YES! And they were so intuitive, knowing instinctively just what to do with the little bits of musical ideas that they heard inside their heads or from noodling on piano or guitar. They also absorbed a whole lot of what they'd heard both from other musicians and from the general environment. "Penny Lane" was recorded during the "Sgt. Pepper" sessions but was not included in this album. I love the way it tells the story of a Liverpool street and the characters who inhabit it. You hear some of that same kind of imagery in many of these songs that made it into the "Sgt. Pepper" album too. It was in their slightly earlier songs as well, including McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" and Lennon's "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Norwegian Wood." Every song tells a story, if not explicitly in the lyrics then aurally in the notes, chord progressions, their chosen instrumental timbres, textures, and audio effects. Pure genius!

George Martin cried when he first heard She' Leaving Home. It's a tragic folklore story in different modes going from Aeolian, Dorian and even Mixolydian. @@CrystalShannon4 McCartney saw a story about a teenager running away, and who went missing for awhile (she came to no harm, fortunately). But, when you look at the lyrics, "She's Leaving Home" is actually about an older woman who has lived under her parents' thumb for years, but finally finds the courage to go out on her own with a guy of whom her mom and dad presumably disapprove. It ends positively--"she's having fun". The real sadness in the story is that her self-centered parents, as always, get the whole thing wrong, and think she is deliberately hurting them. Maybe they never will understand their daughter. Some parents never understand their children, ever.

In February 1967, Paul McCartney read about Melanie Coe, a 17-year-old A-level schoolgirl from Stamford Hill, north London. She went missing without her car, cheque book and spare clothes. Her father was quoted as saying, “I cannot imagine why she should run away. She has everything here.” Coe briefly rented a flat in Paddington with a croupier she had met in a night club, and returned home around 10 days after the newspaper report was published.
“We’d seen a story in the newspaper about a young girl who’d left home and not been found,” McCartney recalled in the 1997 biography ‘Many Years From Now’. “There were a lot of those at the time, and that was enough to give us a story line. So I started to get the lyrics - she slips out and leaves a note and then the parents wake up - It was rather poignant.” Lennon’s contributions were more personal, borrowing scornful lines from his stern Aunt Mimi, who had raised him as a child. “Paul had the basic theme, but all those lines like, ‘We sacrificed most of our lives, we gave her everything money could buy, never a thought for ourselves …’ those were the things Mimi used to say,” he told Hit Parader in 1972. “It was easy to write.” It would be years before Coe learned that the Beatles were singing her story. “I first heard the song when it came out and I didn’t realize it was about me, but I remember thinking it could have been about me,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I found the song to be extremely sad. It obviously struck a chord somewhere. It wasn’t until later, when I was in my twenties, that my mother said, ‘You know, that song was about you!’ She had seen an interview with Paul on television, and he said he’d based the song on this newspaper article. She put two and two together.” In one of the more astonishing coincidences in Beatles history, Coe had actually met the band more than three years before “She’s Leaving Home” was written, during their first appearance on the English television program Ready, Steady, Go! on October 4th, 1963. Then just 14 years old, she had been booked to compete in an on-air lip-synching contest. To pass the time during the hours of rehearsals, Coe and her young competitors chatted with the newly minted pop sensations, who had scored their third British Number One with “She Loves You” just a few months earlier. Coe earned the top prize with her high-spirited miming to Brenda Lee’s “Jump the Broomstick,” and McCartney presented her with an autographed Beatles album.

The story benhind the song is even more interesting:
“McCartney was inspired by a story on the front page of the Daily Mirror, about a girl named Melanie Coe.[4] Although McCartney invented most of the content in the song, Coe, who was 17 at the time, has said that most of it was accurate. In actuality, Coe left with her boyfriend, a croupier. She did not "meet a man from the motor trade", although her boyfriend previously had been in that trade.[5] She left in the afternoon while her parents were at work, while the girl in the song leaves early in the morning as her parents sleep. Coe was found ten days later because she had let slip where her boyfriend worked.[6] When she returned home, she was pregnant and had an abortion.[7]
Coincidentally, Coe had actually met McCartney three years earlier, in 1963 when he chose her as the prize winner in a dancing contest on ITV's Ready Steady Go!.”

