Trust me, as an old guy who grew up with the Beatles in the 60's, the more you listen to the full, uninterrupted side 2 medley, the more you will realize how amazing it is.
I never understood why Cds split up " The long one" I remember at the time myself and many Beatles fans thought, WtF have you just done.
Side two should be listened to without the breaks as it was intended no pauses no stops just continuous music. I seem to remember that at the time there were cd players that allowed you to click no pauses so you could ... but come on apple get a grip. Its 2022 no F**king pauses on the long one.
The "medley" is a sequence of song fragments.

Exact! Side 2 needs to be heard uninterruptedly, as if it were a suit. Cutting each song as they did in the later productions for CDs is a crime, the entire album loses all its meaning.
This album was recorded in 1969, 53 years ago, and no one has matched it in all those years. It's Untouchable.

That's your opinion, sir. Totally respectable and reasonable but please don't state it as an engraved in stone fact. I personally prefer quit a lot of either more modern or older albums from various other artists, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Hell, it's not even my favorite Beatles album, that would be the white album.
It truly incredible how prolific they were with coming up just insanely catchy melodies, let alone the atmosphere they brought to it. It's funny how John thought that side 2's melody was "rubbish", just goes to show how what they thought of as garbage was still pure gold.

@@fourseasons4105 I agree with Roberts statement. Their most polished album in my opinion & I'm sure I'm not the only one. That is not to say that anything from Help & above isn't amazing, they are only fractionally behind this but can see how others may prefer other albums. They are all masterpieces.
George wrote and sang "Something" They were all 4 so talented. The greatest band in the world.

All my life, I've heard people talk about how a beautiful piece of art will move them to tears - not from the emotions of it - but just out of the beauty of it. I never understood until last week when I listened to Abbey Road for the first time in like 15 years, and when he hits that note in Golden Slumbers I just started crying. It's an amazing album.

You gotta consider the medley as one thing and have to listen to it from "never give me your money" to "your majesty" in one go, it's one big song and should be judged as such IMO. And that's one of the reason why it's a masterpiece.
Yes, and the surprise of "Her Majesty" is completely lost when you listen to it as a separate song. It was originally not listed on the album track list and should have been left that way.
You're talking about Abbey Road (The Long One), the strangest, most perfect medley ever.

@@graemeking7336 I th ink you have to start with "You never give me your money" because it's reprised in "Carry That Weight" and makes a bookends effect.
Her majesty should not really have been on the record. It was supposed to go between Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam but Paul didn't think it worked so he asked for it to be deleted. The technian however, new to the job, had been told never to throw away anything The Beatles recorded, so he added it to the end of the master tape. Because of the gap, noone noticed it until production.
Side 2 of Abbey Road is amazing. They were pieces of songs that had never been completed and were all hooked together. Truly incredible.
I never liked when they did that. Always felt like they ruined good songs by haphazardly mixing it with a below average unfinished one.

@@monica11760 It’s a just a bunch of completely average songs, ones they would have never thought were good enough to put on the album anyway, Golden slumbers is ok at least. Also Paul’s part in Day in the Life absolutely ruins the song and every other song they do that with to. Combining completely different songs does not make them better.
I love side 2 of Abbey Road, and didn't find the songs average at all. There are probably many people who would agree with both of us.
The End was their farewell absolute genius.

IMHO "Because" is the most beautiful of the Beatle creations. The music is unbelievable and the lyrics are heavy without being preachy. Pure Gold.
I couldn’t agree more. Have you heard the remix of this tune that was done for Cirque De Soleil? They basically removed much of the instrumentation so the vocals are completely exposed. And they’re wonderful. Bear in mind, this was done BEFORE the advent of digital “pitch correction.” Our boys actually had to sing it in tune- in “real time!”

