From Season 4 Episode 11 ''Frozen'': When Dr. Cate Milton (Mira Sorvino), a psychiatrist trapped in the South Pole and the research station's only doctor, becomes ill in the middle of her assignment, she and House are thrust into a long-distance relationship of sorts. Unable to get Cate out or any additional medical supplies to the South Pole station, House and his team must resort to treating her via webcam. Meanwhile House sends Taub, Kutner and Thirteen to harass Cameron until she gets cable for his office and he attempts to discover the identity of Wilson's new girlfriend. This episode originally aired in North America, outside of its regular time slot, immediately following Fox's broadcast of the Super Bowl XLII post-game show.

The episodes where they had to diagnose people in unique scenarios were always so great, this one and the man who wouldn't leave his home come to mind.
The CIA k1ller or the Chicken Pox with the CDC were epic.
The mass hysteria on a plane one was really good as well.
Cameron made me hate the episode where the guy wouldn’t leave his house
And more unrealistic than both
The lady whom’s leg had to be amputated outside the hospital comes to mine. Some sort of collapse…
"I never said you needed fixing"
Is probably the moment House fell in love.
It's the one line that instantly made that character interesting and relatable IMO
The chemistry is electric. House isn't used to people who match his wit. This was a really good episode where we see a different side of house.
"I never said you needed fixing" did it for me. Perfect woman for House.
Wish we could see more of Mira..she's awesome!
she's House's "the woman", like Sherlock Holmes had Irene Adler, I'm disappointed he never referenced her again and again like Holmes did occasionally but I do like Holmes did. People compare Amber to Irene Adler's role but she was too recurring.
"Are you worried that the tumour might overhear abd realise we're onto it?"
Foreman and House were an understated comedy duo.
This girl seems like a better match for House than Cuddy or Stacy.
Wilson is his only love
"If anyone needs it, we've got a phone!"
I never said you needing fixing + the witty banter (Perfect Match)
Yep she had him hook line and stinker after a while and the respectful competitiveness later on mixed with flirting, both definitely seemed a little into each other.
100%
It's a shame she decided to live in the South Pole. She's a more socially enjoyable version of House.
Whoever is keeping this channel running needs a raise
Don't worry, I got this
Zip.
That would be Sarah. I'll let her know.
I think peacock is doing just fine.
Fun fact: This was based on a true story. Jerri Nielsen was a doctor stationed at the South Pole who discovered a lump in her breast right as the Antarctic winter set in. She consulted other doctors via satellite link and performed a biopsy on herself. The air force then dropped supplies for her to start doing chemo. She was eventually evacuated and went into remission, though sadly passed away ten years later.
Still, 10 year death delay from that is a lot. No small feat.
@@twelved4983 yep
Why couldn't she be evacuated right away? I know she had a contract and whatnot, but you'd think that potentially having cancer would be a legit excuse?
@@Arsaja It's not a matter of urgency. The planes simply can't land, take off again and get home. When the landing gear opens, the hydraulics freeze. Flying with the landing gear deployed creates drag and the plane can't reach New Zealand.
@@Arsaja the weather wouldn’t allow them to
I really REALLY wanted this relationship to last more than one episode. They really had amazing chemistry. She might have been good for House long term. Even seeing them try long distance would have been, in House’s phrase “interesting”.
I guess it is not beacuse it couldn't happen in House lore, but because Mia Sorvino was single episode guest.
And so they made it up like House saw her in love with other guy from South pole and quit.
Originally she was meant to be a recurring character, but then the writers strike happened and the idea went away. That's why they intimated that she and House were 'compatable' on the episode. It was setting it up.
@@jcorbett9620 interesting background. thanks.
Hear hear!
@@jcorbett9620Stupid Strikes! Just give the writers what they want! Lol keep them happy to keep us happy lol
"ONLY IF YOU COUNT THE TUMOUR" is easily one of the best lines from the show.
"too far away to hold her hand" was gold too
She surpised him over and over, like "The Woman" for Sherlock Holmes, she wasn't easily figured out which intriged him and she's clever. When she said, "I never said you needed fixing" was the moment he fell for this woman.
It never ceases to amaze me how this WWI veteran gained so much medical knowledge after he got shot and got hooked on Vicodin. Godspeed doctor House.
I see what you did there.
He's a vet?!
right that old comedy show with mr bean actor ^^
@@kevinwaag9976 Wow, way to downplay Blackadder, one of the greatest comedy series of all time, set in different periods of British history with each series.
@@greypilgrim228 especially downplaying rowan Atkinson. He's good as Mr bean, but he's been doing speaking comedy longer and better
The look Foreman gives House when she snaps back is so perfect 😂
After seeing the entire episode, it is a broken toe. She can’t feel because of the cold.
and later on in the last scene of the video house missed the broken toe because she left the socks on
So why did her lung collapse?
@@gardeninginthedesert her brain is swelling because she didn’t know it was broken. It was really bad when they found it.
