5:06 OMG I laughed out loud at your description here 😂😂😂😂😂 (And i agree, terrible cover for such a great novel... who is that girl supposed to be? It's certainly not Anne Elliot 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️)
When I was a kid on a kid-sized book budget, I bought so many Wordsworth Editions from Half Price Bookstore. They were certainly dreadful, with frequent misspellings, bad footnotes, tiny print, and that cheap pulpy paper. I admit I still feel a little nostalgic about them though. ❤️ I re-read my copy of David Copperfield recently and was delighted to be reminded that somewhere along the way, the footnotes numbering system got messed up and you had to do a bit of mental calculation to find the right one. 😂 I feel like the covers have gotten noticeably worse though? When I was a kid, they were usually just random old paintings. If the main character of the book was a rich fancy guy, the picture would be of a rich fancy guy. If the main character was a young woman, the picture would be a young woman (possibly with a dog, which was never part of the story). But now they all seem to be horrible photoshop or AI? Can that really be cheaper than just using an old public domain painting? 😬
As this video highlights, the quality of Wordsworth paperbacks is greatly underrated. Many people assume cheaper equals inferior. Not so. While Wordsworth’s font is indeed smaller & their former covers weren’t aesthetically pleasing, the longevity of their paperbacks generally holds up well against significantly pricier Penguin editions. Many Penguin editions are still over twice the price of Wordsworth editions of the same titles. Not knocking that as Penguin also publish many more titles. As for the new Wordsworth book covers? To each their own as in all things, but I like the newer, more artistic designs. I already have a good number of them & intend to buy more. I just wish there were more titles to choose from.
This was so much fun!😅 I got 4/5, missed the North and South, because I have a different edition. It's also black Wordsworth, but it has people on the cover. I have a soft spot for these editions. I own 30ish of them, mostly black covers and a few blue ones. I didn't know about the new ones, they look so much better. Thanks for this video. 😊I had fun and learnt something about the company.
😊This was one of the most interesting videos I've watched in a while & loved the Guessing Game- I scored 3 out of 5 😁! Will definitely try to check the new editions of Wordsworth Classics now if they are changing the cover designs! Thanks a million for sharing 😊👍👍👍
Here is a question.....please help 🙂 I have the Oxford World Classics edition of Poor Miss Finch by Wilkie Collins (love his novels but not this one so much ); anyway, the cover. I have seen that cover of the two women in another book but cannot remember which novel or whether 🐧 or Wandsworth. Any duggestions, please ? Thank you. Regards from GB.
Made a new list of classics I own to prevent buying doubles, and I found I own 14 Wordsworth books. And those are just the ones I could easily remember the location of. I love charity shops, so none of them were ever more than £3.
You should look into the affordably priced academic publishing juggernaut "Dover Classics" who, in the 80s introduced their line of "Dover thrift editions" at $1 a copy! They changed the covers in the 2000 the thrift editions are no longer thrifty, and some of the most ugly covers you've ever seen - a shame because Dover Classics from the 60s still have bright white pages with sewn in binding!!!
These book covers are pretty "terrible", but I like them. The updated covers are aesthetically pleasing, but don't have as much character, imo. The bad covers are more memorable ....Dracula 😅.
Hi Claudia, I enjoyed the video. The covers are truly awful. But they seem to be a tad better now at least the ones you showed with the matching covers. The publisher, I dislike most are the Dover thrift editions . It’s not because of the covers, but the font and the type setting. They are really horrible! I won’t be fooled again by Amazon. sending you lots of aloha
In the book cover guessing game I got 4 points I only have one Wordsworth classic book the one with the blue border and it's Cranford and other stories by Elizabeth Gaskell
For 1 i was also already shouting pride and prejudice and it's not an option 😂 but i got it from the blurb. 2 i knew as i has that cover 😊 Your tenant of wildfell hall is better than my wordsworth one. Doing what in the birdbath now? 😮🫣😆 3 i own so i got (feels like im cheating🤭) I got 4 wrong - i dont know how 😜 Thanks for the edition comparisons amd the history 🤩 Got 5 right 🎉 Great format; lots of fun ❤

Entertaining and informative: the best of both worlds. Interesting history on cheap books. Thanks, Claudia.
It was good to see Bill. I enjoy your discussions of book covers. Thank you. BTW I got 3.5 - I chose one covered changed my mind at the last min.
I'm living for these book cover reviews of yours - thank you so much! 😻

I buy nearly all my books second hand 📚📚📚📚
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I still don't know why wordsworth has some truly abominable covers though.
Hi Claudia😁!!! Dracula!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Wordsworth Classic 👍👍👍👍👍I can never forget that cover 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍! Still watching this video 😁!

3. That was fun. Your commentary on the covers is so funny!!😂
Great video, Claudia, and excellent prop work from Bill! I guessed 3 out of 5.
Haha, a very entertaining and informative video.
Great work, Claudia 👍🏼
What a great video! Thank you!-

@@SpinstersLibrary So much fun, and I hope you will do more of these in the future.

3/5! Really enjoyed this video!
Oh dear - what does a booktuber have to do to get 4/5? 🤣
😂

Please give Count Vlad's caterpillar twins some more love, people!
Aeneid = eh-KNEE-id (at least how I was taught to pronounce it.
As for falling apart like wet confetti and teeny tiny print, I find Dover Classics worse than Wordsworth. Their covers are boringly pleasing though
3 out of 5. Moll Flanders was so bad I wanted to guess that but didn't dare. Lol
Some fantastic books there. Best wishes.

Got 2!

By this point I'm more disappointed by the aesthetic covers 😂
I know right? Commit to the ugly already...
The new style of covers is AWFUL. Blingy. Yuk!
I prefer the older copies, hands down
Sorry, they are £3.99 now 😯
For 1 i was also already shouting pride and prejudice and it's not an option 😂 but i got it from the blurb.