I love Paul's vocal line in this song.
Starr was only 29, Lennon was only 28, McCartney was only 27, and Harrison was only 26 when they released Abbey Road. Incredible.
I've been listening to this album for, almost literally, my entire life and it still gives me goosebumps, especially the medley.
Andre, the vocals:
1. Paul can sound exactly like George or very similar to John, or just be himself. That’s where most of the confusion comes from imo. Paul’s natural voice is deep and soulful, capable of high falsetto as well.
‘Golden Slumbers’, ‘Oh Darling’ ‘Here, There and Everywhere’.
Paul is much more prone to sentimental, nostalgic, apolitical, whimsical ✍️ .
2. John has the very nasal delivery.
‘Lucy In The Sky…’, ‘Come Together’, ‘Strawberry Fields…’
John wrote the more disaffected and political material. His love songs have an edge. His life experience made him slightly jaded while Paul was the eternal optimist by comparison.
3. George has a vocal range equivalent to a fraction of Paul’s. His tone is quavering and delicate.
‘Here Comes The Sun’, ‘Taxman’, ‘Within You Without You’.
George was most drawn to Indian mysticism and ragas, sitars etc.
4. Ringo’s range is narrowest, tho his tone is very rich and soothing. It’s a little ironic that his voice is the most immediately recognizable. The other three would typically build the harmonies for the backing vocals without him because they were so indistinguishable from each other.
‘Yellow Submarine’ ‘Octopus’ Garden’ ‘Don’t Pass Me By’.
Ringo liked country / western music, so they made his tunes more folksy.
Nicely described. Wouldnt say this about Georges vocal range tho. When it comes to vocal range of Beatles members it goes like this (for me):
1. Paul
2. John
3. George
4. Ringo

I’d definitely say John had a more naturally soulful delivery than Paul.
I don’t really think Paul can sound like George at all. I’d say George and John are the most similar sounding. But of course John can bring out that raspiness when he wants to. Whereas George is always laid back and soothing. Paul has a completely different tone than the other three. More rich and I agree soulful. I think his voice is one of those ones that are made for rock n’ roll. And yes I agree Ringo’s voice is the most recognizable, probably because we don’t get to hear it very often.

PS I highly recommend the documentary "The Beatles: Get Back" by Peter Jackson, currently streaming on Disney+. It's a three-parter that clocks in at more than 8 hours, but I was riveted throughout. It follows the Beatles in 1969 as they write and record the songs that would appear on their "Let It Be" album, and a few that would appear on "Abbey Road." The live concert at the end is worth the buildup!

GEORGE was the lead singer on "SOMETHING" and "HERE COMES THE SUN" (he wrote BOTH of them). PAUL is the lead singer on "OH DARLING," "SHE CAME IN THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW, and through to the end, PAUL also sings "GOLDEN SLUMBERS" NOT John, and "MAXWELL'S SILVER HAMMER." RINGO sings lead on "OCTOPUS' GARDEN" and written by him with a little help from George. JOHN is singing lead on "COME TOGETHER," "I WANT YOU." ( oh, and also on MEAN MR. MUSTARD, POLYTHENE PAM and BECAUSE which James Penny below me reminded me that I forgot them....I was tired then, it was late...sorry everyone...LOL)
John also did Because, Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam.
Ringo always got by with a little help from his friends. They loved him. No one ever fell out with Ringo apart from that one time; they felt so bad after they called him to come back to the studio. His drumkit and studio were covered in flowers.
'Because' is a 9-part harmony there is no lead on it.

Actually Patti, John sang EVERYTHING on Come Together. For years I believed Paul was doing that brilliant harmony, a notion that I was disabused of by Geoff Emerick's book. Even then I was in denial until I went back and listened more closely. John insisted on doing all the overdubs himself. Ironically, he is clearly aping a Paul-style vocal on that harmony. It's very reminiscent of the harmony for Ballad of John and Yoko. But it IS John, not Paul.
“And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love… you make.” And that’s how they went out. (That lyric is hanging on my wall.) Nobody did it better. This was fun to watch! Nice job. You’ll be blown away when you start listening to their older albums. The amount of innovation in the matter of 7 years 🤯 But all equally as good.
That phrase reminds me of the "Chris Farley Show" on SNL - the clips I have found do not have the first part of the skit, but it's still awwwwwwesome!

very lovely that they went out on that note. They've actually not done that many "all you need is love" type songs despite that being the reputation. But it's really nice that that's the lyric they went out on. Very beautiful and apropos... that was the final lyric.
One of the CLASSIC albums of all-time. One of the best-sounding albums, too, beautifully engineered and produced. Anyone on the fence regarding The Beatles just doesn't know music. And anyone who writes such brilliant songs is NOT part of a "boy band." They were "boys" who were some of the best musicians we've ever had.

