i have it on good authority that the pine trees original drawings were, to quote: "tiny"
Can't believe how much you guys are churning out lately...this is a real treat. Hewlett is a total genius. Absolutely inspiring. I'm always inspired by his command of perspective as well. Everything is successfully cartooned...unbelievable. I see some Jack Davis in this work...maybe even some of Norman Rockwell's pencil studies. Could be reaching...regardless...the dude is a king of cartoons. Thanks so much for highlighting this book. Essential.
I'm from the UK and came across Jamie Hewlett for the first time in 2000ad on a strip called Hewligans Haircut Wich I can highly recommend. The art show a few years back was the at the Saachi gallery and the pine trees were a good size (not small as suggested). Thanks guys for this and all your videos. Jamie Hewlett and the kayfabe channe,l bloody ace!!
I see a lot of Ralph Steadman at 10:40. He was a big influence in Britain.
Man, I love it when you guys feature these giant art books....another kick-ass video!
@13:55 I still have my pair of white Gorillaz converse with that right-hand page illustration on them from years ago :)
I see a tiny bit of Ronald Searle in his work too
I bought this book about a year ago. Mine has a solid red Front Cover with a portrait. The Front Cover on your copy is the Back Cover on mine, with a "works from the last 25 years" banner added to it.. One of my former bosses Andy Knight worked on the animated transition bits in the live-action TANK GIRL film. Alongside Mike Smith of the COLOSSAL Pictures studio.
Some of my favorite comics artists have a bit of Hewlett to them. Mahfood, WJC (both with work under their belt for Tank Girl). You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate his stuff, but i believe many artists do have him in high regard. I always imagine the guy to have the personality of Dan Ashcroft from the tv show Nathan Barley.
Agreed. I see some Hewlett in each of those dudes. Great call!
This book is awesome! Jamie Hewlett is such a huge influence for me, it's amazing to see how much of what he does is unknown. Thanks for this video!
every other page I would stop and think; this is so beautiful
Jack Davis Jack Davis Jack Davis! Jamie definitely loves Jack! :)
YES! Of course!!!
Davis was awesome
That was such a good look through guys amazing books I need that cream of tank girl one for sure
Really digging these videos.Glad I found the channel.
Great episode! Love Jamie's work
I've had this book on my list since it came out. Keep waiting to finally justify the cost. So beautiful.
Hewlett is a gift
8:50 Celebrity Harvest
Great video. That Taschen book had me drooling
I have it. The best art book I have ever bought!
That centrefold picture at 26:45 has sweets stuck to it. My friend won that in a competition it looks amazing in the flesh.
Not sure if any of it is in that book but I’m a big fan of all the album art he did for the band Senseless Things in the early 90s.
Oooh... I want to check out that first one!
Love Hewlett one of my favorite living artists
I see Jack Davis influence in some of the inkwork as well. But I'm curious about the "no dogfighting" edict; Enemy Ace did it so well, and before that those Kurtzman edited air war stories. What was the problem?
Enemy Ace broke the rule and kept it broke. The idea was that planes in the sky looked too static and boring.
@@CartoonistKayfabe Thanks. I still don't entirely get it. It sounds like the view of someone that doesn't think about the visual possibilities of the medium.
@@CartoonistKayfabe am get its
Lesson learned with that coloring!
I'm so proud of my copy of Hewligan's Haircut!
I first saw Jamie's work when he did a Mural in Liberty's nightclub in the town he went to college in Worthing. Again unfortunately as the nightclub did well they extended out knocking down that very wall, so it no longer exists.
I went straight out and bought this!
The fact that Jamie actually drew Murdoc Niccals trying to touch Tank Girl's B***'s wa just some AMAZING detail!
i have all the face magazines with the freebies in
Saludos, buen vid.
Got this and signed by the man himself ... HE WAS SO FUCKING AWESOME !!!
🤘😬🤘 😶🌫🙌🙌💯
Where can I find the monochromatic animation from 12:07 ?
11:00 and 11:37 (for reference use)
some shane glines sensibilities
Tank Girl Movie? (Robbie)
Great ep guys!! Read More Hewlett!!
Art books shouldn't run the art over two pages., the fold and stitching just spoil it
Seems familiar
Added to the shopping cart... my wallet doesn’t thank you!
Why are murdocs eyes so wide wtf
he not an animator.
He is! He was one of the animators on the first few Gorillaz MVs, I believe. I’m not sure if he still animates on Gorillaz though.
