excellent video, I've just bought six small cherry trees to plant, this is very helpful indeed
In my country, Italy, cherry trees are pruned AFTER harvesting in late summer and we do minimal maintenance cuts when the plant is dormant in winter. Cherries need very little trims because they suffer a lot. I would definitely not touch any trees with blossoms. Maybe in the US this is different.
I live in US I am surprised by his stub cuts YIKES! I do landscaping not fruit farming so perhaps the pruning is different. I always thought the way to prune Cherry's was the way you said you do it in Italy. Some one responded that they prune when the sap is flowing because of the fungus Silver leaf but then stub cutting really does not make sense.
The stub cuts need to be in the light, which is what he said in the video. You can do pruning in any season, you have to adjust your cuts accordingly. This method renews your spurs and keeps the tree small and shaped well for efficient picking.
Te lumte mjeshter por nderyrja nuk eshte ne kohen e duhur
Schouldnt the pruning be done when the tree is dormant?
No, you can do it in spring-summer depends what you want to achieve.
Fabulous share! Sure learned a lot from this.
does any cheery tree produce pink flowers and fruit? thanks
I'm certainly no expert, but I just read, that cherry trees shouldn't be pruned until it's not active (late fall or winter), but with those blooms, it looks like it is spring time. Cutting the branches in the spring will cause no fruit for next year... but then again... I'm no expert. It's only what I read.
SokemRokemRobot stone fruit trees are pruned in the growing season when the sap is rising because these trees are susceptible to a fungal disease called silver leaf which enters new unhealed cuts/wounds in winter or very early spring there may be other reasons but that’s the one I know hope this helps.
@@greatwesternrailwayadventures Agreed. Prune when sap is rising. That would be in the spring here in the North East. The tree is stronger at this time, not dormant, and has more strength to heal. As far as no fruit for next year....may be true...i did not research this but as long as it flowers it would not matter too me. My Cherry tree is ornamental.
@@greatwesternrailwayadventures Good to know about silver leaf but his stump cuts! you could see stump cuts from last year which could be vectors for silver leaf, I don't get it
Better with a camera man who looks at what is being recorded .... half the time you don't see the cut!
Thanks a good reminder
when do you start pruning? I see the trees all have flowers. is Feb before flowering too early? Thanks. Gary B
i would like to know the answer to your question, too :)
Were the tree trunks pruned short at planting? Looks like they may have had a two foot high or so caliper cut
That is the graft for the rootstock.
anybody can say what type of gisela is first tree the profesor explain on? gisela 5 or 6? ty
He removed a lot of the tree. Less flowers less fruit. Is this wise?
yes less fruit but bigger fruit
@@588158 Yes but will the large limbs heal properly?
@@chickenfarm09 Of course it will regenerate.
very interesting!
thx great. for me the newb.
How old are the Gisela (#)?
What training system is this eg: KGB or Spanish?
Doing my 2 veg prune this June.
Thanks in advance.
we chopped 50% of the tree and talks about improving a new grow....insane

I dont really like the way there tree is shaped and they have a ton of strong wood inside there trees
To vigorous for gisela rootstock...
Get the camera man to frame what you are doing not you as a speaker . Closeup .
Pro tip: you can watch movies at flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Jackson Draven yea, have been using flixzone for years myself :D
@Jackson Draven definitely, been using Flixzone for months myself :D
This video is not very useful because when he makes cut you can't actually see him cut it. The cameraperson doesn't really understand how to shot the video to the talking and cutting. But thanks anyway.
fool
loppers... ugh.
