  • In this video we look at how three varieties of cherry trees( the Starkrimson, the Lapins and Stella) hold up to a down poor of rain.
This year I picked just over 3 kg of fruit off the Starkrimson, about half the crop of last year. Reason spoilage due to strong wind and rain, a bird getting under the net and possibly due to a heavy pruning, but the it’s grown back to the same size as last year.

It’s great tree Darryl, just doesn’t appear to stand up to the rain as well as the Lapins and Stella. I’ve eaten them fresh, stewed with a little sugar and today put some in a honey mead.

Those Stella look awesome. Cherries are the first fruit for us in the growing season and everyone looks forward to them.
Calcium sprays really help with the splitting and Lapins are always more split resistant than the others.

Thanks for sharing Oby. I didn’t know about calcium spray. It’s a really good point about being first fruit. With citrus I get fruit almost all year round, but my cherries, blueberries and raspberries are first of the deciduous trees/vines.. Followed by peaches, nectarines, apples and pears, quince and figs spanning over four months) I’ve only just planted apricots - so look forward to them in future.

Wow looks like the bees work so hard to pollinate all of the flowers, the bees at my place wr no where to be found i have to hand pollunate my small fruit trees and looks like my cherries not going to fruit well.

Yes, I’m fortunate to have two bee hives at the moment, but I’ve had up to five which is the limit for a domestic license here:), one hive is enough for me, but two gives me some redundancy if I was to loose a queen or hive in winter months…

Just a reminder, please look and find out your zone, depending on where you live you can only grow certain cherry trees/bushes

Hello I found your video on your cherry trees interesting. I have 7-10 year old starkcrimson, blackboy and lapin cherry trees which I get very little fruit from. Do you prune your trees for fruit? Your trees look like they have their natural shape. I can't work out why I'm not getting any fruit. Do you have any suggestions?

I feel like my Stella cherry tree is stunted. So I dug it back up and built up the soil a little bit. Gave it a fertilize and I'm hoping it will grow come next season. Any tips when starting out? It's very small and only a year old.

Hi Jazy, I’d feed it a few times a year, early spring and early summer, now. I’d look to get great crops from three years... mulch with a layer of cupboard and bush mulch ( because it’s cheap) each year. You can use some seasol when starting out if your soil is not too good... keep an eye out for cherry slugs in early summer eating your leaves... they can destroy growth... All the best. It’s great to get your own cherries. I’ve just started enjoying my Cherry Meade which I make from cherries and honey....:)

How did they go this year? I’m planning to get a Stella Cherry tree this winter!

Not so good this year Cameron. I pruned pretty hard to try and keep them low and spread out wide. Essentially I sacrificed this year…I’ll do a Summer prune and leave them alone during winter next year and see if they crop any better next year. This aside cherry trees would be high on my fruit tree list after lemon, orange and apple trees..

I have to admit I’m not a fan of fruit trees in pots. A lot of watering, feeding and less crops. Therefore probably better people to ask…if in Australia you could look at the Flemings miniature varieties. Bunnings and most nurseries have them or would know how to get them …

I m in Sydney and tried stella and lapins, both never fruited and not much growth. Also tried low chill cherry Minnie royal and royal Lee...no success either...

Sorry to hear that. I find the grafted cherry trees grow faster than all my other fruit trees. I’m feeding two- three times a year and mulching heavily. They need that cold winter, but be great to hear from others in Sydney...

@@HomeGrowninAustralia we get approx 500..600 chill hrs. I feed and mulch my trees as well and all my trees are grafted and are from Flemings. I think they don't like late afternoon western sun.
I feed 4 times a week and mulch thickly as well.
