As usual another great story of the mountain peoples struggles.
Thanks JD for entertaining us with a much needed history lesson !
Back in those days people worked hard just to survive .
I guess a lot like today for different groups of people !
But the times were hard and the work wasn’t just to earn money it was a growing country with changes people befitted from because of the sacrifices of others .

Welp, that’s whatcha call a plot twist😂 sad but I remember my grandmother saying if she ever won the publishers clearing house she’d fall over in a dead faint…… sad but I still have to chuckle at the irony of it all. Poor Sarah, all she wanted out of life was a little sitting chair and when she got it, it was all too much for her. (Yes I know it was the shock of seeing her “dead” husband)

What seemed especially interesting about the story characters was the juxtaposition ,of their thoughts and attitudes. .After learning , in turn, that the other had died. Quite curious
Her immediate reaction was to feel like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders., and she was excited over what life would be like on her own.
But he on the other hand, his first reaction is to fall to the ground and hold her. " He was a broken man, who lost the love of his life, the only reason he went to work in that coal mine everyday. His life forever changed.
I am sure this story is intended to make a statement, just exactly what that statement is , I am not sure, I have a couple idea's though.

"Then you will be the property of your brothers until you marry again, (or until they or you are dead)". Thank Goodness my father did not go along with my mother's mountain ways. My sister and I both married. We both ended up divorcing our husbands (and raising our children alone in different parts of the country). Thank Goodness Daddy did not follow our mother's ways. i really enjoy your stories. i have wondered if you had thought of showing yourself telling these stories? i do really enjoy the fitting pictures that you have put in to go with the stories and i have wondered how you find so many pictures of such beautiful women. i used to watch mrBallen on youtube and he just shows himself telling the stories and adds pictures of story background. he has several million subs. i do love your stories and the way that you do the pictures also. i was just thinking about the differences. oh by the way i dont much watch mrballen anymore because he has went too far to the witchcraft side.

Just look at the huge trees that once stood here in this country. It’s a shame that greed got them all cut down. I cut timber bout all my life and very few trees were even close to that size very few. I think about the big trees that I cut and sometimes it makes me sad it really does. The state of Tn is cutting off the state park here Standing Stone it looks awful but I’ve not seen the first dime put back in the park system here.

Is this based on another story? I knew this story, from the time it got to the knowledge that she was free to live life on her own terms, right to the end.

I’m confused. Is this not just a retelling of Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Story of an Hour?”

Those are Bottle Gourds, with openings cut for Purple Martins to make nests inside. They are painted white, as the shade which attracts these birds. Even in our time now these can be sold in shops. As ñests for Purple Martins, they are placed on poles, up too high for cats to reach them

Hi JD! How sad and an ending I didn’t expect. The children really breaks my heart.
I know my grandfather was a dynamite man in the Kentucky coal mines. I was told when I would go to my grandparents house and my grandfather was not there, but told he was working. I never remember my grandfather ever speaking of the months he spent in the coal mines or anything about what happened.
He was always a quiet man. I’ve often wondered what his eyes had seen.
Thanks for this story of Tom, Sarah and the sitting chair.
    Have a blessed weekend!

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller • Ohhh I can just hear the wheels and gears of your brain turning and I imagine your ears perked up, and your eyes lit up when you read what could be the title (The Dynamite Man) to a new Appalachian story added to the already fabulous collection of stories. I can’t wait to hear it.