There is so much someone could miss when listen to this album today. (1) The novelty of this entire genre of music for its time - absolutely cutting edge. (2) There were no digital tools to make sounds like this back then, as no one would think you'd ever need to make sounds like this for music. They literally had to take tape of their music, cut it up physically with scissors, turn it backwards and mix it up, etc. to make those garbled sounds and distortions. (3) The climate of the times and how this fits in with the Beatles' personal journeys is a part of interpreting the meaning of the songs.

I love the blend of technical and artistic sensitivity you bring, and I'm blown away by your knowledge and very real emotions. 9 months ago I discovered your channel and didn’t know what to expect, but it didn’t take long to see how empathic you are towards music and lyrics, Crystal. I have seen many reaction videos on RUclips and most of them are people be-bopping to the music, swaying back-and-forth, frequently pausing, and having fun which is cool. But you, you take it all in and I see it in your eyes and on your face. You’re not just listening to the music, you FEEL it with every inch of your heart, mind, and soul. It’s like a sonic boom wave that hits your whole body and central nervous system and you being a musician, singer, and fan, you get it. To this day, I have never seen you hit a false note. You are one of the kindest, sweetest, most genuine and sincere people I have ever crossed paths with.
This is why I say you’re not a reactor, Crystal. You’re so much more than that. You’re a musical empath and a translator of music who teaches us so many things we never would have known without you. Watching you fall in love with the music of The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc. has made me so very happy and inspired. You got me to listen to these songs and albums again through fresh ears and an open mind and heart. Thank you. 🙏

Now many know this but Ringo was actually left handed drummer playing a right handed drum kit. To put this in perspective try playing the guitar or piano with your right hand as your left and your left hand as your right to the level you would if you were playing normally. He could also sing at the same time while playing complex drum fills and did a lot of intricate jazzy fills which often go unnoticed. If anyone ever quips at Ringo being a brilliant drummer, just get them to watch live performances of the Beatles playing 'Long Tall Sally' live, which incidentally, they recorded for the album in 1 TAKE!

"Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" is a crazy song, isn't it? Fun Fact: All of the lyrics for that song came from an old circus poster John Lennon found somewhere and bought (there was a picture from 1967 of John Lennon pointing to that poster; a Google image search may bring it up)
That "circus fairground organ" bit in the middle was basically John Lennon playing 'oom-pah' chords on one organ and the Beatles' producer George Martin just playing chromatic runs up and down on another organ. For the bit at the end, not only was it the two of them on organs again, but they added a track of tape loops that were thrown around, scratched (and even dipped into a bottle of Coke) before being stitched together, which is why it sounds so weird.

That's the first I've heard about the tape loops being dipped in coke. From my understanding they cut up the tapes, threw the cuts up in the air, then taped them back together as they found them, so some were playing forwards and some were playing backwards and the order was completely random. John Lennon said to George Martin, "I want to smell the sawdust", referring to the sawdust that would be put down to soak up the circus animals' messes. Together they did a pretty good job of it.

They're my 2 favourite bands, but I must say I get much more of an intimate connection with the Beach Boys.I think its because they were so close vocally as they were a family and grew up around the piano, they produced their own music, they were able to create a sound that was like something heavenly or from another world. The Beatles on the other hand were 4 different people pulling in 4 different directions and didnt produce their own music, so I dont get the same connection with them. I never feel like its a group experience. Its more like im listening to a Lennon song, a McCartney song, a Harrison song or a Starr song, depending on who has lead vocal. At 13:26, the chaotic circus music you described as a "romantic panic attack" - It's very interesting how they did that in the studio. Back then they recorded everything on tape, so they played some Calliope-like music on an organ, and they cut the tape, throw in around, and splice it together random order, and that makes the chaotic effect. "In a 1968 interview, producer George Martin recalled that he achieved this "by playing the Hammond organ myself and speeding it up". In addition to the Hammond organ, an attempt was made to find a 19th-century steam organ for hire in London, to enhance the carnival atmosphere effect, but to no avail. After a great deal of unsuccessful experimentation, Martin instructed recording engineer Geoff Emerick to chop the tape into pieces with scissors, throw them up in the air, and re-assemble them at random."

