    SCTV had less commercials when it was broadcast in Canada than when it was broadcast in the US, so the producers asked them to make an extra sketch for the show that would only be broadcast in Canada. They asked them to make something that was uniquely Canadian.
    So Moranis and Thomas came up with "Great White North" hosted by their characters Bob and Doug McKenzie.

      I don't think it had to do with the difference in advertising time because they aired the Great White North segments in the US too. (After all, that's where I watched them.) I think the "uniquely Canadian" requirement came from the Canadian government or the CBC. In any case, I love that something that they threw together haphazardly just to fulfill some requirement became the most popular thing on the show.

    Fun facts: they had the full cooperation of TWO police forces. All they had to say was "it's for a Bob & Doug movie!"
    -old man MacKenzie was voiced by Mel Blanc.
    -the brewery was played by Labbats brewery.
    -if this gives you Shakespeare vibes, that's because the subplot is a modern retelling of Hamlet.
    -if one of the tall, dark haired lunatics looks familiar, that's because he was played by Michael Richards aka Kramer!

    Hosehead going to Oktoberfest is my favourite part of the movie. The segment on SCTV was added to make fun of Canadian content rules which ironically kept SCTV in reruns into the 2000s. SCTV segments are on RUclips but full episodes are unavailable anywhere, Dave Thomas said it would be millions of dollars to clear all the music they used without permission. Bill Murray was a guest star a few times on SCTV and cast members went on to SNL.

      Similar here in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Beer and wine can be bought at any retailer with an ABC {Alcohol Beverage Control} license. However, stuff of higher proof has to be bought at an ABC "Package Store". Retailed directly by the Commonwealth.

    I was ten years old when this came out and I can not even begin to tell you how many times I watched it that year. I had never met anyone from Canada and figured the way the were talking, the “eh” and “hoser”, was just to make the brothers strange. Then one night one of my parents best friends from high school showed up at our house after having basically disappeared for years. Turns out he made moved to Canada without letting anyone know. He was now married to a Canadian woman. My parents and their friend, with his wife, were sitting in the dining room talking and I was in the living room on the couch watching tv but could hear the conversation. The wife was saying something and my world came to a standstill. I don’t recall what she was talking about but then it happened, as her statement ended in “eh!” I flew off the couch, and without even considering my parents sitting there, yelled “HOLY SHIT, that’s actually real?” Everyone stared, me scared as I realized what I had just said, and they said “what are you talking about. I explained about the movie and that this woman just said “eh.” Her and her husband laughed and said yes people do actually say that in Canada. This summer my wife, son, and I went to BC for the first time and were talking to a lady in a store and she used the phrase and I told my son “see I told you!” The lady just chuckled and said “yep, we say it.”

My brother-in-law who passed this year would trade lines from this movie with me; we'd always repeat lines like "it's a jelly eh" and "I know about electricity, eh" and we'd always know where they came from and laugh.

  • @dostatochno

    The Bob & Doug McKenzie sketches were part of SCTV. Either the production company or the network required "Canada-specific content" due to regulations, despite the show being made in Canada, starring Canadians, and being written by Canadians. They joked, something to the effect of "what more do you want, a couple guys in flannel, wearing tuques, drinking Molson and talking about hockey?" and the producers/network/whoever basically said "yeah, that'll do."
    So the characters were born out of Dave and Rick making the most out of a premise that was just them making fun of the "Canada-specific" requirement with ridiculous stereotypes.

    • @michaelbuhl4250

      I thought The Great White North segments on SCTV were just "okay" until I learned about this backstory. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis would put on tuques, drink real beer, and just improvise to 2 minutes, and that became by far the most popular thing on the show. They even did an entire episode of SCTV making fun of how popular the characters had become. ("Great White North Palace," 1982, season 3, episode 4, guest star Tony Bennett)

This movie shaped my life in many ways. No lie. I watched it for the first time at age 11 when it came out, and I've since seen it probably in the neighborhood of 100 times. I made my future wife watch it on our first date in 2005 as a test to see if she and I were compatible in the sense of humor area (I didn't know that she'd already seen it and loved it too). SCTV (Second City Television)), a Canadian sketch comedy show like Saturday Night Live. Beside Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, and Joe Flaherty. Bob and Doug McKenzie "skit" was like Wayne's World, an "access TV" channel show called "The Great White North." They even got Geddy Lee (lead singer from Rush) to do a theme song for it. They had a comedy album (vinyl) that had some great bits from their show, including the title song, "Take Off!"