I bought this album in 1969 and played it loudly using the best speakers ever made, the Bose 901's, which also came out in 1969! It was ecstatic!

There's an illuminating experiment: find and listen to "The Beatles'" contemporaries and compare them to "The Beatles".
Or at very least listen to ALL "The Beatles" releases in chronological order. "Beatles for Sale" is warm and relaxed, despite the amazingly busy year 1964. "Rubber Soul" has a warmth and depth lacking in "Rubber Soul". "The Beatles" (aka "White" LP) overtly includes their humor, which is lacking on virtually all their other recordings.
All of there albums and song are amazing
The White Album is the most experimental Beatles album, it has the hardest Rock, beautiful ballads, experimental sound collages, and some very funny songs.
"Her Majesty" was originally not included on the tracklist. It was supposed to be a suprise when you thought the album was over. Paul cut it from the "The Long One" and a technician stuck it on the end so it wouldn't be lost. Paul heard the rough edit and when he thought the album was over he suddenly heard "Her Majesty" and he liked the way the unexpected incomplet song made him feel so he left it on the album.
My dear boy- I am a 74 yr old grandpa who remembers (clearly!) where I was the first time I heard "Abbey Road," one of my favorite albums of all times, and watching your reaction was sheer joy for me. Thank you so much for sharing this! Your video made me not only appreciate how good the Beatles were, but how totally out of the loop I am with respect to current music. May I ask a favor of you? Could you possibly recommend to me a few of your favorite current artists so that I can start appreciating the music of 2022? his reaction made me smile and reminded me of how I felt back in the 80s when I was a kid and I started listening to The Beatles. it's the surprise, joy, that feeling in your chest that can't be explained, the "WOW THIS IS AMAZING WHAT ARE THEY DOING?? WHAT AM I FEELING??? NOW I WANT ALL THEIR ALBUMS, I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO THEM!!!!".
if you want recommendations I'm sure you already know ABBA, but just in case, they are great, they are not just "waterloo" or "dancing queen", their albums from 1977 onwards are all good. check out "the album" "voulez vous" "super trouper" "the visitors" and "arrival". their melodies and arrangements are great. I think they are an underrated band.
now something more recent, try Depeche Mode. get "the singles 1986 1998" CD, or check out the albums "violator" and "songs of faith and devotion".
and now let's get into the 2000s:
Evanescence's first two studio albums "Fallen" and "The Open Door" are good. their live album "Anywhere but home" is good too.
Give Sean Lennon and his band, Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, a try. Their album Midnight Sun captures very Beatlesesque qualities and uses period instruments and production techniques. ruclips.net/video/kmyasZx6pXY/видео.html

Her Majesty was a hidden track and I believe was the first hidden track ever. So if you buy the vinyl it won’t be on the track list on the back. Also I agree that those middle songs are mid alone but when you listen to the last 8 songs all the way through it’s beautiful
Lastly I’d also say listen to the white album or rubber soul. The white album Is a double album so has like 30 songs and a few are definitely meh but I’d say there is 25 or so great tracks and some say it’s Their best album. Personally Rubber soul is my favorite album ever so I would recommend it

Her Majesty was put there to shock people who went to lift the needle arm off the record. I amigine there tere were number of scracthed Abbey Road side twos.
It mad me jump when I first listened to it. Fortunately Her Majesty started before I got to the turntable. But I did jump when it started.

