Cutting the printrun is good, but the pricepoint needs to change also. A normal booster box should be around 100-110 USD, and not 125-135 USD. The value isn't there, and the way they reprint every valuable card into the ground is just unsustainable.
The value may not be there, but people are buying at the current price point. Why would a company lower prices if the consumer base are still buying?
I’m not saying that to be overly cynical of a business. I’m saying that from a management position. The price may be high but the demand is still there.
We know what's going to happen. Prices won't drop or won't drop much. Instead, 3x foil treatments, full art lands, serialized, alt art, border treatments, unfoiled, upfoiled, downfoiled... oh and there's been rumors about some power creep. Those are no longer rumors, that's the mission statement. Next year 'Ragavan' but on meth will make you miss current mono red.

The 50% reduction in inventory is less impressive when you realize a lot of this shit ended up in discount stores like Ollie's and Dollarama for shockingly low prices. They just took the lost and sales stock super cheap.
Now going forward they will have to cut their ambitions in physical products, but liciencing and digital will likely become more of a focus.
Agreed. I was picking up Star Wars, GI Joe, and many other figures that are normally $22-$40 for $5-$6 at discount stores regularly during November and December. I think I spent more on totes to store them then the actual figures themselves.

Cutting print runs is one thing, given not as many boxes sold and they got stuck with them. The hole reprint-everything-to-the-ground policy is what harms more. Why did so many people shy away from Ravnica Remastered? Because many value cards have been overprinted regardless so prices don't add up with box prices these days. That, and the loss of faith after DMR.

I will say one more thing, we stock a lot of imported materials and I get calls from other manufactures (and even competitors) all the time begging for materials because in MFG if you are short one component you can't finish your product, earlier this Friday I had two manufactures calling me asking for pallets of wire, and another pallets of abrasive rolls. Since I keep a large inventory I made two large sales without any impact on production, I profited from other companies pretending keeping a low inventory is smart.
Putting exclusive artwork on the serialized cards should've been done from the beginning. It should've been the only way to get the schematic versions of the Brothers' War artifacts. Slapping a number on a card that otherwise looks like the other millions of copies that were printed in the same set is dumb Timmy shit.
If they really wanted to make it special, commission some artists to hand draw 500 copies of a card and serialize those versions. Basically give collectors something with real value beyond "these 500 copies are special because we said so."
Shit. Include a certificate, verifying that Maro personally dragged his dick across every serialized card if they have to. the super valuable ones will be the ones where he leaves a snail trail.

You talk about reducing inventory (possibly print runs) by 50% and they are not "over producing". However, since they come out with a new product every 6-8 weeks, they are MASSIVELY over producing and destroying reprint equity.
6 to 8 weeks? Wizards doesn’t go a month without hitting the market.
And the "reduced inventory" could be more about board games and plastic toys and less about paper magic. Shillboy Rudy takes it only one way though.

I feel like we may be shifting to a more controlled, focused, and strategic viewpoint from WotC. If they start cutting print runs and variants and prices hold up, like they should, it'll be a wrap. Commander decks will go up to $70 and boxes will likely level out at 110 to 120.

I was hoping for a new low after earnings. Im prepared to yolo one half of a percent of my net worth into Hasbro stock.
I have worked in mfg and distribution for a few decades now, the ownership is always pushing for smaller inventory but 100% of the time it lowers sales and causes shortages, even though they promise they have some new wizards in purchasing that can keep the inventory low... Its not possible. I just disagree based on my years of seeing lower inventory causing massive issues, especially with supply chain issues, and especially with sources overseas. You can keep lower inventory with domestic sources of raw materials, but trying to do that with imports is hilarious, boats get delayed all the time, either from a bottleneck at the docks, or a bottleneck at one of the canals can delay inventory for 1-2 months..
All serialized should have unique artwork moving forward. Furthermore, that artwork should never be used again.

I think you've got you finger on the pulse for Hasbro considering WOTC, but their toy lines are collapsing and they are pissed at Disney for the poor reception of STAR WARS, MARVEL, and other IPs.... maybe that means some positive contract negotiations but its tough to read and speculate what the outcome will be.
I think the success of Warhammer is a bit of a red herring in that most people don't realize just how rabid and devoted warhammer fans really are, its almost unique in gaming nerdom how a warhammer fan will pay almost any price for a plastic miniature. Other fandoms don't have this type of rabid fanbase. I'm not saying other IPs wont succeed but people should temper their expectations.

