It's just a shame you didn't do my favourite favourite album - not just of theirs but of all time - Sgt Pepper here on YT. Any chance that whilst admitting it's not a first hearing, you could go back and share it with us through your musical sense? And may I recommend The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society (although it might not quite mean the same in the US as it does back here) andBob Dylan's magical Blonde on Blonde? Once you get past his voice you'll love it.
Julia was John Lennon's mother who died when he was a teen
In the blues song, Lennon sings "feel so suicidal just like Dylan's Mr Jones." Maybe you could listen to that Bob Dylan song he's referencing sometime
I don't think there could BE another album with a heavy metal song about a slide, a 1920s broadway number, a weird country song, a classical baroque piece about pigs and a sound collage that goes on for 8 minutes. Only the beatles. 🙃

I absolutely agree! They were able to write any kind of song about any topic and any kind of music style. E.g. Paul‘s „I Will“ & „Helter Skelter“ or John‘s „Yer Blues“ & about his mother „Julia“ etc. Just insane. They never copied themselves… That’s why their music is still „alive“

PS: The only song I can’t stand is #9
...not to mention a serious eco message wrapped up in a children's tune, a Beach Boys pastiche, a bit of doo wop, some blues, a brief snippet of a song possibly even more odd than the aforementioned avant-garde collage, a joyous calypso, a lean towards punk, and an outro via an orchestra. But no psychedelic, they'd done that and moved on whilst others were still sticking with it, and no rap, they'd already done that with the title track of Sgt Pepper. And also, in my opinion, this is their only album with not a single track to feature a so-called 'typical' kind of Beatles track.
Great description. This album is my favorite of The Beatles due to its diversity. However I love the B side of Abbey Road - amazing.
Every time I listen to a Beatles album I say to myself, "this the greatest album ever". Then I listen to Sgt Peppers and I think, "this is the greatest album of all time". Then I listen to Revolver and I think, "No, THIS is the greatest album of all time". Then Abbey Road says, "hold my beer"... I will never grow tired of this band.

Fully agreed on your point. This album changes direction at every track, even when the same lead vocalist/song-writer is in charge. Perhaps the most strident and abrupt changes of all (with maybe Helter Skelter? Long Long Long in the mix) was between Revolution 9 and Goodnight, the latter a song so softly, gently lush that it's rebel-at-heart creator John gave to Ringo to sing rather than be personally tagged by it.

The White Album is their masterpiece. It’s got everything. All the genres they ever attempted and more. It’s art. Therefore, perfection.
"Don't Pass Me By" is pretty good considering it was written by Ringo Starr, the drummer, who was not one of the main songwriters of the group - he only wrote two songs for them. John and Paul dominated the songwriting, with George also contributing fine songs. How many other groups had songs written and sung by each of their members?
The album where the Beatles said YES to every idea they had and we are so thankful for it. Epic album!

I agree! It's their heaviest/noisiest song followed by their gentlest/most ambient song. I love how the album has these little "moments" like these two songs back to back or the "animal trilogy" in the first album or "Revolution 9" and "Good Night" back to back (their most experimental/avant-garde followed by their most conventional/Disney-like track) or the back to back beautiful acoustic McCartney ("I Will") and Lennon ("Julia") tracks closing the first album or the heaviness/rock & roll pieces in the first side of the second album or the child-like trio of songs in the first side of the first album ("Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Wild Honey Pie", "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill"). It's like listening to many different albums spread throughout the entire album.

Ringo is the Beatles drummer and his real name is Richard Starkey. He only wrote 2 songs with the Beatles- Don't Pass Me By and Octopus's Garden. He sings those songs, as well as A Little Help from my Friends, Yellow Submarine and the last song on the white album-Good Night. He also co-wrote and sings What Goes On off of Rubber Soul. Of course Ringo is known much more for his drumming as he is very good at playing what the song needs, or better put... he is a song writers drummer.

On the track "I Will" Paul is actually singing the bass track. The Beatles played something for everyone and every genre like no other band. No limits. I know people who really like Don't Pass Me By" while you didn't. There was always something for you on every album. Helter Skelter was a boundless precurser tp heavy metal a couple of years before heavy metal.

Don't underestimate the bass on these songs...McCartney base leads were epic and very much influenced the bass as an instrument that could be used as a lead not just an acompanying instrument....

Just a little history, this is the Beatles just showing out, in other words, we can play any thing we want any way we want, many of these songs were their unfinished throw aways. It paved the way for budding bands that there are no more rules. Prior to the Beatles everything was formulaic, structured, run by the labels. Afterwords music exploded, they made this happen, broke all barriers. I cannot critique anything they did. You are reacting to timeless music from over 50+ years ago and I appreciate it. Great reaction. This my favorite all time record, I mean how many genres does it cover or did it influence?