You're exactly right! Those last tracks were meant to be listened to without stopping. Beginning with the "Sun King" they are meant to be heard all spliced together as kind of like one long song. (Listening to one of the original vinyl records you get that experience.) But with the digital age they divided them all up and it it totally loses the impact they were supposed to have. The story with those last tracks is, they were were bits of songs that had been worked on before that weren't really finished and never made it to any previous album, so they spliced them all together as kind of one long song tat sounds like all sorts of cool sounding changeups in one piece of music. Sorry you had to hear them tall chopped up into little short tracks where they lose the effect they were suppose to have.

The one thing that CD's have over the vinyl: I always enjoyed the crazy crescendo of I Want You instantly cutting off and going straight to Hear Comes The Sun.. was so abrasive. I realized later when I got the vinyl that they weren't meant to go right into eachother, but I kinda like it that way.
it's a shame the medley was divided, they should at least offer the whole thing as a single digital file or whatever it is.
I don't use spotify or anything like that, hehehe, I still use records, cassette and CD, mainly records, specially when I listen to them, I prefer how they sound on vinyl, but I know most people today use digital formats, so there should be an option to listen to the uninterrupted thing as it's supposed to be. it should be on their official youtube channel or spotify or whatever.

Oh! Darling. Yeah I agree with you. Been lovin that song since the album dropped 50+ years ago. The soul, the vocals. Check out McCartney's Call Me Back Again live from 1976 tour.
Every Beatles album is different, but all are great! Their 'White Album' will leave a lasting impression on you (my prediction 😎 ).
I grew up listening to the Beatles as each new LP ( Long Player=Album) came out. As some purist will tell you, "The White Album." Is actually called simply, The Beatles. No album art. On a plain (white) background.
But it's called the white Album. I hope that's clear because arguments abound about the title alone 😆
Anyway the original Vinyl album came with four gorgeous glossy photos of the boys and a pull out poster.
The only dud for me is revolution number nine. My cousin tells me on drugs it all makes sense well I never have never will so I'll always skip personally.
Revolution 1 is absolutely great in my view better than the single version but I like that as well. Many have said the Beatles should have cut this down to one really good album.
But no. Though some songs are not beatle great i still like them and there's plenty to pick from.
@@andrewmstancombe1401 When I first heard Revolution 9 I hated it and always skipped it. My friend said he kind of liked it. I loved looking for Paul is dead clues (never took it as more than a game) so I listened to Revolution 9 looking for clues and eventually, it grew on me. I also think it is genius that it leads into the over-the-top "Good Night". It creates a really weird mood swing going from one to the other. Oh and I always though "Can you take be back" was part of Revolution 9. I think Paul cleverly put it there to ease the listener into John's sound collage.

I’m a life long huge Beatles fan and saw them live in 1964. This is my second video of yours I’ve seen, Revolver being the first (wonderful video) and the main thing I love is your honesty. Too many Reactors it seems to me fear alienating their audience if they say they don’t really like a song, but it’s refreshing to hear your views. Like I said, honest.
And P.S…. I laughed at how much you liked Octopuses Garden because it’s generally viewed as a pretty weak song hahaha. You’re great👍
Mind blowing to consider how young they all were at the end of the Abbey Road recording sessions in August 1969: John was 28, Paul 27, George 26 and Ringo 29. Lovely seeing someone discover the Beatles for the first time. Looking forward to seeing more.
I got a tattoo with "And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make". The influence The Beatles had in my life, and the significance that phrase has to me... It deserved to be etched on my skin

Cool of you to catch that "medley" format while you were listening.
Something you should be aware of. Today they have 16 to 32 tracks or more. The Beatles did all their albums, including Sgt. Peppers and Revolver on only 4 tracks. Abbey Road was recorded on 8 tracks.
Possibly the greatest album of all time, stunningly creative & tasteful. BTW the side 2 medley shouldn't really be interrupted.

