Mr Goodman is over 70 years old here and he is playing with such speed, precision and energy that a man half his age would have a hard time keeping up. But then, Good man is a legend for a reason.

FYI for all you aspiring clarinetists out there, he's on an altissimo A with one hand around 3:15 and then he slides it up from A to B to C for the finish. Amazing chops and at the age of 71, too.

listening to Benny Goodman play the world is waiting for the sunrise brings me back to fond memories as this was the 1st tune I played on my dad's t.v. show, The Ozzie Bowen Show, in Jackson, Miss back on the late 1950s. I that night played this tune on my tenor banjo.
Benny Goodman was a musical genius as was my dad, Ozzie Bowen.

withoght a doubt to the above comment and to this day there has been nobody of that standard and fluency on the clarinet since. An absolute master of an instrument.I have played clarinet since the age of 10 years going pro from the age of18on tenor ,I am now 63'.So all you budding young clarinet players keep practiising and practising , and above all use those ears to listen to Benny and you will learn a great deal. Please know that many musicians are able to play what they are thinking. That is one of the artcrafts of being a good player (in many styles--not just jazz), or a good conductor or composer for that matter. As for "Benny's Burn," I worked with 2 players who sat with Benny (all gone now) and neither one of them had one good thing to say about him other than he could really play ++well. And, these guys had nothing but good to say about other leaders they were with: J. Dorsey, Thornhill, Kenton.

@ShadowsOfLite I can think of no one better for a clarinet player to emulate than BG. His work with his small groups is still astounding. Just don't let falling short of Goodman paralyze you like it did me for almost a year and a half - I got so frustrated that I couldn't come close to Goodman (and Artie Shaw, for that matter) that I just gave up clarinet in my sophomore year of college). I ended up switching to the bass clarinet.

Interesting statement, thanks. Jazz baroness Nica de Koenigswarter published a book called 'Three Wishes', in which she asked many of her great jazz friends what they would wish for. A surprising number wanted 'to be able to play what I hear inside' (J.J. Johnson, Sonny Rollins etc.) or 'to master my instrument' (Jimmy Garrison, Charlie Rouse, Spanky DeBrest et al). Published 2008 by Harry N. Abrams, NYC.

Why do we constantly refer to Benny's playing and style as simply 'swing'? To me this is a banal generalisation that does the great man a disservice. Can anyone seriously argue that this is not jazz of the highest order? For what it's worth,l consider Benny to be one of the 'jazz greats'. Listening to him play is whiskey straight from the still...Pure and unadulterated !
