So i grow sweet cherry varieties...tart cherries are different...i think you do not prune those trees...brazilian cherries is in a way the same...just let the tree grow and cut away dry branches
This is the second year I’ve come back to this video - it’s so great, i felt confident pruning my cherries. My trees looked like year 2 when I got them. I pruned them late Feb. 2020 the first time. I didn’t prune them again after summer. I was about to prune now, but see you are pruning in the fall. Should I just wait till fall now? They branched out really nicely last year. They now look just like your year 3.
When will be the right time to prun? When i come from a cold region(-20c in winter). Dont want to loose a tree for the cold. I mean now we have 9-15 degrees and next month can happen that minuses are coming
Do you recommend pruning in the spring or fall? I planted my cherry tree into the ground last summer about July 2020. My tree is very thin. Do you recommend me cut it at knee level right now or should I wait until fall? It’s about 5 ft tall and is slinky with couple branches at the top?

SweetCherryGrower Oh, that’s interesting. Even feels like four years passed, the principal is the same. Thanks for demonstrating that, very, very helpful!
Hi, nice videos. I have a cherry tree that is already 4-5 years old, I let it grow quite vertically before finding you out on youtube. I'm now scared to cut the trunk at reach height because some major branches grew on top of it. Is it possible to damage the tree if I cut the trunk too short of its total height or can I just bring it back to bush status?
So yes my dear bounty hunter you can damage the tree ...this method must be apply early on the life of the tree...not even the Force can save it if you make a big cut on the trunk...the best is to leave it grow as it can and just remove the dead branches...
i'm struggling with red spot leaves fungus & I've been applying copper every spring but by mid summer it's back. should I apply it more frequently & if so how often & when?
So you can try to spray liquit chelate copper before its back in mid summer...some varieties will have the problem allways...do not spray simple copper in summer
Cutting below where it's, green as in where it's solid woody, takes away the main growth node where the plant puts it's time energy and resources into getting leggy and tall. Seeing it doesn't have to compete for sunlight or nutrients there's no reason the tree would ever want to be 12+meters tall. It benefits him in the long run having a full canopy at ground level where it's nice and pickably also he can inspect and spray and take care of business. It's similar to topping a pepper plant.
Hi, wish I have seen this video sooner, my cherry tree is about three years old, the base is about 3 inches in diameter and 10 feet tall. I did trim the top the last couple years, however the lowest branch is about 5 feet high. If I cut the tree to 4 feet, do you think the tree will survive? Thank you for your answer!
Its all in the rootstock..gizela 6 can last 12 to 15 years...my rootstocks maxima 14 and cab 6b can last 20 to 30 years...wild cherry rootstock can last 40 to 80 years....from planting
I got a baby stella prunim avium cherry tree 170cm tall that im gonna plant 2 meters away from the bush, in between is a path way. Will the cherry tree block that path? The idea is to use the cherry tree to shade that path, but still be able to walk on the path. Any advice? Is it possible what im doing
@@SweetCherryGrower I'm gonna try also in spring this shape for my young cherry trees. Do you think that the open vase shape is better for cherry than the shapes with an central axis (pyramid, etc). Thanks!
I didn't have this info when I planted my tree and let it grow. I knew to cut of inward branches so did that. I now have long straight branches as garden companies here in the UK sell cherry sleeves and I thought it was better to have long straight branches. Now I'm not sure. It is a nice shaped tree and 2 years ago I got lots fruit but last year it was infested with wasps so I just left it alone. We found a wasp nest in our loft and now that's gone and its Feb. Am I safe pruning and should I be drastic. We could still have low temperatures to come.??
Its ok to have long straith branches...wasp it not a problem for trees...you can prune even if cold weather come..an you can do it until the trees have flowers
Nice video, thank you. I’ve got a new cherry tree and this will definitely help me. Which month did you prune and where are you located? Thank you, Bill
So you've got lots of trees to prune, I imagine! I've just got one. I'll probably prune it mid March here in New York. Zone 5. That's near the end of winter. Thank you again!
@@SweetCherryGrower thanks. I ask because it's spring in Australia right now, and I've missed pruning at fall/autumn for a 3 year old tree. I've given it a Light prune anyway and spaced out the branches so I will give a major prune in autumn. fingers crossed!
In spring 4 or 5 branches will grow and they will be the base branches...we need those to start growing as lower it is possible....we need this to happen because the lower parts of the tree after some years will be just wood with no cherries ...if you start those base branches higher after a few year cherries will be much higher and hard to pick

It looks not early spring now
What time of year is best for pruning? It looks like fall from the video when the leaves start dying. Is there concern for winter injury?
Any time is ok just make sure the weather is dry...its fall in the video ..i prune from late summer to early fall...in my area the weather is dry that time...and yes if the winter is extremely cold frost damage will hit the pruning trees
what time of year is best for pruning? does it matter?
is it okay to prune and have no leaves remaining?
You can prune from the end of summer untill the start of spring no problem...do not prune when is about to rain or snow

At knee high? Probably will kill the tree
@@SweetCherryGrower they are about 7 feet tall so I’m guessing 5 feet would be ok ? The scary part is leaving no leaves or branches just a stick in the ground lol 😆

Thanks for the videos -- do you have something similar for peach and plum trees?
Nop...only cherries
Hi thanks for this. Is the basic concept the same for a dwarf cherry? i.e start a knee height?
Yes
So, we did the knee prune in year 1 but didn't prune at all in years 2-4. Tree seems healthy, blooms and bears fruit. But its canopy is a little narrow. Is it too late to begin pruning to encourage branching out?
Never to late
So should we just pick up where we left off? At the end of the summer take off the inward growing branches and shorten the tallest ones?

I want to use a cherry tree as a shade/backyard decor tree can i prune it the second year and let it grow in two major branches and let it gain height,Will it still produce fruit
You can do that no problem...
About how long would you wait before pruning a newly planted tree (~1.5 months until Spring)? I just put mine into the ground, it's about 5' tall but has good shape so far (no inward branches). Just wondering if I should wait until next season to give it a chance to settle in. Thank you, great videos

Hello. In the winters we are -25 celsius. Is there a risk for cutting at this time?
-25? Wow...here we have in the worst case -2 at the morning....yes it is a risk but with those temp having a orchard is a risk...prune when you have -5 the lowest
Also, what is the point of cutting the young trees at knee and chest length? Does it help with growing later on?
Knee high cut is the basic cut for make open vase system...all the steps in the video are made for this reason...trees are trees..they will grow ..we just show them how we like them to grow

Could you also say something about why you prune this way? It's very helpful, but I also want to understand why.
You can see my other videos and learn
The reason this video is so good, is because he does NOT talk, so many videos drone on with the pointless talking
If you have healthy buds in that area the tree will live and will be very strong...
@@SweetCherryGrowerThe tree is very large and healthy, is it OK to do it now or I should wait until the tree is dormant in the winter, Thanks
Winter you will do...
How many years can you continue to grow this cherry tree and get normal production?
Its all in the rootstock..gizela 6 can last 12 to 15 years...my rootstocks maxima 14 and cab 6b can last 20 to 30 years...wild cherry rootstock can last 40 to 80 years....from planting

Why do you prune it to the knee the first year?
In spring 4 or 5 branches will grow and they will be the base branches...we need those to start growing as lower it is possible....we need this to happen because the lower parts of the tree after some years will be just wood with no cherries ...if you start those base branches higher after a few year cherries will be much higher and hard to pick