There are lots of albums that i love, but my three albums of popular music are after Sgt Pepper: Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE, it was such an ambitious work, a journey across America, a follow up to Pet Sounds, that he failed to complete at the time and which turned out to be a thorn in his side for decades and then surprisingly he with the help of his solo band completed it and recorded it beautifully.
The last one is Yes "Close to the Edge" not as universally loved within popular music as the Beatles or Brian's work but while many may focus on the fancy playing I think it has a real and inspired heart.

It’s about two self centered parents (how could she do this to ME), who despite showering their daughter with material things, were never there for her emotionally.

I've been listening to this album since I was three (back in the 1970s!), and it was my favorite album growing up. I also bought it in the 1990s for my first girlfriend. (Does this make me sound really old? I don't feel that old.) By the way, some tidbits: This album was recorded using only four tracks in the studio. Sometimes you'll hear an instrument cut out to make room for another. The tuning up from the beginning was taken from the orchestra tuning up for the last song, "A Day in the Life." Lucy in the Sky features a unique doubletracking technique: Lennon's voice is doubled with George's guitar, both fusing into almost one sound. (By the way, have you ever heard Rascal Flatt's "I'm Movin' On"? Same notes!) "She's Leaving Home" did indeed feature a harp, which was played by Sheila Bromberg, the first female musician to appear on a Beatles record. (Paul and John's voices in the choruses are supposed to represent the mother and father's voices respectively.) "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" was based on an old circus poster Lennon had bought and was the end of Side A of the record. McCartney wrote "When I'm Sixty Four" when he was 14. "A Day in the Life" features some really good use of stereo, with Lennon's voice traveling from right to left in the first verse and his “aaaaaah” in the middle going from right to left to right again for one of those perfect moments in music. This was a landmark album for the Beatles when it came to stereo because before this album, they primarily recorded with mono in mind, and stereo mixes were made (often poorly) as an afterthought. This album, though originally mixed in mono, had a stereo mix made that was profound and was created with a diligent effort that would continue throughout the remainder of their albums. One final thought: the closest album the Beatles did to this one, in my opinion, was Abbey Road. I would love to hear your thoughts on that one too. Congrats on the hit video! I suspect you'll get tens of thousands of views for this one eventually.

It's fun to watch someone hear these songs that have meant so much to us older folks feel the impact of what this band achieved. It actually makes me tear up-- because it reminds me of my first experiences hearing the Beatles music, and how special it was at the time. Music enthusiasts like me and my friends worry that the appreciation for this work will get lost as years fade.
Anyway-- ramblings of an old guy-- by the way-- that strange sound you hear at the end of the album was what y'all call an Easter egg. On a record, when the needle gets to the middle, it has nowhere else to go. The band put that bit of sound on the runout groove. Instead of an endless click like normal records, this one repeats that bit of noise in the runout groove.
There's also a dog whistle buried in that final cord of A Day In The Life-- they put in a sound only your pet could hear.
The album was the first produced where the band used the studio as an instrument. They included sound loops and unusual sounds because they had decided to stop touring. Not having to worry about reproducing the songs on a stage (today they'd just add digital cues to pre-recorded material-- no biggie). Back in 1967, performing these songs on stage with string arrangements and sound effects was an impossibility. It liberated them to write more complex arrangements and experiment. Well, they also did a fair bit of drug experimentation, too.
The stories behind these songs and where they came from is as interesting as the songs themselves. There is a lot written and absorbed by us fanatics. Though in truth, some of these stories have changed over the years. Even Paul McCartney has changed his story about some of them over time. Sometimes the decisions are intentional. Sometimes they came at they came at the suggestion of their producer George Martin, other times-- they were playing around and thought something sounded cool. Thanks for doing this.

