    I can't believe it worked so fast. Maybe because I kept my cherries in the fridge for a week before that or something, but I have six saplings already.

      You could literally get a tree that cannot survive the weather conditions in which it is planted, ones that produce inedible junk cherries... If someone really wants cherries to eat they need to get a grafted cherry tree of the type they would like to eat.

      I read a comment from someone in a growing forum saying they got pretty good cherries after three years of producing cherries. Grapes are supposed to be the same way, the younger more sour grape crops are sold to grocery stores and the mature sweeter crops are used specifically for wine where there's better profit.

    • @susanfarley1332
      @susanfarley1332 Год назад +1

      Are you prepared to wait 15 years for lemons? I planted some lemon seeds and had a nice little tree growing in a pot. I worried about frost killing it so I brought it inside in the winter. Did this for years and no blooms or fruit. I finally looked up lemon trees in my propagation book from my horticulture course and the book said it takes 15 years to be mature enough to bear fruit. On the 15th year I had it outside getting sun and didn't know we were going to have a hard frost that night. The frost killed my tree.
      One thing I didn't know about lemon trees is that the leaves smell like lemons when you crush them. Oh yeah, another thing I didn't know about lemon trees is that they have huge long thorns on the branches. It makes handling them a bit painful. I would clip them off to avoid getting stuck.

    One thing you might want to add. You can sprout cherries all you like, but for the most part you will need to be in a region with about 700 hours of cold weather for the plant to produce cherries. At least that is what the local nurseries here tell me as I love Rainier Cherries but now that I live in Florida, we only have about 360 and i'm told they will never produce.

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  3 года назад +16

      That is great info for me to add in the next update I want to add a faq. Thanks Roger. I read on average its 1000 chilling hours for them to produce but it depends greatly on type or cultivar. Check out ‘Royal Lee’ and ‘Minnie Royal' apparently they need as few as 300 hours chill time. I have no idea what amount of chill time we get here in Malaga but should be enough, we get a good few months of coldish weather.

    • @matthewfarrell317
      @matthewfarrell317 3 года назад +6

    Snuggly buggly. That's a whole lotta love, right there.
    My Dad is gone now, but he raised up a pear tree until it finally bore fruit. He watched one beautiful pear every day to make sure it came to no harm. No bugs, worms, moths, fungus. Nothing. There were quite a few, but one qualified as his 'prized pear'. His very first!
    My older sister lived a few door yards away. She visited one day, with a beautiful pear and huge grin. "Dad!!! Look what I found on your tree!!"
    My Dad fought in WWII, so not much would rattle him. Right then, I heard the color ran from his face like he died a thousand deaths. Before he completely melted down, she fessed up that his pear was still on the tree. She had purchased one to look as close to his as possible. The only reason he ever spoke to her again is because that is the same kind of practical joke he would play on someone if he thought of it!

      Yeah you can try that, or a ziplock bag. The aluminium or ziplock is really just the help preserve moisture so the towel don't dry out so fast.

      The aluminum foil is there to simulate the darkness of the soil and to keep moisture. I have seen people use ziplock or even plastic bottles with very good results.

    i did a test with some seeds only in the fridge and another batch of seeds i put in the freezer for a week to see if there would be any difference, and so far it’s been around 6 weeks and the fridge ones have started to crack open and the freezer ones haven’t done anything yet. i also started late july so i’m not sure if it’s the right time of year to do this whole process

      I started mine in cold stratification mid July and mine are already 2" seedlings. I'm surprised that I had such a high germination rate from cherries I bought at Walmart.

      Same boat here. About 8 weeks and no stem sprout. I'm starting to think its B.S. as this is the 2nd batch I have tried.

      @@philmaestas2325 mine didn't germinate ( sprout) until I took them out of the refrigerator and put them on top of the refrigerator. I put mine in to cold stratify mid July and took them out mid October. I now have fifteen 2" tall seedlings.
