  • “All of Me” is a jazz standard from 1931 recorded by multiple musicians including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. This instrument is a Windsor mellophone (serial #34817) made in Elkhart, Indiana in the 1920s-1930s. It has been converted into a Don Elliott style jazz mellophone by Paul Abel of the Abel Brass Clinic in Rochester, NY. The backing track is from Jazzbacks and the custom mouthpiece by James R. New of Hurricane, UT combines a trombone cup and a mellophone shank.

      Trust me, if you spend all of your money on goofy instruments when you are young you will never have to worry about choosing a financial advisor when you are old. Some say this is a bad thing but you have a jazz mellophone and don't have to sit in some suits office. Hmmmm

    Interesting horn, and interesting mouthpiece for the size of that instrument. Thanks for sharing!

    Just out of curiosity, how much did this cost overall? Price of the mellophone and the labor combined. I’ve been looking into doing this recently

    Really cool!. I’m a composition major and a brass musician-mainly trombone-I’m thinking about becoming a jazz mellophonist. Do you think using a marching mellophone could achieve the same approach?

    • @tlbmusic
      @tlbmusic  3 года назад +6

      I don't know why not. I actually just purchased a flugabone (marching trombone) to use with other jazz pieces.

    Does this mellophone use trumpet fingerings or French horn Bb trigger fingerings?

    • @tlbmusic
      @tlbmusic  3 года назад +3

      This instrument is in the key of E-flat so playing with trumpet fingerings in the key of C it sounds a minor 3rd higher in E-flat.

    • @tlbmusic
      @tlbmusic  3 года назад +2

      Technically, it sounds a major 6th lower in E-flat.

    Hi! Is this tune in the key of concert Db?

    • @tlbmusic
      @tlbmusic  7 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, the mellophone is reading B-flat which is D-flat concert. This means I have to transpose most backing tracks to the key appropriate for the mellophone.

  • @hillelsalem4615

    This is for sell? And there is an option to change it to The key of Bb?

    • @tlbmusic
      @tlbmusic  2 года назад +3

      No, it is not for sale. Key of E-flat is fixed.

    I've confused it with a trombone on 20's recordings.

    'Mellophone' is what we called marching French horns, but this sounds like a somewhat constricted baritone. So, is 'mellophone' the wrong word to apply to marching French horns?

      It has a fairly thin and lifeless tone that this player is pushing to the limit with his fantastic vibrato

      @blackbeltjones2903 Месяц назад +1

      @finscontingencyplan7005 OK I had a feeling that's what you meant. I can agree with that. It sounds lo fi, like a horn played from an old 30s record. Of course, his audio set up isn't the best either.
