      Leonard Bernstein was a great conductor who inspired the musicians under his direction to many great performances. The love he had for Beethoven’s music is evident in this performance and inspired the entire orchestra to play with equal enthusiasm and love for this music. There are many great performances of Beethoven’s sixth symphony. Perhaps the very best besides this one is that of Herbert von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic in Deutsche Gramophone’s bicentennial release of all nine symphonies celebrating Beethoven’s birth.

      Indeed, this is the only Beethoven symphony which is "Program Music:". Each movement has a comment from Beethoven of what the music is all about. Though the depiction of the storm requires no explanation, for it's meaning is obvious to anyone that has been in a storm. The lighting and thunder, the sheets of water coming down depicted in the violins, the sound of the screaming wind in the piccolo, all the way to the end of the storm, with the distant thunder and the rumble in the basses, as the storm moves away and the reappearance of Sunshine from the passing clouds. What follows is a song of thanks for the end of the storm. Read the subtitles in Beethoven's score to know what Beethoven was illustrating in this wonderful symphony.

    I love Bernstein. Way back when, as an undergrad, I was studying the history of western classical music as my lower division fine art requirement. I loved the class. But I got more - much more - insight into classical music by watching Bernstein's "Young Peoples' Concerts" series while taking the class. Here I was a UC Santa Barbara undergrad getting more from Bernstein on the TV than from my (very good) professor. He was a great composer, musician and musical director. He was also an outstanding teacher.

    • @caltamino
      @caltamino Месяц назад

      I agree. Bernstein in his illustrious life did many things, including being a teacher in the immensely popular TV series that you refer to, which he recorded to "turn on" young people to love classical music. What is so admirable about Bernstein's life is the passion he dedicated to every project. This comes across in his conducting as well, in his facial expressions.
      Watching him conduct is both a lesson on how to conduct in the first place, but also what he is thinking and trying to express.
      When I was at Stanford, a graduate student in Computer Science, I played violin in the Stanford Orchestra. When our conductor Sandor Salgo retired, he was replaced by Mark Starr, who had connections to French musicians. When Jean Martinon came to the Bay Area to conduct the San Francisco Symphony, Starr invited him to come to Stanford and have a rehearsal with us. Starr prepared two pieces that we were going to rehearse with Martinon: Bizet's Symphony in C and a Martinon composition.
      It was a marvelous memorable experience for me, that changed my views on what an enormous difference a conductor makes. What Martinon achieved in a two hour rehearsal with us simply astonished me.
      He stopped us only a few times to explain what he wanted, Mostly he just said, follow me, and we did, like magic he got us to do the right phrasing, the right accents, the right dynamics, crescendos, decrescendos. We just sounded much much better than before.
      I realized then that conducting is magic, in which the conductor communicates with gestures. It is much much more than simply keeping time.

      Beethoven had to use some a lot of what Haydn did because he wasn't as talented as someone like Mozart. But beethoven absolutely has mozart to thank as almost half his ideas are from him. Beethoven even went as far as copying the mozarts melody note patterns (quarter, half step,etc) and simply changed the tempo and some of the key notes. An example of this is the melody in the 3rd movement of his 5th symphony. Beethoven wanted something of mozart in every work he did. If that's not thanking mozart, I don't know what is.

    La Sesta Sinfonia di Beethoven, sotto la direzione di Bernstein e grazie all'interpretazione magistrale della Filarmonica di Vienna, si trasforma in un vero e proprio viaggio attraverso i paesaggi emotivi e sensoriali che solo la musica di Beethoven può evocare.
    Bernstein, con la sua profonda sensibilità e intuizione artistica, non solo dirige, ma quasi dipinge con le note, delineando ogni passaggio con una precisione che tocca il cuore e l'anima. La sua capacità di infondere energia e vita in ogni movimento rende questa esecuzione un esempio sublime di come la musica possa essere potente e trasformativa. Ascoltare questa sinfonia eseguita con tanta passione ed eccellenza è un'esperienza che eleva lo spirito e arricchisce l'intelletto, rendendoci partecipi di un mondo di pura bellezza sonora.
    Un sentito ringraziamento al Maestro Bernstein per essere esistito e per aver condiviso il suo straordinario talento con il mondo.
