  • I've enhanced the 1980 Week 14 game between the Cowboys and Raiders. This one is definitely not going to win awards for appearance, but it's a lot better than it was. The original recording was very dark and noisy, and I've used Topaz and Resolve to fix both of these problems. You can see before/after screenshots here -- imgbox.com/g/u.... One note - the close-in shots appear somewhat distorted and squished. This must've been something going on with that particular camera lens, since the other angles looks fine to me. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files for this project.

The 1974 game was meaningless because Oakland had already clinched their division and Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs the week before. The 1980 game was the only meaningful game between Dallas and Oakland during those years.

By the time I learned about the Raiders I was already a Cowboys fan.

Super Bowl XII is probably the closest the two came to facing each other in the title contest. It would have been an interesting matchup, because I don't the Cowboys would force 8 turnovers against that Raider offense, like it did with the Broncos. However, Oakland's defense wasn't as good as Denver's, so the Cowboy offense might have had more success. Pure speculation, I know.

Brookshire and Summerall were the top CBS team, and they acted like they didn't know WTH was happening. The personal foul that nullified a 4th down for Dallas was a killer, and they barely mentioned it. Then Summerall just couldn't figure out why Charlie Waters stopped the clock by going out of bounds when the change of possession stopped it regardless. He said a couple of good moves toward the middle of the field could've ended the game when there were 16 seconds left. What?? Interesting side note; the Joe Montana legend was beginning simultaneously in the 49ers Saints game.

Especially since before this matchup, they last played in 1974!. Many longed for a Dallas Oakland match up in the Super Bowl. Incredible feat of defying the odds Considering that the Cowboys were in the NFL/NFC Championship 12 of the first 18 Super Bowl years. Oakland was also in 12 of the 18 AFL/AFC Championships in that same period.

I've run into Cowboys fans who use the outcome of this game to argue that Dallas would have won the Super Bowl over Oakland in '80 if they'd faced each other, which (their argument goes ) would have happened had the NFC Championship been a home game in Dallas instead of frigid Philadelphia...which would have occurred, had Dallas held onto their lead in the final game of the season against the Eagles (and won the NFC East instead of Philly).
Its all hypothetical - my own opinion is that Oakland was by far the hottest team in the playoffs that year, and probably would have defeated any team they faced in the postseason. They knocked out the '80 Chargers in the AFC Championship, which was likely Coryell's strongest overall SD team (prime Air Coryell + strong DL), and came up with a clutch last-second INT to hold on and beat the "Cardiac Kids" Browns.

Long time Cowboys fan here. I've been watching a number of Dallas games from The 1980 season. Aaron Mitchell played very well, had a number of big time interceptions that year. However he got traded to Tampa in 1981. What happened? His career eventually sputtered due to injuries shortly afterwards.

I tried looking up info about the trade (as I'm sure you did), but didn't find much. All it says is that Dennis Thurman passed him on the depth chart, making Mitchell expendable. I see also that Dallas signed Michael Downs in the 81 offseason after he went undrafted. Downs became a starter immediately. I don't know if the Mitchell trade occurred before or after the Downs signing.

When I googled him...I read what you read. To go from how well he played in 1980...to getting traded despite starting 2 rookies (Everson Walls..and Michael Downs) to start the 1981 season...was risky for Dallas. And to only get an 11th round pick for Mitchell.....dont quite understand why such a low return from Tampa for Mitchell..given his play in The 1980 season.

Everyone seemed pissed at Charlie Waters for going out of bounds? (on the interception on the 2nd to last play). Landry looked pissed, although it could be about something else I suppose. Then the announcers went in on him for whatever reason. It was the smart play, maybe he fumbles and the Raiders take it back for a touchdown. If he was a younger player I'd say return it for all your worth. When it comes contract time they will have forgotten the play and only see the statistic of a big return and possible touchdown.
