I very much enjoyed this deep dive. I read The Machine Stops early in 2023 and was so astonished that I had to keep looking at the publication date. 😮 I always enjoy your entertaining videos, with or without the hilarious antics of your cat.

Thank you! I don't know why she's so keen to be in the videos 😅

I needed Minerva’s antics today. I laughed at her insistence on being a part of your task.

She just had to be part of the video, I didn't get a choice 🤣

Wow I'm so excited to read this! I love Forster but I had no idea he'd written anything like this.

Yes, it's so different from his novels! As are the other short stories of his I've read so far.

I just listened to this story a couple of weeks ago. WOW. I relate to it in the sense that my son & I have the story roles in reverse. (Who knows if that is how the story's current situation evolved over time.) Very thought provoking! I like reading E.M. Forster and pleased that he stepped outside of his usual genre to write this one! Thank you for your entertaining review Claudia! Pspsspsss to Minerva too!😁

Wonderful video, thank you! Ive subscribed to your channel. I first read the story long ago and read it again the day before yesterday. One of my English students is currently reading it and we will discuss tomorrow. I'll send him a link to this video.

Didn't realise Forster wrote stuff like this. I like his musings anyway. And in a way I'm not in the least surprised he wrote this. Enjoyed your exploration of this work, and Minerva's shenanigans! 😹😻

Enjoyable review! I've read this book, and I got the big theme but I clearly missed a lot by not comparing to the current world. Would be interesting to learn your process and approach to dive deeper into books and getting more from them without getting into academic interpretations. I take notes after reading a book I enjoy, but I always look at the big picture, clearly at the expense of the details.

Thank you! It's easier to go into the details with something like a short story rather than a novel. In preparation for this video, I printed off the story and highlighted sections that stood out, then took notes from there.

Thanks for this, friend. I had no idea Forster produced such far-seeing, imaginative work.
Yes, current AI is profit based, but it might not always be so.
The answer (you're looking for) may be right in front of you, in the relationship between you and Minerva (if I have the name right, since I don't KNOW her). She has no idea why you feed and care for her. To her, you are an AI God, with no adds, no apparent reason why you should like her, and you don't charge a pfennig or a penny for anything.
The thought that the AI is self-sustaining by extracting energy from the kept humans (using other machines) sounds quite Matrix-y.
    Happy New Year

And to you! My life would be much easier if my cats treated me like a god 😅

However, your cats DO treat you at least a rank or two up from AI God; they treat you like a MOTHER.@@SpinstersLibrary

Yeah - I like the _Beavis and Butt-Head_ interruption "She said 'intercourse' - huh huh." Any porn in this dystopia?
At the time Forster reflected on 5 decades post his story there were high hopes for computer and communication technology, which was new. He hadn't been exposed to the downsides of the internet.
