    Just a quick note: since the Golems have a crit ratio of 250%, and it only triggers at 40% health or below, it means at 40% health, they'll do exactly the same amount of damage as they would at 100%. At 20% health, this goes already down to 50%, so it deteriorates very quickly.

    • @RolandTemplar
      @RolandTemplar 5 лет назад +9

      For that, dragons are most cost effective

    • @tinchosabala
      @tinchosabala 5 лет назад +12

      So, at 40% percent health they are more effective than at 50%, for example?

    • @Feawfeaw
      @Feawfeaw 5 лет назад +33

      Yes, that's correct. At 40% health they act as if they have 100% health. So at 41%, they're the weakest, before dipping to 40% and below. At 16% and below, they will be weaker than at 41%, though.

    But one thing to note is the AI is also unhindered by Fog of War. They can attack what they can't see (I tested it by surrounding enemy archers in walls, and they still shot me. I couldn't do it in the reverse). Also, if you run into an enemy in Fog of War, your unit's turn is eliminated right there. Really frustrating. Xo

      Oddly enough I still manage to surprise certain units during the campaign. My guess is they account of units obscured by forests and/or mountains but not walls? I'm still uncertain on that end. However, this kind of accidental ambushing was what gave me the upper hand defeating Greenfinger for the first time.

    @8:08 The squares are really more brown than red, and that’s not what they mean. Brown squares are squares that a unit can move onto, but cannot attack. If they can attack after moving, then they can attack *from* brown squares, but they cannot attack any enemy that’s on a brown square. This never comes up in play, because you cannot move onto a square occupied by another unit, but that’s what the brown means. And to prove this, just look at Wagons. All their movement squares are brown, because they have no attacks and thus are unable to attack the squares in their movement range.

    In some good news, the latest patch is adding in an option to show damage range on the combat prediction instead of just the average, so you'll know exactly what you're in for.
    Also, what's your source on mountain defence bonuses working like that? I think it's more like Advance Wars, where terrain defence scales with unit health - so a unit with 10HP is getting 40% defense, but a unit with 5HP is only getting 20%, 2HP is getting 8%, ect. I think this applies to all terrain defence, it's just most noticeable with mountains, since they have such a large defence value with falls off very noticeably with the scaling.

  • @Eevulpix
    @Eevulpix 5 лет назад +18

    The luck value is a bit more complex than that
    It scales with hp, so a 50% hp unit will have +/- 2.5%
    It *also* scales with critical hit multipliers, so a cavalier unit for example will do +/- 7.5% on a full hp crit, since the critical multiplier is 1.5x

    • @CoyoteXLI
      @CoyoteXLI 5 лет назад +4

      There's also the fact that units have 100hp not 10 which leads to rounding oddities

    From my experiences, dogs have 1 extra tile of vision (most land units have 2 whereas dogs have 3) and they function like an FE unit with a torch IF they are on a mountain, so I'm not certain about your second point. Aside from that though, this is some rather nice info to have, though I'd point out that at least through act 3 you can get by almost every chapter (S rank included) without relying heavily on wagons. The only real exceptions iirc are the civilian evacuation in the first chapter and fleeing from Sigrid at the end of act 3 (the wagon lets you get through SO much faster in that one)

  • @koxacbka
    @koxacbka 5 лет назад +5

    1) go advanced option and just turn indication on. the game do tell you about varied damage. just hides it by default
    also I may be wrong but I think they do tell you what you can put in a wagon in a mission where it's introduced

  • @artstsym
    @artstsym 7 месяцев назад +1

    Much like Advance Wars, terrain defense is proportional to your unit's HP (to stop turtling, as mentioned). Low health units just don't get that much benefit from terrain, and should either be retreated or used in the worst terrain space of a wall defense, to ensure that they're still eating an attack that would massacre a healthier unit.

  • @MidniteCathedral
    @MidniteCathedral 5 лет назад +4

    The defense bonus reduction for weak units is in line with Advance Wars 1/2/DS. In Advance Wars, a unit's terrain defense bonus was equal to (stars * HP), so a 10 HP unit would get 40% defense from the stars, but a 1 HP unit would only get a 4% bonus. I'll have to create a custom map to test out whether it scales the same way in Wargroove. (I don't know how this applies in DoR since the effects of terrain defense were changed a bit there.)

  • @RolandDrummer77
    @RolandDrummer77 5 лет назад

    Some things I noticed:
    1)There's a setting in the game that displays attack damage range instead, so it can be correctly displayed in game.
    2) Defense is based on percent of current hp (as you noted), but not total hp. So, in the mountain example you used, 40% of 100hp is 40, but 40% of 30hp is only 12. As far as I can tell the game scales this correctly...I could be wrong? 15% of 30hp would only be 4.5...I'm fairly certain mountains provide more defense than that.
    Great video overall!

    Quick side thing since you brought up wagons:
    Barges and Balloons can carry pretty much any ground-based unit in the game, and can also carry 2 units instead of just 1. Though to compensate they don't have nearly as much travel power. Great vid!

