Hewlett studied graphic design in college, and you can really tell by seeing his mixed media approach to comics and illustrations. Fantastic artist and designer.

Listen, there's a lotta people that can draw, but when i look at stuff by Hewlett.... THAT MAN CAN DRAWWWWWW!!! it's so dialed in and he can go anywhere he wants with it an any time like the cover for tank girl 2 (at 18:09 ) it gives me some of that will elder chicken fat vibes.

Jamie Hewlett comes from my county here in uk. I totally recognised those sand dunes from my home town I. One of the photos in the book. J Hewlett is the best cartoonist to ever come out of Worthing

Amazing! I managed to buy the last copy of Deadline #1 in a supermarket when it came out. The back cover had the red boot drawing and it had been lying on the floor and had been walked over so the red boot has footprints. I have this artbook too. I remember meeting a very drunk Jamie Hewlett at a con years ago and he drew me a Tank Girl sketch. Thanks so much for doing this. Hewlett, Bond, Ewins, Kane... Deadline had some great artists.

absolutely do an episode about that Fireball compilation! I've been wanting a better look at that since your fantastic book-binding episode (which inspired me with some compilations of my own).

Check out Hewligans Haircut in 2000AD by Ptere Milligan and Hewlett - my first exposure to comics, 2000AD and Hewlett in 1990 - leading me on to everything ever since.

Love all the chinese wordings on that Jamie uses throughout. The one where Jim mentioned as Japanese is actually Traditional Chinese. If I recall correctly, that was collected in a Taiwan collection mixes with some marvel stories in black and white.

That punk diy zine "saimizdat/xerox" style of the 90s, very "of a time". The clipart with pasted up looking stuff is very punk and second-wave (as in 90s indie) punk design. It was all over the place but Hewlett is one of the best.

This is timely. Last week I was going through some unlabeled boxes of assorted magazines and comics I had forgotten about and found that among them was issues 3-8 of those "Manga" Tank Girl magazines (a couple Deadlines and a bunch of 2000 AD in there too). Great stuff. Can't remember what first got me into Tank Girl way back when, but it was probably when Dark Horse picked it up.

    Brilliant video as always.
Deadline, Hewlett and Bond changed my life and their work is still a huge influence on me. Great to see Tank Girl getting some love.
Oh, and that 'Tank Boot' shot is literally the back cover to DEADLINE #1.

I love Tank Girl she definitely had her own reign in the 90's. Ed! Idk if you have already, but since you did Tank Girl I was wondering if you would do the graphic novel Promethea by Alan Moore, J.H.williams, and Mick Gray! I would definitely love to see more female protagonists in comics, keep up the great work I appreciate your knowledge of comics and art on this channel.

I'm sure both The Odyssey and Apocalypse originated at DC as miniseries around the same time as the movie. The Manga magazine must have been printing them nearly concurrently but that's something that happens, I don't think the Marvel UK magazine sized Terminator title was all that far behind the original Dark Horse runs of the same material. The Manga mags were great, a full US issue at the larger page size in each plus Fireball, Milk and Cheese and a load of shorter Tank Girl and solo Booga pieces, not sure if those would have been original but from memory there wasn't any overlap between those and the three Titan collections of Deadline material, plus some punky mainly text pages interspersed. I was late teens reading that, catching the movie and borrowing an early collection of Deadline stuff in black and white, guessing that would have been one of the Penguin editions, snapped up the Titan stuff a few years later. Unfortunately I sold on the full run of those mags a few years ago, covers coming away from the first two and some coffee rings on one of them, but the girl who bought them sounded really enthused about them so hopefully they went to a good home. Certainly a prospect for a custom bind if I ever try to reacquire them.

Snagged the Pirate story off a $1 ragtag of Deadline under Darkhorse label. It was a kinetic era after the Cold War folded in 1990.
    Very energetic artwork.
