Hey Scotty I have a question in my 06 Lincoln town car the plastic valve cover had blown a hole in the rear bank next to the brake booster, I can see right into the cam lob not sure how it happened but it has me really worried because I don’t see how it could have happened the car still starts up fine and drives fine no check engine light or anything please help Scotty

@Jeffrey Johnson I still remember when Circuit City started it's downfall by forcing us to sell their DIVX rental scheme and they stopped selling Major appliances which are big time profit products, we weren't surprised when the Morons in Richmond, VA decided to spin Carmax off to protect it.
@Jeffrey Johnson Yup. you paid like $2 and you could play it for like 48 hours once you first put it in the DIVX dvd player. They you could rent it again later if you wanted to. What killed DIVX was the Studios refused to back it because it was a stupid idea. Corporate management tracked DIVX player sold by store and it was so bad they made the department sales managers stand by the DVD player wall and pimp the machines. I hated it!

That's exactly what happened to my car the battery was weak and it just started going goofy intermediate windshield wipers didn't work all kinds of lights came on in the dash. A good battery took care of all that and the codes were reset. It runs like a dream...

I love having an obd reader in my diesel tow rig as I drive. It allows me to keep an eye on boost, transmission temp, oil temp, and plenty of other important gauges that don't come in the dash from the factory. Keeping an eye on those stats while towing seems like a way better way to protect my drivetrain than going without.
I bought my 2010 corolla because of you sir Scotty. I do maintenance by myself because I love to do it and seek advice thru your vids.

I got a bama tuner on my 97 cobra. I keep it plugged in the Obd to view temps and voltage. Is that also bad to do?

What about that Progressive Snapshot device, which is basically a OBD recorder? Could it damage the vehicle in the long term?

2005 Toyota sequoia SR5 I like going off riding all the time I love spitting off off-road but I have an issue when I press on the gas my speed limit won’t go over 90 how can I remove that or make it faster to go over 90 mph….

I bought from Carmax, I wanted a long wheelbase Lexus LS460 and carmax was the only place I could find one. Buying experience was good and 90 day warranty helped fix some minor issues. The extended warranty they sell you is garbage however.

off subject but i'm working on a 2006 Subaru Tribeca, i took the timing chain off without turning the engine over so that cylinder 1 is at TDC, how can i get cylinder ! to TDC without the timing chain on?

Right on the battery. My car was doing weird things, the radio stopped working and the seat belt warning wouldn't ding. The dealer changed the battery and the main power cable as there was corrosion. All under warranty.
I have to ask out of curiosity, was it a used car or new? That's some really terrible battery and cable quality if it goes bad still under warranty on new car.
I just replaced my battery before last winter just to be sure since the original battery was 7 years old and the voltage was getting slightly too low.

Scotty, I have a clean 2004 Avalon but the wipers make noise on the downstroke. I've replaced the blades a couple of times but it makes no difference. I did replace the wiper motor when I bought it (not OEM). Could it be the motor or perhaps the linkage?

After I change the 5 year old battery from my 2006 saturn vue the check engine light turned off. I noticed it ran rough for 1 hour after changing battery and then smooth again. I agree bad battery can set codes off

Sooooo was it the OBD port mile tracker thing that "will ruin your car"? I ask because I have low mileage per year insurance and they track your mileage using one of those devices.

Maryland doesn’t have yearly inspections, you only need an inspection at the time of sale.
We've similar companies that have cropped up here in the UK in recent years, this video is a reminder to apply common sense and view a deal as a whole entity. Namely viewing the whole picture as a long term purchase.
My BT OBD reader, along with the app is designed to operate while driving 🤷♂️
Md inspection is only when you register ur car with the state or you sell it. Though we do have emissions every 2 yrs
When you register your used car. New ones doesn’t need inspection, for obvious reasons.
Scotty!!! What should I do for a manual base Toyota Matrix 170k km (105k miles) NO maintenance history!!!
Carfax shows 7 pervious owners nothing else! Guy I bought it from only had for 5000km. Ontario so it was certified for every owner.
I got an oil change, new front bearings/brakes, checked all the fluids and swapped/cleaned all the filters. Serp belt is new, previous owner did it.
15 year old car and looking forward to the next 15 years!