Way I see it, UB is the FAR better choice. Yes, immersion is toast. I never played MtG for much immersion. Game's mechanics will do good shit with Marvel. They should do a Marvel set per year for a decade. Print 3 Spiderman cards per set, 3 Wolverines, make the product appeal to all the customers. Turn MtG into a place Marvel vs DC happens. Get fucking Dragonball up in here. Do all the anime you can. Also, do a set at least once a year that's very 'classic MtG'. Nostalgia gouge, farm it the fuck up. They are a business, they exist to make money selling cardboard rectangles. The market will buy more rectangles with better licensing deals. And 'real' MtG can piggyback forever on that shit being profitable. Forever. Just like paper CAN piggyback off digital forever. Won't, but it could. Still, ride her out until she's done.

Wizards already had serialized cards with unique art with March of the Machines. The praetors had it and they looked great, though overall I agree. Not a fan of universes beyond
LOTR Magic with the serialized and 1 Ring card made sense at least somewhat to be pricey. Fallout is popular as well too sure, but there is no iconic chase to even make sense. The prices are crazy, Pre-orders for $323 which are 12 packs What in the taco is hasbro doing.
Not excited for any universes beyond. Star Wars would be the only one that I would spend money on. Could that be a thing in the future?

The problem with the reliance on the Universes Beyond stuff is that eventually you run out of tentpole IPs that WoTC can leverage...and then what? MtG's own brand has suffered and will continue to suffer because of it. That is when the golden goose dies.

All financial aspects aside (or not), those Universes Beyond sets get me a bit worried.
Sure, LotR and Warhammer 40k make sense within MtG fantasy/sci-fi setting (LotR even being the Grandpappy of all that is fantasy), even Doctor Who, although you have to stretch it a bit, has a Planeswalker vibe and somewhat of a public convergence, but Fallout, FF and Marvel?
I'm a huge fan of most of those franchises, but WotC should keep a form of coherence when they choose their licences.
Because I understand the excitement, but once the FOMO has settled and we've had a couple of years with franchises straying further and further from Magic's core visual atmosphere by having He-Man, or Garfield of Fifa Universes Beyond, and what would the average kitchen table deck look like?
An army of Wolverine, Caith Sith, Donna Noble, Massacre Girl and Fluttershy, with lands from the Wasteland, Middle Earth, Dominaria and Hunger Games?
This will more and more look like a way too modded Skyrim, not like Magic. Although it might be a fun concept for some, Magic also needs a form of atmospheric coherence, it's one of the reasons this game still has an aura most other TCG don't have, before they crash and burn.
To sum up, although Universes Beyond sets aren't a bad idea in themselves, too much dispersion might ultimately kill what makes Magic special and unique, ultimately turning it into the Funko Pop of TCG.
Not to mention that, although for the moment WotC chose licenses with a long history, there's also the risk of some licenses aging poorly, like the TV series of GoT or the Witcher, while Magic's own lore is relatively ageless.
Even the notion of "Crusade", despite the current madness of a handful of cooky blue and green haired hysterics online, still remains part of our culture, positively and/or negatively, and will do so for the foreseeable future.
Will the same be true for the very blessed Tifa, the Survivor, or even superheroes, once Disney has burned all the licenses to the ground?
In my area, a lot of LOTR fans that purchased product have started to sell off the cards they have. They are asking way too much for what they have, trying to get back the money they spent. If they have a one ring or bowmaster then they double it. Universe Beyond will not keep any cross over fans to stick with MTG.

I was reading the annual numbers for 2023 and they looked very poor. I only have digital magic collection and no skin in hasbro, but I was contemplating about taking a stake in the company, due to all the negativity I see online surrounding Hasbro and mtg. I knew the bar for earnings was pretty low, but I was still expecting a big sell off in Hasbro stock after earnings. It never happened, so Im not buying.

Normal guys would ban Hasbro products and never would buy a stock from a company they are not believing in. They would have moral issues - because they are humans with real emotions.
An Investor just look at the data and will buy whatever will benefit his portfolio. It doesn’t matter if the company is corrupt, sell weapons or is named Hasbro with that ongoing policy towards customers. They sleep well.
