Great story! I have visited no business creek in big south fork. Nearly stepped on the biggest rattlesnake I ever saw poking around those old foundations. That's about the time we realized we had no business messing around that place!
Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Since I, too, have hiked all over No Business in the Big South Fork, I just had to determine if this took place on the TN side of the Appalachian, or if it was somewhere else. Turns out there is a No Business in NC, just northwest of Charlotte. Makes sense that such a great name like that would be in more than one state.
I remember back when family was brought home for the wake my grandparents would cover all the mirrors in the house. Being just a kid I never asked why cause children were meant to be seen, not heard. Another great story, JD! I see you knocking on the hundred thousand subscribers door and if you ask me it should be a million! Take care and God bless.
Spot on about the mirrors Scott! and "being seen but not heard" that was my childhood too... sounds like we grew up in the same house. And yeah- I NEVER dreamed that when my wife convinced me to start telling my stories on here, that 100,000 folks would subscribe. Im truly blown away and humbled. I appreciate everyone so much. And thanks for your comments, I always enjoy reading them.
My grandfather was in our house for his wake. The yard and house was filled with people. The children were sent out to play, but dad didn't send my out. I was 6 years old, had a little cold and very upset my pappy was dead. I knew without anyone telling me and I didn't want to leave him. Dad was afraid I would turn the casket over trying to see pappy, so he put a foot stool by the casket for me. All the women was in the kitchen making food, serving people and washing dishes. That was the first person I loves and could remember that had passed. Pappy had just been setting on the porch with me just the day or 2 before and I just had a hard time. But I sure understood what was happening.

This is an unusual story that I have never heard before. Most of the men, in my family, can grow a beard fast. However, most of them don't want one. You write and read fun, and interesting stories. I love the picture from the papers.
Thanks so much, I do my best to tell stories in a unique way that's all my own. Fun behind the scenes fact: When Sam was trying to shave and go beardless as a 20something year old, he would have to shave 3-4 times a day!!
Hi JD! What an interesting story and funny too. It seems some men around Tennessee still take pride in their beards. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed day!

Interesting story! I was afraid not only of à mishap at the sawmill but that the tonic might have caused hair loss! What a neat little addition to his fashion, the pocket for his beard! Such a novelty! It reminded me of when I was small, if my Daddy would shave off his beard in the spring--it was so different to see his face again after only seeing his beard for months. As a very young child it sometimes frightened me to see the change so dramatic, although everyone said Daddy was a handsome man. 😊
I was scared through the whole story that he was going to lose his beard at the sawmill (and the face attached to it). I wonder if his boys grew up with monster beards too?? Great story!❤

There is a place near the VA/WestVA border on route 606 before East River Mountain tunnel called 'No Business' for much the same reason as it was where Moonshine was made during prohibition days and where Pot was grown before the DEA used helicopters in the late 70s.