Born in 1955, I witnessed their career during the 60s. The first listenings I was confused, couldn’t really pin down that double album. But by the time (and having the 4 portraits on the wall) it became my favourite album. And now you can imagine my confusion again when Abbey Road came in. Totally different atmosphere. Both are my mostly played albums - can’t name my favourite out of them

During the two weeks before this LP was released a local FM radio station played the entire LP, without commercials, every week night for those two weeks. Then, the other hours and during the weekend, all the LP tracks were played at random mixed in with all sorts of earlier "Beatles" songs.

During the early-mid 1970s that same station had a morning DJ who every day played an entire LP so listeners could tape it.

Great reaction! The White Album definitely isn’t their tightest album, but it’s still one of their best. Rocky Raccoon is an underrated classic! For another album that tells a great story, I highly recommend checking out Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie. Excited for the next video!

I love the Beatles so much. You love them more the more you learn about them and the meaning behind the songs. Like Martha, My Dear Paul wrote for his pet sheepdog. Blackbird was written by Paul about the Civil Rights movement... Julia is about John's mother and he plays and sings all the parts on it by himself. I could go on and on...

I LOVED THIS ALBUM. I was 16 yrs old. I played it until I wore it out. You had to have been there when it first came out. In those days, weird was good because it shocked the hell out of our parents and that was good.

Hi Andre, I just watched all of your Beatles reaction videos and I enjoyed every second of it! It’s so lovely to see someone experiencing all these songs for the first time, I wish I could go back to that feeling again. If you, like me just LOVE the Harmonies you should listen to „This Boy“ from 1963. Because it’s a Single you cannot find it on an original album but it is on the Past Masters Album, which is a collection of all singles.

My favorite song on this album is I Will, which is also my favorite Beatles song. The Melody is so simple and sweet, and Paul's singing is amazing. He also is actually humming the bass so it sounds even more sweet. My grandmother used to sing this to me a lot and it holds a special place in my heart.

"back in the u. s. s. r." was the first song of the first album i ever owned. and its the best r&r album ever produced and remains my personal favorite to this day. its a journey through the history of recorded music. a hodgepodge of musical styles and a blissful trip to a world of beatle magic and wonder.

They issued a white vinyl pressing of the white album that year. I bought one last year and they’re a collector’s item. If you got one of those, you have a valuable album…especially if it’s a UK one.

I had all kinds of rare vinyl along with common stuff back then late 70s early to mid eighties punk soul etc. gone
Some of the tracks kind of require you to know something about the times they were written in. For instance, Blackbird was a statement about the civil rights movement of the sixties. Piggies was about greed etc. Pure creativity. Unmatched ever since and probably be forever much like the classical masters will endure.
Even without the context, it’s timeless music

In context: The band had just returned from a not entirely successful retreat to study meditation in India with the Maharashi Mahesh Yogi. Many of these songs were written while there. After returning, there was an undercurrent of animosity among the members that could be felt by the studio's staff. It was so bad at times that some quit rather than watch the band disintegrate. Even the drummer, Ringo (aka Richard Starkey) quit for a period during the sessions.
Many informed critics called these tracks mostly solo efforts which proved to be the underlying reason the diverse musical genres represented. Thus, John would move towards his rock/blues/artsy tendencies, Paul towards his melodic radio-friendly ballads, George towards spiritual and social commentary, and Ringo....he actually wrote his first song which you've noted is a lesser track for you. That's okay. It pretty much misses for everyone at first. After you've heard it 3 times, it develops a certain charm.
This album was also cited as the inspiration Charles Manson used to orchestrate killing several people in Los Angeles. Prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi presented the case that Manson heard messages in some of the tracks that the Beatles wanted him to start a race war, etc., etc. Of course, that had always been the furthest thing the Beatles would want since they'd been very instrumental in abolishing segregating audience members since the very beginning. Nevertheless, it was unnerving the public when the murderers were writing Beatles' song titles or lyrics on the walls of the victims' homes in their own blood.
It is important to note that the Beatles were burdened by the fans believing that they had some kind of mystical powers. I lived during that time and I sort of believed it, too. But it really took hold after it was announced in 1969 that Paul McCartney had actually been killed in a car crash in 1966 and had been replaced with a lookalike. This conspiracy theory even permeates some fringes today. As far as this album goes, it is cratered with clues for those who would care to pursue them. For example, the controversial 'Revolution 9'. John was just trying to make an avant-garde track since that was a growing movement at the time. Multiple tape loops. Panning from one ear to the other. But, if you play it backwards you will hear Paul's car crashing, a fire, and a voice screaming, 'Let me out! Let me out!'. Then, the clincher comes in the form of a voice repeating what can be interpreted as, 'Turn me on dead man. Turn me on dead man'. This took on a whole sort of interactive game following as we would pour over every track looking for other 'clues'. And we found them, of course. We wanted to find them. It was silly but I have to admit that some of them were downright chilling.
Wow, this makes this album even more amazing that we were able to get all of this content out of it. I know Abbey Road is usually gets the top ranking in many people's rankings, but this is up here for me!
”Paul is dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him” if you play the ending of “I’m So Tired” in reverse. Or the “here’s another clue for you all; the walrus was Paul” line “Glass Onion”. Or Ringo’s line in “Don’t Pass Me By” about someone losing their hair in a car crash, or all the mysterious pictures in the collage. So full of little things that created this wicked game. Very entertaining and creepy, but obviously no truth to it.
You were right about the Disney sounding of Good Night. John Lennon (who wrote the song for his first kid Julian (who has released a bunch of albums)) gave it to Ringo to sing and asked the producer, George Martin, to basically Disneyfy the song.

