    Totally agree. My usual street apertures run from f5.6 - f11. I Jack it up to wide open only when a particular scene calls for it, usually a closeup of some sort, rarely ever a medium to long distance shot.

    Love to hear a photographer mention Magnum photographers, I feel like it isn’t mentioned/looked at a lot.Good to see someone is looking at the greats and seeing what worked extremely well for them to influence your photography Mike! Keep Up The Good Work! (One of favourite photographers is Robert Frank)

    28mm is also a good in between focal length for street photography, somewhat out of fashion nowadays as far as primes go for some reason.

    That portrait one is kinda true with me but I just really like vertical photos. In saying that with insta I reaaaaly love doing the 3 stack landscape in the 4x5 ratio so lately I have been keeping my eye out for landscape shots! Oh yeah and shooting at F1.8 is an issue for me to but I do catch myself and bump it to f4-5.6 for specific shots. Good advice!

    • @MikeChudley
      @MikeChudley  2 года назад +1

      Yeaah I get it man, it’s actually not a huge issue but just something to remember, probably more personally my reminder 😂

    The portrait vs. landscape situation has flipped with the advent of the smartphone camera. I remember a time when, with “35 mm” cameras, film or digital, it was difficult to convince people to rotate the camera 90 degrees even when the subject required it.

    As for the portrait vs landscape mode, there are different opinions on this. And unless you don’t have a 60MP Leica or Sony … you have to think about cropping later on … so shoot what’s best … my opinion … it’s not about Insta only

    I’m waiting on two prime lenses to come in the mail for my m50 mark II the sigma f1.4 16mm and the sigma f1.4 30mm. I plan on taking both with me on the street to do some photography I believe using prime lenses are best for street photography and plan on eventually getting the sigma f1.4 56mm in the future

    Tips yes but rules, no. Too many ppl get told they have to shoot wide angle or close up etc. Photography and art in general should never stand still and should always be evolving. Photographers should be able to shoot what they want with whatever lens they want.
    85mm is my preferred lens as I like shooting interesting subjects in and around the streets. Just a different style I guess. Photography/ art shouldn't be there to be copied.
    FYI I still do absolutely love 28mm, 35mm etc photos but it just doesn't suit my vision tis all. And that's what it should be about. Enjoying the process and making the type of photos you personally want to make.
    Just my thoughts 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @MikeChudley
      @MikeChudley  2 года назад +1

      I do agree with your point. Your point is definitely valid enough to shoot at 85mm haha.
      However my point is for beginners wanting to improve. Some people have never tried 24mm and it shows, they take same instagram “bangers” everyone else takes. Because if I’m honest, I think it’s harder to get a good image on a 24/35mm lens than it is with 85mm.
      Whereas opening our eyes to the greats of street photography and the people who paved the way could really help everyone.
      Thanks for this comment, I appreciate it.

      @@MikeChudley I think it's a genuinely interesting discussion and like I say, I do absolutely love wider focal lengths. I mean the vast majority of my ever growing photography book collection are mainly wider lenses. For me personally I have come across from wildlife where it is more subject based and I think I have got into that frame of mind with my street to. Maybe I'll expand and progress in time but at the moment I'm happy.
      I do agree wider focal lengths can be more difficult to work with (maybe subconciously that's why I haven't taken to it) but then again it can also be able to sneak a photo with a wider lens because more often than not you'll get more in focus. 85mm (especially at wide apertures and with a slow focusing camera) can be harder as you're having to possible wait an extra couple of seconds to get the subject in focus. If you miss, photo ruined.
      Like I say, interesting discussion for sure.