    Ok so if you have a squishy unit near your commander, just move them up together but make SURE the commander is in a less advantageous terrain. The units will go for your commander and ignore your squishy archer standing right next to him/her if they can possibly get to your commander.
    But say your archer and commander are on a road; the enemy will slaughter your poor archer first unless they really REALLY think they can KO your commander that turn.

    How is it in handheld? I had AW and AW on GBA, and really enjoyed them. I was hoping they'd get a modern update, like fire emblem as they were essentially the same game in a lot of ways (obviously they are different, but they were also similar in a lot of ways, too) when I heard my prayers were answered in the form of wargroove, I expected to se a modern take on the formula, but instead I'm met with a game that actually looks like Advance Wars, ha ha. I'm not sure how I feel about it.
    If it is good in handheld, reckon I will get for switch. I have the option to buy this on PC as well, but it does feel like this is a game that is best on the switch TBH, I mean these more simple games lend themselves to the handheld mode quite well. Usually I play old side scrolling style games on my switch like rayman and iconoclasts (was playing gris as well, but I had to start playing that on my monitor to get the most from it... such an amazing experience)
    This games on sale anyway right now on nintendo, so probably worth me getting it. I do love this style of game, and I did hammer AW and AW 2 (even replayed them on DS as well) so probs a good investment for me.
    does it have local multiplayer?

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 4 года назад

      It's fantastic on handheld. I use the zoomed out far away camera, which may make it unreadable for those with bad eyesight, but it's perfectly fine to me, not too small, and you can see more of the battlefield that way. But there is a zoomed in view for those who need it
      It lends itself to handheld I think, because you can just do a mission and then turn it off. Little chunks of gameplay.

    Just a quick one for your tip number 1.
    I was under the impression that the attack damage has a variance of the -5% to +5% meaning it can full anywhere on that spectrum not one or the other.
    Difference being is you need 96% to kill an enemy and your attack is saying 100.
    With my view there is only a 10% chance of not killing the enemy as -4% still kills and anything higher.
    But with saying its one of the other means its a 50-50

      It’s not +-5% absolute. It’s +-5% of the damage you were doing. So if you had an attack that did 100% damage, it would actually do 95-105%, but if you had an attack that did only 40%, it would actually do 38-42%.

    I would like to know the attack shape. In advance wars I'm used to seeing the unit's movement squares and the units attack squares. But in Wargroove you just get it all at the same time and some attack squares only apply once a unit moved closer to the target. It's a huge mess in my opinion.
    Just what the heck does the shape look like?
    ...also sometimes they can't shoot 3 squares ahead either. It seems really random to me.... most of the time the Archers end up running at the enemy and wacking them in the face. And ofcourse they get wacked back. It's really stupid xD
    ....actually this might be because of the rain..... but there should still be a UI that tells me exactly what archers can and can't do. It's really not well done.

      I'm pretty sure archers always have a radius of 3 as range (and weather just adds or subtracts a layer), though the (crit) shape could've been highlighted or something.
      I kind of agree though, the UI doesn't work as well with archers as it does with the siege weapons (because they can't move and attack)

      Archers can shoot 3 squares distance from where they stand. Diagonal squares do not count. If your opponent is at a diagonal to you, it will seem less range. Its kinda difficult to exain, but just try counting the squares, that's what I do.

      I think the game explains well enough... Archers have 3 range at default. If you start counting at 0 where your archer is standing, then count 3 tiles away (horizontally/vertically, NOT diagonally), and those are the spaces you can hit. If it's raining, all ranged units have their range decreased by a certain amount. The campaign explains this range decrease in one of the early missions, but I would basically consider Archers useless in the rain. The shape of the archer's attack is a circle made up of squares.
      Also, if you select an archer, you can see how far they can move (tiles with diagonal lines), and how far they can shoot (tiles with borders). Instead of selecting the archer, and then selecting the enemy, you should select the archer, select the space you want it to move to, and then select attack, and attack the enemy unit you want to hit. If you can't, then you're out of range. That way, the game won't move you into an sub-optimal position.

      To address the last bit, if you click your archer, tell them to attack an enemy, and they wind up moving, it's because the game read that you were moving the archer because your cursor has the archer moving. If you need to attack without moving, you need to make sure there's no arrow showing where they would move to on screen, or... just simply click the same space they're standing in and select attack, then select your target so there's no risk of this. Game tells you to do it this way in 1-3 when you're told about how archers' crit works.
      Hope that reduces the number of times your archers whack people with arrows instead of shooting them from afar.

      Pay attention to the weather, it can reduce the range of many unit, both at range and moving range

    One thing i wish the game would have told me, is that you can only get aboard boats when they are on a beach. I figured it out after a while, but the first times i tried to use it, i was confused as why they wouldn't let me in, even tho i was standing next to them.

    My favorite nostalgia feature is no in mission saving, and that if you lose after 16 turns to some bullshit you get to just lose an hour of gameplay. That shit might have been fine in 2006 but it's 2019 now.