@@gardeninginthedesert The break was leaking bone marrow into her bloodstream, causing fat emboli.
Thanks for your and all the other commenters in explaining how this ended. I saw a few of the House episodes but never got hooked so I wondered how this one ended.
House looks so endearing when he sees someone who finally understands him for who he is beyond what he projects himself to be.
"Sorry, I know how you like avoiding avoiding confrontation."
Nice.
The fact that she clearly scared him a little and the fact that they had great chemistry, i really wished they have developed this relationship a little more. Allow them to have a long distant friendship. She clearly is very smart and can read him well but at the same time doesn't seem to be put off by his abrupt nature. The fact that she is a shrink means she actually could have been good for him as in both a friend capacity and in a more than friend capacity. Missed opportunity.
Fun fact: breaking stones with sound waves are a real thing that alot of hospitals do often, it's call lithotripsy
Not fun, but it works!
"I never said you needed fixing." Why is this such a compliment but hurts so much to hear.
It was a fat embolism or something like that: she had a broken toe that she didn't notice because of the cold. Once the guy at the station with her fixed the toe, her problems went away.
I would have loved for her and House to get together. I know the ending of this episode, but it would have been interesting to see House and her together.
Foreman's expressions at House were hilarious 😂 🫤
It was 2 months ago I seen one of these videos of the show and I just finished the whole series today. Amazing, sad, funny. Would watch all over again
Glad you enjoyed it, amazing series. My favorite episode by far is the one where the guy had 'the bends' on the airplane and the rest of the passengers had conversion disorder.
@@MatthewFutrell yeah! that one was good.
as much as i love house, it made my skin crawl when her lung was collapsing. had the same thing happen to me around a year ago
I like how the camera in Antarctica was able to pan in at the right moment.
That patient and House would have made quite a couple. The writers messed up by not bumping her up to a reoccurring character to test their chemistry more.
It was a guest appearance. Her filmography will show what other projects she was involved with...
by 'her" you mean Mira Sorvino, who won an Oscar/Golden Globe for her role in Mighty Aphrodite?
@@joefarmer4465 guests stars can be upgraded. Emily Rickards was only supposed to appear in one episode of Arrow, but she had good chemistry with Stephen Amell that they upgraded her to a reoccurring and then a regular.
@@mavfan1 your point being?
@@cloudtheavegner1000 Mira may have viewed a television gig as a downgrade...
Mira Sorvino is excellent here.
crazy chemistry
This was the moment when i fell in love with Kutner. Random knowledge from discovery channel used in medicine... brilliant
Wow, she managed to miss her ribs. No-one ever hits ribs on tv and movies.
She was using her fingers to mark where the ribs were, and inserted the needle between the fingers. I have no idea how hard it is to miss the ribs, but that should help.
@@jameskuypershould be pretty easy unless the patient is fat.
If someone tried to just jab a needle through their ribcage like that, most likely the needle would hit a rib and break.
This sequence and what follows is high on my favorite TV *ever* list.
Absolutely LOVE Mira Sorvino. Actually, the entire Sorvino family, if I'm honest.
She really is great.
Just one of my favorite actress of all time. Mira Sorvino is just fantastic.
Come for the episode stay for the comments! Respect to my fellow House addicts you guys are very entertaining.
Someone house could connect with, and they are on the other side of the globe.
The showrunners intended for her to be a recurring character, but then the 2007-2008 writers strike happened and the idea went away. Not sure if it was the writers strike that gave the episode the rather lame ending, with her cuddling the man who loved her, but staring at House or if that was the original intended ending.
Mira sorvino is a gem
I really wish she came back in the series at some point. House seemed to genuinely like her. The ending of "I liked her and that caused me to miss something so I shouldn't ever like someone" was so disappointing.
I relate to that ending way too much 🫥
Yeah. "Things can't be perfect so I'll just wallow in loneliness and horrible circumstances to avoid any real work"...
oh wait, that's just me!
Mira Sorvino have some indefinible charm
I miss the days when some MVP commenter would comment with the title of the next video in the sequence.
Had a longtime crush on Mira Sorvino, so I was so stoked to see her in this episode.
Hate it when they introduce someone with intense chemistry with a lead character but never have them appear again
This entire episode is basically what happened with Apollo 13. NASA had to work with the astronauts to figure out how to make a square air-filter over a circular tube, or else they'd die of carbon monoxide poisoning (iirc). And they could only do it using *exactly* what the astronauts had available, *plus* account for the fact they only X amount of tries to get it right.
The dump scene is literally a copy- it's awesome because it's so iconic.
Sorry, but that scene in Apollo 13 was made up. The engineers had figured out how to do that before any of the Apollos were launched. It was cinematic license to add drama.
This episode is one of the best for House.
"It means it's not a kidney stone..." CLASSIC LINE!
She was one of the best characters on the show
Fun fact: That actress is an Oscar winner. She does such a great job in this episode, wish she was in more.
Hands down my favorite episode
This show was just beyond
Love this one!!!