Jimi Hendrix is part of the aura around Sgt. Pepper's. Three days after the album was released in 1967 he covered the title song at London's Saville Theater in front of Paul and George.
"It’s still obviously a shining memory for me, because I admired him so much anyway, he was so accomplished. To think that that album had meant so much to him as to actually do it by the Sunday night, three days after the release. He must have been so into it, because normally it might take a day for rehearsal and then you might wonder whether you’d put it in, but he just opened with it." -- Paul McCartney

Good evening, Crystal! How are you? Since this is a Throwback Thursday I wanted to go back to your first music reaction video. This was it. It’s a bit surreal to watch it now, but in the most delightful way.
I was watching your boyfriend’s art videos last night and he’s amazing. Really enjoyed it. I’m not sure if you are familiar with Stuart Sutcliffe, but he was in The Beatles for a brief period of time. He was really an artist and a painter who fell in love with a German girl, Astrid. They likely would have gotten married, but Stu died tragically at 22 from a brain hemorrhage.
A year or so before, he was jumped by some guys who beat him up and kicked him repeatedly in the head. John was the first one to come to his defense and was best friends with him. Stu was bleeding from his ears and nose, but refused to see a doctor until months later.
Had he lived, he likely would have designed album covers. He’s the one who came up with the name Beatles. He suggested it to John on the one year anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death as an homage to The Crickets his band. Stu also was a film buff who loved Marlon Brando and he’s the one who Astrid gave the first Beatles haircut. It really was a hairstyle the German art students were wearing.
I thought you might like that story. 😊 PS Stu is actually on the “Sgt. Pepper” album cover, too.

That bit at the tail end is what we call 'the locked groove". Only the British version of the album, once that last piano chord dies out completely, you might here was sounds like a few seconds of hiss. This comes in the section where the needle is already rolling off towards the label and that his is actually a piece of "music" for dogs! It's a tone that's so high up the scale, only dogs can hear it. It was Paul's idea to put that on the record specifically for his sheepdog, Martha ("Martha, My Dear").
Immediately after that tone, you hear that gibberish at the end which ends in the locked groove that completely surrounds the label on the record. It only runs about 2 seconds which is why it keeps repeating forever if you choose never to take the needle from the record. It was randomly put together by taking various bits of tape the recorded and, like with the circus music at the end of Mr. Kite, they'd cut the tape into little pieces and just throw them into the aiir and, after picking them all up, splice them all back together randomly Those two final bits were never included on the American version of the album.

Their producer George Martin wrote an entire book about making this album and other stories about working with the band. It wasn't really a concept album since only the first 2 songs and the reprise refer to it, as John said later his songs had nothing to do with it.
He wasn't as fluent musically as Paul was, he tell George he wanted to sound like he's singing from a mountain top for 'Tomorrow Never Knows' or with 'Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite' he wanted to smell the sawdust. This gave free reign to the engineers and producer to be imaginative which is why his songs stand out for me. Notice at the end of 'Good Morning Good Morning' how the rooster crowing merges with the guitar note, also how each animal is being chased by another animal that was bigger. That's Lennon. He also supplied Paul with lines such as 'It couldn't get no worse' in 'Getting Better'.
Harrison's 1st contribution 'Only a Northern Song' was rejected by Martin so he came back with the Indian number. 'Northern Song' ended up on the "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack album.
This album was considered the soundtrack to 'The Summer of Love' which was 1967, everyone was playing it.
Other albums you may wish to check out: from 1969 "Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire" by The Kinks, much more of a concept album than "Sgt. Pepper's".