Fun fact: Ringo Starr does not like doing drum solos. That one during The End is the only one he ever did. And the extended guitar solo during the song is Paul, George, and John alternating turns on guitar for the ultimate solo.
It was just such a great ending to such a special album. I’m not even a lifetime fan and felt certain WAYS!
@@rjisasavage While I was their last to be recorded, it wasn't their last to be released. That would be Let It Be. Most of the album was recorded before Abbey Road, but it wasn't until after that it was finished and released. To me, the two albums are two sides of the same coin. Abbey Road is a daytime album, and Let It Be is a nighttime album.
Think of Let It Be as the epilogue after the grand finale.

Paul McCartney usually sang the more piano dominate tunes...John led the trippy rockers...but also nice guitar ballads...George was lead guitarist...his tunes were very chordal...lots of changes...very harmony centric....Ringo's tunes were crafted for his voice range by John & Paul...he wrote a few of his lyrics...
So vocally....Paul smooth upper range....John nasally bluesy...with a somtime dreamy twang...George mid range...not a screamer...but completed the harmony perfect for the 3....
So glad to see a young guy like you giving the Beatles a try. They are obviously leaving an impression on you, and it's great to see you go through the experience. And yes, the last 10 songs are a medley. Gotta listen to them without stopping to get the most of those transitions. They add to the overall composition. That medley is nothing short of brilliant, regardless of what John Lennon says.
You are so funny! I like you. I was born in italy in 1949 and so in the 60's I was a teenager ( very lucky to live The Beatles live!).Now i'm 73 and lucky to look at teenagers like you listen to The Beatles' songs!😇😇😇

I love the use of synthesizer on this album. Most of the music using synth at this time would highlight it and build everything around it. For The Beatles it was just another instrument.

You can find "BECAUSE" on You Tube with JUST their voices isolated, without the music....it's GORGEOUS. I get so jealous of people who can listen to music through headphones because I have NO idea WHAT that would sound like. I lost my hearing in my left ear to the measles when I was 8 years old (this was in the '50s BEFORE vaccinations for the measles, chicken pox and mumps existed...I had them ALL). Hearing aids and surgery would not restore it. SO I only have ONE good ear.

as a 16 year old who's known the Beatles all her life and loves music from that era, Abbey Road is one of my favorites albums of all time. The Abbey Road Medley genuinely astounds me every time I listen to it. From You Never Give me Your Money, to the iconic base descend of Polythene Pam into She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, to Golden Slumbers which makes me cry every time i hear it from overwhelming nostalgia, to the callback to You Never Give Me Your Money in Carry that Weight, to the phenomenal ending of The End. One of the most musically genius things anyone has ever put out and i will never get tired of it. Even watching your reaction just now to Golden Slumbers i almost teared up.
This was really great to watch. You obviously have a great appreciation for music and art.
I would highly recommend listening to Let it Be next, as well as the Peter Jackson documentary on Disney Plus, Get Back. One of the most incredible experiences for a Beatle fan, and probably surprisingly enjoyable for a non fan. 👍👍
You seem like a true blue lover of music and so this was a really nice reaction. Abbey Road is The Beatles bestest album (in my opine) and therefore a good jumping off point. The greatest band of all time? Yes. But there is so much music from the 60's, 70's and 80's worth listening to I dunno if I can even impress it upon a young man like yourself without sounding pretentious. Cheers!

I love music so much but this is my favorite album of all time. I don’t care for the ones you didn’t like either. It brings me joy to see someone listening to this the first time. It’s probably been more than 1,000 times.
The last string of songs, the medley always just about breaks my heart. Listen to them all in a row, no breaks, knowing they are going to cycle around and come back to the beginning. I do not believe they were intended that way but genius is what genius does.
CANNOT WAIT for you to hear the white album. Watching your vids is like hearing the songs for the first time again. One thing you need to know is that their singles and EPs were usually not on the albums, with a few exceptions, so to get a full experience of their work you need to also listen to both parts of Past Masters

When the album was originally released the last song wasn't listed. So when you first heard it , it was a total surprise, after the long medley ended . So a much different effect, when you wasn't knowing it was coming.

