it's something I don't understand how few people get, house shows time after time that he cares deeply not only about the diagnoses but also about the patients, he does it in a dumb and insulting manner to prove to himself and others (not very convincingly) that he doesn't care but the show still makes it obvious time after time

House doesn't charge. He is at a teaching hospital and if you get assigned to him it means zero hospital bills. His fame is what keeps other people wanting to go to that hospital.
That's not how any hospital works, teaching or not. Someone pays the bills. There could be an entire spin-off show of the billing department trying collect on House's care. If insured, you know they would fight tooth and nail House's extravagant treatment. Whatever they refuse to pay goes to the patient, and then possibly the hospital could forgive all or parts of the bill if the patient pleads charity (or lawyers up). I guarantee you some of the patients House saved faced medical bankruptcy after.

The Drs gave up and initially refused to do anything further and was getting ready to put her in Hospice. Not trying to gain any glory here but I got in a couple of Drs face and said something along the line of do the Dr. House thing instead of quitting. Shamed them into it I guess. In the end they found a solution to thin her blood and she lived for another 10 years. What can I say?
