The 1977 Cowboys are the most underrated GREAT team in NFL history. Despite being the last team to lead the league in total offense AND defense, they are never mentioned as being one the Top Ten greatest teams of all-time. Their exclusion from Top Ten lists becomes even more absurd when you consider the FACT that they outscored their playoff opponents 87-23.

@@muckerwood Yep, as much respect as I now have for those 70's Steelers (still despise them) I do think the 77 Cowboys was one of the top 5 teams of all time! Been a Cowboy fan since watching them beat the Dolphins as a kid (6 years of age) and been a fan since and this version of the Boys had it all.
We had the offense, run game, pass game, and defense was legendary and great special teams not to mention one of the greatest football minds to ever step on a field in Landry.
Yep, think we would have had our retribution. Had to wait on Troy, Mike and Emmitt to get us one against the Steelers, but we still owe them one!
Now, don't get me wrong, as I have gotten older I have learned to respect the great teams of the '70s and Steelers were a fantastic group, as were the Vikings, Raiders, Dolphins and for a year or two the Broncos. Quite simply, the best decade ever in the NFL!!

@@sjames9005 Exactly! In light how much the Redskin passing game was dominated by the Cowboy defense, Washington was lucky the final score wasn't more lopsided than it was. Being "tough" is all well and fine, but it's not nearly enough. As a QB, one has to be *effective,* and Kilmer looked like an amateur in this game. By the time Theismann was finally put in, the game was already over.

Even though I loved Allen, it was time for him to go. After getting drubbed by the Vikes in the 76' playoffs the Skins had an extremely easy schedule in 77'. Outside of the Cowboys and an end of the year game against the Rams the Skins played no other playoff teams. They struggled with the hapless Bucs in a 10-0 yawner and couldn't score consistently the rest of the year as they put up less than 200 points for the entire season. The Cowboys swept both from the Skins as it became a transitional year for the Skins. They finally began to move away from Kilmer and went with Theismann.

    • @FredPena-rd5cf

Yes, the last 14 game season. I was crushed that the Skins wouldn't make the playoffs. I was 11 and was sad the it was George Allen's last year as coach. I had been too young to recall the '72 team. By the time i discovered the Redskins, they were at the end of the Allen years. I loved Billy Kilmer too. And i was sad he wouldnt be the fulltime starter the next year. There were few great games by the Redskins of the last two Allen seasons. But i always felt they were still on the brink of turning the corner. Even though they were really on their last leg.

I respect George Allen’s as a head coach. He innovated the nickel defense . Everywhere he was, he built winners dating back to the Chicago Bears. However, Alan stuck with Billy Kilmer way too long. Alan could’ve gone with Sonny Jurgensen in his last 2 1/2 to three years. Sonny’s deep passing scared the hell out of Allen. Joe Theismann started too late in his career. Allen could’ve developed Joe earlier and he could’ve been successful.
