Thank you for such a clear brilliant solution! Years ago I went to a big box hone improvement store and bought painters drop cloth to sew slip covers for my sofa, it never got done! Yours looks brilliant!
I bought my drop cloths at harbor freight they were seamless and I washed them and put them in the dryer to make my sectional sofa out of two twin mattresses
I wasn’t really following your measuring tactic, are you supposed to take multiple measurements of one side i.e. “measure from ground to the top of the arm rest and back down” that part i wasn’t completely following, care to clarify??
Yes multiple measurements are needed. Measure from the ground to the top of the arm rest. Top of arm rest down to the seat cushion. Across entire seat from left to right. And then continue the same measurements on the other side by going up from seat cushion to top of arm. Top of arm down to ground. Basically you need the linear measurements of the length and width.
This was inspirational. I was given an armchair from work. It's blue, but I wanted a grey colour. I was thinking of upholstery, but after watching this I'll get some fabric and the upholstery pins (first time I've heard of these ... game changer lol) and try a few creative experiments. Im going to give this a try. Thank you for sharing. How sturdy are the pins? I have 2 older dogs they're pretty chill but im just worried about it falling off and one of then stepping on a loose pin.
They hold well from my experience, but always test them yourself to make sure they will work for your situation! I don’t have kids or dogs so I’m not experienced with those concerns.
Tina , if you have dogs or toddlers, please don't use pins anywhere around them. There are lots of other DIY videos about how to stitch sofa covers, and some are very easy to make.Give it a try.
Thank you so much! My dogs are slobs abd have destroyed my couches. At this point I just want something to cover it and that I can take off and wash. This is really helpful!
I have dogs too. Yesterday I successfully cleaned my sofas (after good vacuuming ) w a friggen glass pot lid. Yup, vids on yt. I wrapped lid tightly with a steamy hot towel (repeatedly). You can see filth on towel as u apply lid to couch in circular motion. Yt vids offer various diy soap concoctions. I soaked my towels in hot water w Dawn / Borax. Now covering brand new looking furniture for dogs.
Definitely don’t use the pins! I’m not sure of another approach since I have a fabric sofa. Maybe look into Velcro or heavy duty double sided tape? Although those might leave a residue behind… anyone else have suggestions for Ann?
I’ve seen safety pins used. Just have to pin the fabric together from the underside, setting the safety pins in the folds so you keep the shape of the wrapped area.
Hello, to order sufficient fabric do we add 200cm (2 meters) to the length of the couch as well as the measurement from the bottom of the back of the couch to the bottom of the front? These are the 2 measurements we work with?
Hi Sheila. I’d recommend adding roughly 2ft (60cm) to the length and width of your couch measuring the way I described in the video. This is just a rough estimate to make sure you have enough fabric to work with… best of luck!
Great tutorial! My couch has arms like your couch, which don’t come all the way to the front. So glad to see how you handled that situation. Just on general principles, cover or not, I will never again buy a couch that doesn’t have square lines. LOL. 😎❤️ Question: could the drop cloths be dried in a dryer with just air, no heat? I have a 1/2 size washer so I will have to go to a laundromat and the thought of lugging large wet material is daunting. BTW, I have heard that rinsing with vinegar added softens the drop cloths. ???
Lol yes the “T-cushion” sofa is now a purchase I regret! I couldn’t find any premade cover that accommodated this style so therefore took matters into my own hands. Hm that is a good question.. I have not tried that and can’t really give a good answer. If you do try it out, please let us all know how it goes and if it maintains it’s size. I think it would helpful to others in a similar situation. I have also heard vinegar is a good fabric softener! I have only used it for towels but don’t see why it couldn’t work for the drop cloth as well. Hope this helps and good luck with yours!!
Kind of pants are those if you sit down on the couch when you’re done come by pop out for a run a couch that you’re screwing it in or pinning it to you sit down all the food pop out.. Or what if you have a fake leather or leather couch she cannot use pins
Hm for the seat area maybe a long dowel that you can tuck under the main back seam? That might help lock it in place. And then maybe do some small hand stitching on the sides to keep it in place? Or those small button snaps you can hand sew onto the sides. Not totally sure if that would work but just some ideas!
I was looking for a pet protector for my leather sofas, all the pet protectors are so ugly and doesn’t protect side from scratches, this is a way better solution, thanks for the fold ideas I don’t have to cut anything.
Ive also been making white cotton damask removeable covers for my sofas since 1992. When someone sits one your sofa it will all come undone. Luckily its a pale neutral colour and you could simply cover the seat with a white throw, tucked under the back cushions. Then another throw along the back of the sofa, white or faux fur. It would be much easier for you and look the same 😊 🌺🇬🇧
It really depends on what material your couch is. Mine is a looser weave fabric so the pins go in nicely. But it you have say a leather sofa it would definitely puncture the material and leave a mark. I’d do a test run in a non conspicuous area first to see how your couch holds up. Hope that helps!
This looks very practical and useful, and I think it's perfect for times when you have to sleep on the couch. The only thing I don't like about covering it that way is that you lose a lot of the aesthetic value of the piece. For example, my sofa is a Bellini sofa from Manhattan Home Design and one of the things I like the most about it is its tan leather upholstery, but anyway, in cold weather I usually cover it with blankets to try and make it cozier. I think I'll start doing it the way you do it. Thanks for the tutorial!
This is exactly what I'm looking for. I currently have blankets on my couch, but they never stay in place & it's multiple non-matching blankets so doesn't look the greatest. Can you clarify how to take the measurement though? Thanks!!
They are upholstery pins. I’ve linked them in the description. I don’t have kids, but I’d imagine they would pull on them! Plus they are pokey/sharpe so I’d be cautious around the kiddos
This is SO helpful since it would cost alot for me to reupholster my sofa. What size was your sofa ? Mine is about 7ft so I'm not sure if I need a bigger drop cloth or the size that you listed in the description.

I haven’t had any issues with the pins, but every couch is different. I would try them in an inconspicuous area first to make sure they don’t damage your couch. Hope that helps!
In lieu of the pins (which are great) try putting the cardboard tubes from paper towels or gift wrap between the sides, back and seat. Terrific video - can't wait to do this!
@@christinedavis8329 thank you that is such an amazing tip because when I first did it ,the material kept shifting... definitely something I'll do so thank you.

Stellar idea for couch cover! I was thinking my hands would start hurting too so maybe pushing that in with wooden spoon or a paint stick. 🙏💯