this album is like bits of ten different albums in one. a rock n roll album, a country/bluegrass album, an acoustic folk/indie album, a baroque pop album, an experimental proto-electronic album… that’s the wonderful weirdness of The Beatles in a nutshell, something for everyone lol.
Now you should do the Let It Be album or some of their later singles that didn’t appear on albums, like Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever!

Thanks for your input on this great Beatles album. As someone over 60 who got this album when it came out I can tell you that it was mind blowing at the time. There was nothing out there remotely this experimental and chance taking. Some songs are classics and some were just like nothing you could hear at the time. Some songs make sense if you know the back story on them. Glass Onion mentioned that the Walrus was Paul although John song that it was him on Magical Mystery Tour’s I Am The Walrus. Don’t Pass Me By mentions the line “You were in a car crash and you lost your head” which was tied in with a long standing “hoax” that Paul McCartney had been killed in a car crash and replaced by Billy Shears (who was introduced in Sgt. Pepper)
Julia is John’s song about his mother. Goodnight was written by John but he thought it was too light for his “persona” and so Ringo sang it. There’s a “heavier” version of Revolution 1 (that you’ve probably heard) on the Beatles “Blue” album 1967-1970 hits which is just called Revolution. There’s a lot more but that’s what I can think off the top of my head.

It so reminds me of when I first heard their albums from when I was 10 back in 1970. They still blow my mind now every time I play them. Do you mind me suggesting that you also look into the background of why & how they wrote their songs. Some incredible stories. EG 'Why don't we do it in the road', 'Julia', 'Dear Prudence' etc. It will definitely make you appreciate each their method in writing, arranging, playing & how they came up with their songs. What fun! Every new Beatles record was a big event with my older brothers. This one was wonderful and wild and sweet and weird and perfect when it was new. Still is. Thanks for the ride, reminding me how special each song is, except for a few, and you called them. You are open to so many styles, enjoying the contrasts, watching you is a great way to be reminded how good this old familiar set is. Richard Starkey is Ringo's real name. Don't Pass Me By was the first song he ever wrote. He also wrote Octopus's Garden from Abbey Road.

Those chord progressions on BlackBird are anything but simple....
You'll really enjoy the film Across the Universe. It's got Beatles songs sung by actors, a war, animated psychedelia and of course love stories. Also, check out Harry Nillson who was a personal friend of the band's and considered by them to be the best singer of his time.

A glass onion is a metaphor for something that is clear but has many layers, like the movie does. The phrase existed before the song.
The high voice who sang a line in Bungalow Bill was Yoko Ono, John's girlfriend, later wife.

@rjisasavage yes a glass onion does, but the song lyrics make no sense to the movie at all, they barely make sense period. Lennon's songs were more about feel for the most part.
The nice thing about “Don’t Pass Me By” is that it shows just how much the other three love Ringo (real name Richard Starkey), that they’d support him so much in his first attempt at songwriting. His second was “Octopus’ Garden” on Abbey Road. They were all so supportive of their drummer brother.
Octopus' Garden was a lot better, but he got help from George writing it
I just love how naïve both songs sound. It's like hearing a child trying to compose songs. I just feel like "Don't Pass Me By" should be one minute shorter though, then I might even want to listen to it outside of the album (I really ever listen to it while listening to the entire album).
Motley Crue did a terrific version of Helter Skelter. Saying that, I doubt that anyone of my age can hear the words 'Helter Skelter' without remembering the Manson family and those terrible murders. Some idiots just have to spoil things for everyone.
On a happier note, I had a really cool Grandmother when I was a kid who used to buy me the Beatles albums for Christmas.

