Awesome! That's the cover of the Wellerman sea shanty we all bagpipers are waiting for! Thanks for sending me the sheet music! Cheers from Kiel, Germany
Great video, and thank you for transcribing the music. I've been piping for 50 years, and I say, you hide the effort of playing this instrument very well. I knew the C and F notes were flattened, which you verified in the note on the sheet music. And thank for providing the story behind the song.
Gday- Just threw down the gauntlet to a mate of mine learning pipes... sent him the link. And I have downloaded the score- thank you so much appreciated. I'm an organist (pipe) not a piper... but I'm interested in playing occasional Scottish pieces as I'm Scots descent and bagpipes give me goosebumps every time. I understood the principle behind repeated notes but didn't know the finer detail- I do now. Love your trio video idea... brilliant. More please.
Julianne, very good Performance! Thank youfor the Sheet music. IT Took Just half an hour to Play IT in the PC. Tomorrow will do IT on my Pipes. Give us more of that... Manfred, Cologne, Germany
Thanks Julianne for your help and providing such decent music. Glad about your comment of how to being able to play minor with the bagpipes. Wish you all the best!
My son is a beginner bagpiper and he loves this! He started practicing while still in his pijamas! I guess we will be hearing this all day 😂 thank you for the amazing cover!
Glad I could provide some inspiration for kids (or anyone for that matter) to practice. Now if I could just get my kids to change out of their pajamas for the day...that’s one of the results of lockdown Virtual Everything. PJs all day every day. Good luck!
Great job! And thanks a lot for sharing the sheet music! What a fascinating musical instrument we play - compatible with different kinds of music of various cultures and genres ...
Hi Julianne, thanks a lot for your prompt reply to my email and sending me the sheet music. I´m really happy and now beginning to learn playing this tune. Greetings from Germany :-)
Hello Julianne Great song played with the bagpipe. Is it possible to become the notes from Wellermann Song for play with bagpipe? Thank you for your answer. Roman Odermatt
Sea Shanty Tik tok meets Piping RUclips! This is brilliant! What key is the chanter? Love this! Wellerman certainly has been the tune of Covid in more ways than one!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks! The chanter I am playing in the vid is a standard Highland Bagpipe chanter. It plays in *approximate* B-flat major key. I have flattened the C and F with tape on the holes to play this song in a minor key.
Definitely and thank you for the kind words. In the description of the video you will find a link to a Google doc of the sheet music. You can download the sheet music from there. If it doesn’t work for you post another comment here and I will give you my email so we can connect that way.
To play this tune in this key, some of the notes of the standard great Highland bagpipe chanter must be flatted. There are different ways to do this, however, this is the easiest way for me. Take some electrical tape and put it on the very top of the F and C holes of the chanter. There are many tutorials to show you how to do this.
Thank you for your kind words. I am one of the Pipe Sergeants for New York University Pipes and Drums, what the band does not have a RUclips channel- yet!
Then I am glad that the RUclips algorithm brought you to this video. Email me brandgraphics@aol.com and I will send you the sheet music. Oh and it’s free.
Great playing! My son sent me the link to this, he wants me to play it at his son's wedding in August (My Grandson) I don't suppose you could send me the sheet music?
That’s a very unique pipe tune for a wedding, to be certain. Thank you for your kind words regarding my playing. I put a google doc link in the video description that goes to a PDF of the sheet music. If that doesn’t work for you for you, I can send via email. Let me know either way here in the comments.
@@juliannebrown Thanks for the sheet music very much appreciated. My son sms'd me last night asking me to check out "Wellerman" I'd had a few tranquilisers (Nippy sweeties) I thought the song was OK and then I saw a version with the pipes. (Knock out!) My son phoned today and said he didn't know it could be played on the pipes. Initially he wanted me to sing the Bass part and my wife and granddaughter the melody, and another grandson the bodhran. We'll work it out. Again thank you so much, And I really appreciate your piping. Cheers from sunny Oztralia.
Hi! Nicely played! I am looking for the sheet music, I tried to download it from the link in the description but it doesnt work. Any chance you can send it to me?
Thank you! You ears picked up something different about the bass sound, but it wasn’t what you thought. It is two tracks of a bass drone, one of them is an octave below the natural pitch layered in the mix.
Good friend, there is a Google Drive link in the description; you can download it for free from there. Just please pay the favor forward. You’re welcome and good luck!
Thank you for your kind words. In the video description there is a Google doc link to download the sheet music. It’s free. Reply back to me here if the link is not working.

Hello from the french Basque Country (Bayonne). Very nice arrangement Bravo ! Our history is also full of sailors going to fish the whales far from their family in past centuries. We are a little pipeband and that would be great to play this song . Would you mind if you could send us the sheet music ? Thanks a lot !
Thank you and I appreciate your kind words. The whaling history of the song would be a meaningful connection for your band then. I am not a scholar of these things, but I speak from what I know. To me, the words of the song describe a whaling vessel which ropes a live 'right' (Wright) whale), which then pulls the ship around the ocean endlessly. Because the captain will not cut the whale loose, the ship must submit to being controlled by the whale with no finite end to the ship's mission. Only the suspension of waiting and hoping. To me, the chorus seems to speak of wishing the whaling company(The Wellerman) will 'soon' bring the sailors some comfort by way of sugar and tea and rum and wishing the whole affair was finished so they could take their leave and go. To me it is an allegory of the pandemic for many people, soldiering on without freedom or control in one's life, awaiting comfort supplies, rescue and a resolution to a dire situation. I will send the music to you via email from brandgraphics@aol.com.
J'adore !!!
All hail the YT algorithm, without which I wouldn't have found this video. Great pipes too!!
let's take a moment to appreciate a video with over 200 likes and no dislikes that has been up for several months..
Its a good video what can I say. I must leave a like
I added a like to hopefully counter the few dislikes
Definitely sounds good on bagpipes.
Not sure if it would have been the most common instrument at sea or not but definitely works
This is so amazing! Just downloaded the music so my husband can take to pipe band practice tonight. Thanks for your generosity in sharing!