  • @jeremygeorgia4943
    @jeremygeorgia4943 8 месяцев назад +4

    Wayne's World is a pretty good analog, since "Great White North" was a segment from the show "SCTV". SCTV was a comedy show, similar to Saturday Night Live. In fact, the official (fictional) backstory was that some guys had an idea for a TV show that was rejected by NBC. They then decided to start their own TV network and broadcast their own content. It's similar to UHF, but this was way before that. It also stared Joe Flaherty, Catherine O' Hara, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy and John Candy.
    Instead of having a host, and live studio audience parts, it had parts that dealt with managing their station. These would then be mixed with skits that represented TV show ideas. They had one skit, where Merv Griffin does a tribute to Sci-fi, then gets taken by aliens in a flying saucer. They even had a recurring soap opera, that lasted a few episodes. Most of the skits represented low budget shows, like you might find on a typical independent station, in the UHF range. It is definitely worth checking out. Some parts are rough - especially in the early episodes. Other parts are absolute genius.

      @themoviedealers 7 месяцев назад

      There's two seasons prior to the show getting picked up by NBC. It was syndicated. Those are REALLY low budget. It's basically a person yelling at a camera in a bare studio over and over.

    Holy. Shit. Upvote, upvote, upvote. I've been gleefully quoting this with my friends for 40 years.
    Never thought I would see a reaction to one of the most beloved comedies of my generation. My comedy geek friends and I loved SCTV, but of course it wasn't as big as SNL, so like a lot of fans (Conan O'Brien), we felt like it was our special thing. They asked who do they have in mind for the brewmeister and Dave said he was thinking of a Max von Sydow type of actor. 5 minutes later they got Max von Sydow on the phone and he's explaining this ridiculous movie to him. Apparently Max's son had seen the skits and was a fan and that tilted it in their favor.

    If you want to see a Rick Moranis in a "not as nerdy" role you should check out Club Paradise...also stars Robin Williams, Peter o'Toole, Eugene Levy, and a bunch of other great comedic actors.

    I like how you were laughing all the way to the end and thru the end credits. It’s kind of hit or miss. You took the words out of my mouth that Rick Moranis finally wasn’t a “nerd” in this movie. Seems like they made them into a nerd all the time with shrinking the kids and Ghostbusters. In the spirit of strange brew, you’re gonna start your own Oktoberfest? Wow that’s dedication!

    As a kid I saw this movie many times. It is my dad's favorite. We even had the Great White North comedy album on LP. I always (jokingly) say this is the best adaptation of Hamlet to be filmed. The connections are there, Elsinore, a father killed and a brother married in--and clearly Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. You were on with the comparisons for the characters. These guys were on a skit on SCTV (Canadian SNL) and were essentially Wayne's World before Wayne's World. Even if this isn't a high performer for you guys I'm so happy you saw the film!

    Yes! You guys watched this classic! I grew up on the original SNL cast and SCTV, and actually preferred SCTV once the original SNL cast left. So many great stars and hilarious characters from this show, including the McKenzie Brothers, and this movie is pure stupid fun! Great reactions as always! 😊

    I certainly was a hoser in high school, living in Montana. My best friend and I imitated these two often. Loved the story that "The Great White North" and the McKenzie Brothers only came into being because of a Canadian broadcasting law that required them to have at least one minute of Canadian content one SCTV.

I let Rivk now that my two little brothers were big fans of the movie Honey I shrunk the kids. So before our last filming day Rick went out of his way to write my brothers a very nice note. Which thry still have today.

    The TV show they were from was SCTV, the Mackenzie brothers skit was called the great white north. The Canadian Broadcaster told them they needed a certain percentage of the show had to have Canadian content. They came up with their sitting around drinking beer and made up some goofy sayings and talked about whatever they thought of that day, it was mostly adlib.