    Hi Crystal
Fellow songwriter and musician/music lover here.
I am a huge Beatles fan and I can't remember a time when I haven't heard these songs playing on the radio and home hi-fi system/CD player. I personally have heard these songs hundreds of times and it's amazing to me how fresh and evergreen the Beatles songs remain.
Watching/listening to you hear them with fresh ears actually brought tears to my eyes.
Lennon/McCartney (and later Harrison) were genius songwriters and with their producer George Martin were able to interpret and masterfully perform these timeless masterpieces.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful thoughts on experiencing them for the first time.
White Album (The Beatles) is worlds away from Pepper, but the Beatles being the Beatles refused to rest on their laurels and re-invented themselves once again. Magical Mystery Tour kind of bridges the gap between Pepper and White Album, showing the evolution and growth that the lads acquired in that very short amount of time between albums.
As White Album is a double album, it's a bit much to digest in one sitting and for me was an acquired taste. It is a little "something for everyone" and I feel that the Beatles were never afraid of trying something new and taking risks.
The Beatles wrote the bulk of the White Album while on a rare respite while in India studying Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. John and Paul were such prolific songwriters that it seems they spent most of their time writing songs when they weren't meditating. Supposedly they were drug and alcohol free during this time and I feel it reflects in the change in tone from Pepper and MMT.
Blackbird is simple yet beautiful and reflects Paul's masterful songwriting and lets the song shine through with a stripped down arrangement of acoustic guitar/vocal. No drums were needed as the only percussion is the tapping of Paul's feet.
I just randomly clicked on your video and it took me on a magical mystery tour of hearing SPLHCB as if for the first time.
I look forward to listening to some of your other reviews.
    Thanks!
    Vince Boston

It’s good to see the enthusiasm for the music I was into in my teens. I heard my first Beatles song in early 80s. . Magical Mystery tour. I was about 10? What I liked was the train went from one side of the headphones 🎧 to the other and I thought that was cool.. and I began listening to any Beatles music I could.. all day all
    The time Lol 😂

@@manny4552 It's great to see young people appreciate this & the other albums by the Beatles. Imagine how us old timers felt, when it seemed like every month a new Beatles album would come out. And they were so different than any music that had come before. I recommend getting The Beatles Ultimate Collection app for your phone, as it has all their albums, and some extra stuff.

Excellent video. Great seeing your reaction and first-time deconstruction of this legendary album. I'm a massive Beatles nerd so this was right up my bowling alley. Don't forget that 'Magical Mystery Tour' is the album that is between Sgt Pepper and The White Album (it's considered a movie soundtrack technically so it's often ignored, but Hard Day's Night was also a soundtrack but is considered one of the official albums for some reason) so please react to that. Would be great hearing your thoughts. Revolver, Sgt Pepper, and Magical Mystery Tour is the Beatles psychedelic trilogy in a way.

@@CrystalShannon4 Too kind. I write for a magazine in the UK where I review movies, video games, and music as well as writing essays on culture and things I'm passionate about. I've written a bunch of Beatles album retrospectives where I go into detail about the historical context of the album, how it was made, what inspired the songs, etc that might interest you, as someone who knows about the technical/musical side of song-making, to have the lore of the The Beatles and their music. My last piece I wrote was a lyrical deconstruction of their song 'I Am The Walrus' (a song that is on Magical Mystery Tour btw) which you might want to check out after reacting to the album it's on. Just look up 'Beatles Vulturehound Anniversary' on google and you'll see all of my Beatles album pieces (also the Walrus essay is called 'I Am The Walrus: Down The Rabbit Hole'). Let me know what you think!

She's Leaving Home has an amazing coincidence. Paul McCartney actually met the girl the song was about 4 years before. He picked her as the winner of a dance contest: ruclips.net/video/Ug0QMU3LpJ4/видео.html

Wonderful reaction. And it’s your reaction, you can stop it and talk as often you want 😁

Thank you so much! The stopping is more so to conform to RUclips regulations! If it were up to me, I would upload the entire album without cutting it up!

@@CrystalShannon4 Plus you’re a musician and have some extra knowledge and that causes you to want to point out stuff :). It’s a fresh way to react. Be prepared, The White Album may blow your mind! :) It did me. It is the most eclectic collection of music I’ve ever heard all from one band on one album. NOTHING sounds alike.

I’ve been a fan of the Beatles since 1964 when they exploded on our Pop music scene. Your review was sensitive, insightful, wonderfully technical. And a thorough joy to watch. Pardon me while I go subscribe.