Now, at the age of 67, I grew up with them and they caught me with Rubber Soul. Any following album was a step forward and they didn’t copy themselves. Revolver sounds completely different to the White Album which is totally different to Let it Be (I prefer the “… naked’ version due to the purer sound and 2 added songs Don’t Let Me Down and Across the Universe). Let It Be was recorded BEFORE Abbey Road but released later.
Anyway, my personal favourite album of all time is Abbey Road! The more often you listen to it, the more you go to the hook…

I'm 73 yrs old. I'm glad new generations are finally catching on to what we've been saying about the Beatles for 60yrs. I was 13yrs old when the Beatles first played the Ed Sullivan show. I can say without hesitation that the next day, my friends and I all agreed.......the world had just changed. These 4 guys are extremely special and their impact on music and culture has been immeasurable.

I'm an obsessive Beatles fan and love your honest reactions - p.s easy way to discern whether it's George or Paul singing is to take a look at who wrote the song... after a while you will be able to pick their voices out like members of your own family. Keep reacting!!!!

Really enjoyed your reactions. You know it's a 10, really: you'll be sure the more you listen. Glad you put on the headphones. Listen to Sgt Pepper's with 'em if you haven't yet. I gotta say, although there's a certain charm in flying blind "into the mystic," the more you can learn about the context and history and all, it'll just increase your appreciation of the music. Different songs for different moments; different songs will make different moments. IF you play music, studying the Beatles songcraft is endlessly instructive and enjoyable. Every album has some faves. Rubber Soul ( the pot album) & Revolver (acid album) show the giant steps they took with each release. And they started at the top of the pops groups from the git-go. Listen up, everyone and have fun.
I did an experiment. I listened to the top twenty hits that were on the radio from 1965 through 1969. I listened to what the top artists of that time period . Then I listened to the Beatles recordings from the same time period. Wow. They were way ahead of everyone , with one exception. Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. Rubber Soul inspired Brian Wilson to produce Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds inspired the Beatles to create Sgt. Pepper. What a wonderful time for music.
Great to share this experience with you. Without a doubt one of the greatest listening experiences in the history of recorded music. Thank you for giving me the chance to hear it afresh.
btw - the medley has to be listened as one track. It's a masterpiece.

A certified masterpiece
Everything from "You Never Give Me Your Money" to "In the End" is referred to as "The Long One" because it's one continuous song.
I´ve heard that album on an "8 track Tape" in my fathers car while we were driving around the italian "mountains" of the Toscana in Italy. I was 14 years old and on my summer holidays. Every two hours or so we stopped at a small village and had some coffee and coke and a small snack, then we got back into the car and that 8 Track tape was continously playing that same album...for at least 6 hours. When we´ve reached our hotel after 6, maybe 8 hours my perception of music had changed forever.
Watching this guy made me feel the way i felt the first time i ever heard this album many many years ago. ☮️💟 i love this!!!!

This is the best album. I particularly love I want you (she’s so heavy). It took so many takes to make it from Trident Studios and Abbey Road. In its first part the lyrics are the same but rythm changes in every round. And the second instrumental part is like a mantra, with the white noise of the moog starting to step over and cover this endless chords until it is about to kill it, but the musical whirl is stopped suddenly and unexpectedly by John’s order to cut the song abruptedly. Geoff Emerick had to do it without understanding. Decades later he got John’s message: a song with just a few words sounding like a mantra to the end and then stopped indicatong the end of vynil side A.
I think "I Want You" never ends, it just runs out of record...
@@tlamb1379 Yes, that was the idea. But John decided to cut the recording abruptly at 7:46 min, some seconds before it ended (8:08 minutes) in the whole tape.
Andre, first of all thank you for a great video and your appreciation of these musical icons. I’ve been listening to The BeaTles for 52 years & never grow tired of doing so. Here is my main reason for commenting : think about what I’m about to write; once you’ve read it, think hard and long about it : when they broke up … they were, all four of them, still in their TWINTIES ! When I think about that and what they achieved, it blows me away completely.
