after u record them? That will help smooth and soften sound and keep vocals level volume and sitting in the mix.
Is it possible to insert a layer that will only be used in part of the song, say at 1:13 you want to put in a violin for :15 seconds. Is this capable of doing stuff like that?
Imagine I want to record my 8 track tape machine - can I plug the 8 outputs of my tape machine into the 8 inputs and record 8 seperate audio files to the sd card? thx
As others have said, yes you can. Furthermore, if you then plug the recorder into your computer via the supplied USB lead, you can drag and drop the separate track files from the device's storage onto the computer's disk. And you can do the reverse: drop an audio file onto the device's storage and then use it as if it had been directly recorded on the R16.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Just got a R16 and was wondering about the Insert Effects function. I realized you can only insert one effect at a time (unless using 8xcomp). I was trying to insert distortion on two guitar inputs at once. Can anyone advise as to how to get distortion effects onto two guitar tracks. Still new to this and and managing - for now- to do it through Cubase using the R16 as an interface only.
can i do the same thing with a 4 Track or 8 Track Tascam, like if i open the Tascam and put a cd burner to it since Tascam has a record button hopefully it can record on a cd when you hit the record button ???
Can you connect the R8 instead of another slave R16? The R8 has only the small usb port, unlike the larger standard computer usb port, so does that limit adding on? Does it have the same guitar effects as the R8?
Will studio one 3 recognise the audio interface ? Does anyone have any experience of using this mixer alongside studio one 3 ? You help will be apreciated.
Have a Question…. If i want to change a song from song A to song B, at a show, as i use sequence parts, what do i do, …. and is there a pedal switch i could use for that as well. ?
I'm sure if I paid a tad more attention you did answer my question, but can you use this to record multiple instruments on their own, then layer the prerecorded sounds over the top of each other. Like tubular bells kinda thing? Or does all the input sound get recorded at the same time, so wouldn't work without a band?
Every time Ivtry to connect 2 tracks for stereo I only get recording on whatever side I’m plugged into.If anyone could help me with this I will be forever grateful TIA
just bought a pair. looking forward to using them . they seem so straight forward, which is what I need.

Can you use this as a mixer for live performance? Can you put eq and reverb thru the inputs? I want to be able to play a recorded drum and bass part while playing live guitar and singing thru it....but I would want effects on the vocals while singing live.....

seriously mind_blown, I've been searching for some good solution for home drum recording, and this one seems most versatile and suitable :Đ

Yes it does remember

i really just need a usb audio interface...i like the idea of having physical track sliders tho...
I'm looking at getting this mixer for recording my drums only. Does it also provide compression?
Yes
nice review man. I have a question, if we connect another R16, we can get 16 input of audio interface to our computer and record 16 individual tracks?
I was wondering if the R16 can cancel the vocal and record the backing tract. tnx Ed

That will help smooth and soften sound and keep vocals level volume and sitting in the mix.
this guy is fab
Is it possible to insert a layer that will only be used in part of the song, say at 1:13 you want to put in a violin for :15 seconds. Is this capable of doing stuff like that?
can you save real time audio in the computer ?
Imagine I want to record my 8 track tape machine - can I plug the 8 outputs of my tape machine into the 8 inputs and record 8 seperate audio files to the sd card? thx
monkem yes 👍🏼
Absolutely
As others have said, yes you can. Furthermore, if you then plug the recorder into your computer via the supplied USB lead, you can drag and drop the separate track files from the device's storage onto the computer's disk. And you can do the reverse: drop an audio file onto the device's storage and then use it as if it had been directly recorded on the R16.
Yes you can. 8 tracks simultaneously.
Can I use effects while using this as a mixer during live performance
Yes
How come when I press project it just says “ Save to no .000 ?? No option of NEW project?
Will studio one 3 recognise the audio interface ?
Does anyone have any experience of using this mixer alongside studio one 3 ?
You help will be apreciated.
thanks! could you plug in a synthesiser too?
Have you got any recordings posted on RUclips
Have a Question…. If i want to change a song from song A to song B, at a show, as i use sequence parts, what do i do, ….
and is there a pedal switch i could use for that as well. ?
I wisb Zoom would put MIDI back on to a new machine. That would make them tons cos it is still very popular.
I'm sure if I paid a tad more attention you did answer my question, but can you use this to record multiple instruments on their own, then layer the prerecorded sounds over the top of each other. Like tubular bells kinda thing? Or does all the input sound get recorded at the same time, so wouldn't work without a band?
hey. How do i record 3 lavalier mics with this? I bought the xlr adapters but it only has phantom power on 2 tracks.
Anyone still rocking one of these in 2020? still worth getting?
You can't Record on the Thumb Drive it's for input into it
Every time Ivtry to connect 2 tracks for stereo I only get recording on whatever side I’m plugged into.If anyone could help me with this I will be forever grateful TIA