NJ State inspection only checks the emissions. They abandoned safety inspections decades ago.
Not true. Just had 2 cars inspected and they also looked at the tires, lights, signals, and drove the car a few feet to check the brakes

I use to porter vehicles to dealerships from auctions, and from dealerships to auctions. Some of these dealerships were Carmax.

We have a 2006 satutn Vue. Love the honda motor in it. But there's a whistle sound when accelerating. We've had it SO Many places and no one can find anything wrong. Have you any suggestions of what this could be. Been driving for quite awhile like this but it is SO Anoyying. Can you help?
Check for crack in the air intake system. Older vehicle will have something like that. I had a cracked hose before.
I live it when you talk about certain vehicles being " high maintenance, or "they wear out pretty quickly...get rid of it before it's gets too old." I am tempted to ask if you're only talking about cars...:).

Disconeected ABS and speed sensor also make the check engine light on. Glad it can be fixed with simple OBD scanner.

Here is a thought. I live in NE Tennessee. If I take to Bristol VA to get it inspected, would that work to have them fix any problems. Different state, but a 90 day war for something that needs fixed...? Just a thought....What say you Mr Scotty?
According to the video the dude lived in Maryland where he had to likely register it. He bought in a Georgia mar max. So the Maryland CarMax did the inspection and fixed safety problems for free.
MD only requires inspection on initial purchase in order to get it registered. After that, only emissions every other year.

4:23 WHAT... if you have a ScanGauge or UltraGauge that displays live data like: coolant temperature, oil pressure, RPM, etc.? They're supposed to be left plugged in all the time.

You are correct they wanted to do a goulish procedure of taking out the fuel tank for ethanol; the issue ended up being a cracked hose at the break booster.
That said the OEM is hardly any better at diagnosing their own vehicles sometimes.
I got Skoda fabia that doesn't have any temperature gage (only warning light if the engine is overheating). so on long rides i do connect fixd to obd port to get temperature data.
Yeah. its insane that some cars don't have temp gage. Had to drive a new opel van at work and it didn't have a temp gage. I would never buy a car like that for myself.
I wonder how much it cost to drive to GA to pick it up, vs $250 delivery charge.

I saw something I liked!
When I bought a 2016 Subaru Impreza at CarMax in 2019, they provided me a sheet that listed all the inspected items. Half of the brake measurements -- the ones for the left rear and the right front --were marked "N/A." I should have realized how weird that was. Less than 3,000 miles later it needed the left rear brake pad and rotor replaced (assuming my mechanic didn't lie to me) even though I baby the brakes by braking gradually & early. The car also had a lot of rust underneath that they didn't mention.

@@scottykilmer hey Scotty I have a “Range Technology” active fuel management diasabler on my silverado 12 lol ik ik it’s a Chevy 🤣 but u think that’s as bad as having those scanner ones. Mine is for it can trick the computer into staying in v8 instead of changing from v4 to v8 when I acceralate (I heard you get lifter problems overtime unless u tune it to stay in v8 or get the obd tool)
@@billymeador5341 My 94' Celica is a non-interference engine. I ask Scotty one time on one of his Live Thursday afternoon chats and he verrified it.
It's still unbelievable to me that you don't have to get a technical inspection on your car...
@@captinbeyond man that's a good thing. You have to get a technical inspection once a year to make sure you are not putting your life at risk or other people's life.
I got a 2007 honda civic manual. Got it for 3000. It's just hit 200k. Still runs like crazy. Had a guy offer me 4k today. I only got it because scotty said hondas were reliable.
Those obd2 plug ins draw power from the battery if you leave them plugged in after u turn the engine off

I forgot to remove my Bluetooth OBDII reader, did not know that could cause problems. I think it did draw power, because when I went out the next day to check the codes, my tablet connected to the OBDII before I even put the key in.

I installed a keyless starter in my daughters ‘18 Santa Fe.
It was hit and miss on starting and did odd things.
Luckily it didn’t ruin the vehicle.
why do it? keyless is easier to steal
I had a aftermarket remote start on one of my trucks. I couldn't park it in the garage because there would be times I'd hear it randomly start at 3 am for no reason and run for 30 minutes.

I know the hat the windows from n rear are considered part of the vehicle structure but that shouldn't be permitted. Once they break then vehicle lose much structural strength and it doesn't protect if in a vehicle that is rolling over and over several times .