You know its sad seeing episodes with Kutner still alive
kutner?
@@maxgee22 yeah
That kůnt went to work at the "White" House instead of working at the best show ever in the universe.
"You do realize only one of us has control over my actions?"
You can him falling in love with her with that one sentence.
I was down in mcmurdo station the year they had to airlift the sick doctor from the south pole station. Short weather window to fly in.
Hottest line in the entire series: "I never said you needed fixing."
Some people are perfectly wonderful, the broken way they are
A masterpiece of House.. probably the best in the entire series ❤
Those two had potencial as a couple 😢
"Oh for sure. One of us is a bloody-handed butcher, the other is a real doctor."
I love this episode they were great
Good episode
One can realize in these chapters that, in principle, the writers had planned for Kurtner to be the next (or closest to the next) House. Not even Chase had that many good ideas often.
Kurtner is an amazing creative mind in the medical field, but Chase is definitely more House-like than anybody else. Even though the show liked to pin it on Foreman.
The writers never had any long-term plans for Kutner because they never had any long-term plans for Mr. White Castle himself, Kal Penn; they didn't know it was going to be a White House gig, but they knew he'd leave sooner rather than later. By contrast, Chase was the character originally conceived to be House's medical "partner-in-crime" and the only other attending physician in his department; it was only when they cast the much-younger Jesse Spencer in the role that they made him a fellow like Cameron and Foreman.
Also he had an emotional connect with House unlike other fellows who saw House only with his outer image
Man I wish this went somewhere with her. They would’ve made a very… interesting dynamic
They honestly had so many missed opportunities for recurring characters or actual relationships and friendships on this show.
That was amazing.
"I love to laugh" 🤣
There's no way I could stab myself in the chest. I would be paralyzed by fear...
It’s too bad they can only talk through a computer screen. I bet they’d be good together, because she’s one of the rare people that can hold their own against House and he likes it!
Man, she really had him when she said he didn't need fixing. That was good.
Wait she was asked to x-ray her whole body; how did they miss the broken toe if they actually saw the x-ray? Did something occur that prevented her from getting the x-ray? Been a while since I've seen this episode
I didn't see the episode, but I gather that when she was undressed for the exam they are discussing in this clip, she kept her socks on. She probably also didn't X-ray her feet either, because everything they were considering/looking at was in her upper body, basically from her thighs upwards. It's only later when House realises the only part of her body he hasn't seen, are her feet, that it clicks.
Once again, the great Mira Sorvino proves why she was unjustly railroaded from the business, in spite of being a MONSTER talent. Not many people hold with "House", let alone believably take him on.
Too bad she wouldn’t come on as a regular. That would be an excellent side story.
Mira Sorvino is Awesome.
I don't know why the syringe lung scene really got to me. 😵💫
Such an awesome last line and she definitely is better for house the cuddy. She would constantly challenge him and not put up with his bs till he became a better man.
Wasn’t everyone in the room before the egg blew up? Then they disappeared
Mira Sorvino ❤
Wilson better have decided to do chemo
Ahh Mira Sorvino. Had a huge crush on her in the late 90s
What episode is this? The description is empty for me.
Season 4 Episode 11 ''Frozen'':
She's perfect for him, they should have become a thing
they would have been so good together🥲🥲
Soundwaves from the Flaw Detector? Those probes are usually 5Mhz so good luck with breaking down a kidney stone.
awesome
Games people play.
A psychatrist is a real doctor....she is an MD and a therapist.
“I never said you needed fixing” 🥲
Definitely wrote this episode after watching apollo 13
Even funnier, that scene from Apollo 13 where they MacGyver CO2 scrubbers didn't happen in real life. (One of their geniuses worked it out in his car on the way to NASA, but that isn't very cinematic.) But diagnosing a woman trapped at the South Pole via satellite link really did happen.
that ultrasound destruction method of the kidneystone TEST was stupid... they put it in a glas container...
and yes: would have loved to see this relationship develop for more then one episode
I didn't catch the Apollo 13 reference before :p 0:47
I'm so happy someone else caught it
Is she the Irene Adler to his Sherlock 👀
probably
Oh absolutely! Down to leaving with another guy at the end, lol.
Where do Taub Kutner and 13 go? You can see Taub's head at 2:01 and then by 2:10 House is sitting in the chair Taub was in and then 2:33 it's just House and Foreman.
This episode shows one of the reasons I really miss Kutner. To me he seemed to have a mind most similar to House' when it came to diagnosing
eaching conclusions.
It's Lupus....its always Lupus.
Title should be "A Diagnosis That Went Nowhere But South."
A friggin broken toe
Shouldn't the title say nowhere but south?
I never said you needed fixing....very nice
When he said snow dogs I laughed
6:43 😂😂😂
Love Mira Sorvino! What a great actress.
I can't imagine just straight up stabbing yourself with a needle to let air out of your lungs. I'd be so reluctant to just actually stab myself lol