So happy you love “I Will” …it is a favorite. The Beatles were the soundtrack of our lives. Most people my age KNOW EVERY NOTE, EVERY Harmony. Never again will there be such a beautiful repertoire from a band. Every album.
Mother Nature's Son would be regarded as the best song of its type, if not for Blackbird ...

I love the White Album. In my opinion it is best listened to in it's entirety. The transitions and contrasts, the sonic journey, are artful and should be listened to from start to finish. IMHO

Your best comment, "this feels like watching a David Lynch" film when listening to "Revolution #9". So true. Good description. I still the way the album ends with the chaos of Revolution #9 and then into the peaceful calmness of "Goodnight" especially with the little whispers. One of my favorites endings to an album.

The 90-minute White Album takes a commitment to get through.....and you have to be in the right mood. But on those days.....ahhhh man, The White Album is righteous. The one-two opening punch of "Back in the USSR" and "Dear Prudence" is incredible. Your take on "Mother Nature's Son" (one of my fave deep cuts on the WA) is spot on. Paul's (untitled) "Can You Take Me Back" hidden at the end of Lennon's "Cry Baby Cry" is one of the Beatles' greatest secrets. As for "Revolution #9", I've owned the WA for about 40 years.....I think I've listened to it all the way through about 10 times. Ringo's "Good Night" (written by Lennon) helps cleanse the palette and end the album on the right note.
"Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime" is one of my favorite songs lines of all time.
I love it when someone new to the album appreciates the goofiness. There are a few legit clunkers for me but I love how they just do whatever the hell they want.
This album is just all sorts of fun!

Paul McCartney has said in interviews that he wrote Blackbird as a response to the civil rights movement going on here in America at the time. Remember, this album came out in November of 1968. Just 7 months after the assassination of MLK.
“Black” obviously meaning black, and “bird” meaning “woman.” Bird was a British slang term at the time used to describe a girl or woman. You can tell with the lyrics in the song how it can be directed toward a young black woman at the time. “All your life / You were only waiting for this moment to be free.”
In other words, it’s not only a beautiful sounding song, but also a beautiful message.

George wrote some great songs, including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (with Eric Clapton playing the solo). But his stand out for me is "I Me Mine" from their last release, "Let It Be".
The unique thing about The White Album is how many genres it encompasses. Rock, country, heavy metal and more including Avant Garde. Listening to the album is an experience that transcends listening to each song on its own.
Funny story. As a kid, I had The White Albhum on 8-Track tape. I loved it so much, I played it probably 200 times, knew all the words, etc. until I wore it out and it broke. Turns out, my tape was only the first disk. Probably ten years later, I was at a friend's house and he was putting on music and taking requests. I said The White Album. He put on disk 2 and I said, what is this? I had no idea and knew none of the songs at all. Blew me away!

The most eclectic Beatles album. It shows the incredible range of their talents doing a "non-concept" album. (FYI; They DID do their share of acid tripping at the time.) Hot tip: there's video of a group of absolutely top-notch legendary rock musicians honoring George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (after George had died) for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame featuring an utterly GOAT guitar performance by Prince. Check it out.
This album is A Masterpiece and what makes this album So Good is when they recorded this album they all provided their own contributions to the album and they all recorded every song in separate rooms within the studio. Eric Clapton was also responsible for the creation of this album

People talk about his song writing and his voice, but I don't think he get's enough credit for being a really funky and innovative bassist

Love how in the first Men In Black movie Tommy Lee Jones brings out that small disc he says is going to replace compact discs, then he says, "Guess I'll have to buy The White Album again". Lol

Why Don’t We Do It In The Road is about where they were going to do their next album cover which ended up being the album cover to Abbey Road.
When this album came out I was 13 yo, and I had gotten my first stereo. Our whole family sat around listening to Revolution 9, trying to figure what it meant. The Panning back and forth was So New!! Yes a double album cost $8.98 and that was a lot. A 45 rpm single sold for 99 cents. I wore out three copies on vinyl. Records got scratched so easily. This is my favorite Beatles Album. When the 50th Anniversary compilation came out and Disc 6, they did a 5.1 remix I was in heaven.
