You make a good point. Historically, the rich gorged on meat, refined flour and sugar. Peasants were restricted to whole grains, beans, greens and veggies. Guess who got gout.
@TheSyndicateGreece Of course, the situation would have depended upon the specific historic period under consideration, but generally speaking, death in childbirth was a universal experience not restricted to a specific class. And of course the peasantry suffered more in times of famine, but in times of plenty their diet had much in common with current nutritional recommendations.
The only reason why the poor didn't "gorge" on meat, refined flour and sugar is because they couldn't afford it. When these foods became cheap enough the masses started "gorging" on them too. It's not a reason to judge someone.
I’m an old guy 64 trying to learn how to cook decent food. I’ve tried 2 of the recipes here and can’t believe how easy they were and how good they tasted!
LOL 64 isn't old! I am 64 too. Cold Sunday night in Australia, and was looking for a warm recipe. Just found this channel.... Love this guy and his recipes. Simple and really tasty....really hit the right spot. I am mostly vegetarian and these recipes are spot on.
My Spanish grandmother made a soup occasionally (and always on New Years Day) that I loved. It started with tuna or salmon fritters ( the fish mixed with rice, egg, onions, peppers, etc., formed into a patty and fried till golden brown in olive oil ) The soup was a basic chicken broth soup with broken capellini pasta, carrots, chick peas, and slices of chorizo, parsley. Each serving of soup had a fritter in it. It was soooo good.
I love these kinds of soups....i call it my fridge clearing soup...always use beans from the pantry and then see whats left in the fridge or freezer (or veg I've dehydrated) and throw it in!! Always different, but always hearty and delicious
I love your recipes and you demonstrate the cooking procedures so well. It is so easy to eat well on a modest budget. Also, for vegetarians, this is perfect for all their protein needs.
This is very similar to a recipe from my Spanish grandmother that my mother used to make. Sadly, searched though I tried, I could never locate the recipe. Ours was very heavy on garlic and parsley, with a bit of tomato added. I recreated a nearly identical version a few years ago, and loved it. I'm so delighted to find an authentic Spanish recipe......thank you!
Thank you for this! So simple, inexpensive, and nutritious. And you have a nice, calm presentation, which is very soothing, when everyone seems to be nervous and excitable. I will be making this for my lunch, because I have everything on hand.
By the size of your kitchen I can safely guess you are in an apartment somewhere in Spain. :-) After so many years in the US I had forgotten how delicious the food from my country of origin is, especially "nuestra comida de cuchara." I am very grateful to you for inspiring me to cook again many of Spain's wonderful recipes. ¡Mil gracias, amigo!
I've got a pot of it simmering right now. the smell in the house is amazing. i love how humble food bestows more benefit than extravagant. brilliant as always!
I love your channel. My grandparents immigrated to the US from northern Spain. I've only been to Spain once on a family vacation, but your recipes are wonderful and help me to re-connect to my familial history. Thanks!
I watch a number of cooking channels (Spain on a Fork is one of my favorites) and the one thing that stands out to me is that the best dishes are almost always the simplest and easiest. This wonderful soup is a case in point and its now in my "recipe box". Thanks for sharing.
Many of the world's most beloved recipes began as humble peasant dishes. While kings and nobles were busy impressing each other with elaborate presentations and expensive spices, the poor folk were left to figure out how to make the most of simple ingredients, coming up with filling and delicious recipes.
I feel so so so much love for your recipes, they make me feel so deeply rooted to Spain, even though I'm from Russia. Especially when they are vegan. They are always so so so nutritious, tasty, full of flavours of this beautiful country, it's like heaven. This soup is so great: hearty, healthy, colourful.. it brings comfort to my soul lol
I love your videos. I feel like its a double win. I learn new recipes and i also learn about spain. Me being puerto rican, i love learning about “la madre España”..
As we enter the colder months in New Zealand Aotearoa this Spanish simple vegetable and herb soup is a great reminder that hearty healthy food can be straightforward and delicious.
Me encantan todas tus recetas. Vivo en Ciudad del Cabo y siempre echo de menos la comida de mi tierra, así que cocino mucha más cocina española aquí que cuando estaba allí. Gracias! Ahora tengo videos en español que mandarle a mi amigas que hablen inglés
Made this for the wife last night. She took a little spoonful and added more to her bowl. Before she left for work this morning she told me how excited she was for leftover soup for lunch. Good recipe!
Excellent channel. Clear, well explained and allows the food to be the star. I made your lentil stew yesterday and it was delicious. I'm going to be so much healthier following your recipes. Thanks and keep up the good work, I'm subscribed.
That soups looks fabulous and also so easy to make. If I were to make it, I think I might add a bit of tomato paste to it just to kick up the flavor a little and also thicken the consistency. I love that it’s made with chickpeas. I can eat them just plain but in a soup, they must be divine.
Haha. I have just been speaking to a friend who is a retired clergyman and he often goes to Spain to do locum work. So your beautiful recipe was obviously part of a heavenly package for me this evening sir! Blessings and peace.
Hhhhhh i was laughing 😂, because of the title and I remember as a child I was rised poor and true I was eating healthy raw vegetables 🌽 🍅 🌶 🥕 🥬 on my hand. Poor and proud👍
Beautiful, tasty, healthy, my kind of soup; I love making soup it's very therapeautic and you ultimately have a meal that you can wrap yourself around, warming comfort food that's good for you.🌹
The Indian version of this recipe is 'channa masala' (spicy garbanzo curry) is just heavenly. Although it is more complicated, it is definitely worth the effort.
Made this tonight, but - knowing our tastes - added a teaspoon of chili flakes and a thumb-sized piece of leftover parmesan rind during preparation. Was wonderful! Thanks, Albert!
I am " Peasantly" surprised at how humble and simple ingredients can have so much flavour and nutrition. Thanks for posting this delicious recipe.
lol...thank you! much love :)
Nice one🙂🌹
I get a chuckle out of your name being Spain on a Fork but 90% of your recipes are eaten with a spoon. Love your videos.

What!?! Again a recipe with no Spanish paprika? Great job Albert. It looks delicious. I must try it.
This is a medieval recipe, no peppers in Spain at that time :) but trust me, a little paprika would be amazing on it! much love Chris

Love the recipe! But we usually buy dried chickpeas and soak it overnight to rehydrate it. Cooked ones always have too much salt and preservatives
So simple, yet looks so delicious!

Just one tip... Before lowering down the heat for pot to simmer, just mash some chick peas with a spoon or fork. The end result will be good.
Peasant soup is a must.
I wish I were so lucky as to have eaten such delicious looking "peasant food" before but it's not too late! Looks delicious!
