We all have a choice to make, to choose good or evil.
Thank God for his long suffering he has towards people and the mercy and grace he gives us .
At the end of this story it was evidence of God's love and forgiveness he shows to each of us who will accept him as our savior.
    Thank you JD.

There is an argument as to whether men are born evil or made so by circumstance. But it begs the question: if some men are born evil, does that evil grows on its own or must it be nurtured. No doubt the circumstances of his childhood nurtured an evil in Tom Smith. That evil no doubt disguised itself as desperate self preservation when he was young. And later he nurtured it himself into ruthless self preservation and then cruel indulgence. But was he born so or, if circumstances had been different, could he have been as good as he had turned out to be bad? One will never know. Such men seem a whirlwind of chaos that dissipates leaving no trace but the damages and causing us more questions than answers.
I would not venture a guess as to whether he was forgiven. But, if he was indeed genuine in his last moments, I imagine it is possible. Guess we’ll all find out when we get there. Excellent story as always! Thank you!

In fact, we were not allowed to ask, 'Why?". These things happen over 100 years ago; but, the taint has stayed. Hopefully after my generation passes the taint will die with us. The boys living in poverty, that was my grand mother as a child, except they were sisters and brothers. The older ones would get a home ,and the 11 and 12 year old's lived there, then moved on to farms to work, or to be carer's for the elderly, nannies, that sort of thing. Mamaw moved in with a family age 11, and helped care for a sick elderly friend of the family, and was treated very well. . She took care of him, until he died several years later. From there right to marriage at 16, and then widowhood, at the age of 20. Many died of Appendicitis back then and thats what took him, . My Mamaw's third husband , a new 2nd grandfather to me, was orphaned at age 8 and ended up staying with his "uncle", barely fed, slept in the straw in the barn year round, under a tyrant ,that drove him all day, and didn't care one whit for him, he left age 15. Apparently that had been the deal , an indentured servant ,kind of thing. Some Uncle huh? Sadly this was not uncommon at all. One thing that has trickled down to this day, is family takes care of each other, and they are your best friends. I have worked hard for a living, but I had my child hood. I know my Mamaw felt like she had been grown up all her life and and so did he.
When my Mamaw met my real Papaw, the first thing she did was to get him out of the hills. The girls were all exceptionally smart, they read and educated one another., And so we settled in the foothills of the Appalachians's in Sunrise , Kentucky, that's where my Mom was born.
My real papaw was just a working man, he had been born extremely hard of hearing, so they kept him home, and taught him engines. he could do anything with a car or any piece of machinery. He loved the farm and he loved the country side. But was that enough for my Mamaw, who remembered trying to knock ole bitter apples off a tree, and crying because they couldn't get them to fall, thats how hungry they were. On to the Ohio River and ended up in Ft. Thomas Kentucky, where all the uppity people live. And dont ya know she settled right in there! Spoke just as well as any of those educated ladies, and demanded her children do the same. My Papaw went from saying "pass the taters" right directly to "Please pass the potatoes"" . She did this, and also suffered and lived through tuberculosis, and other serious ailments. She was a thin frail woman, but it never stopped her, not one bit.
She did it , all the children went to college, and speak like newscasters. Every single one of us! ( if I care to, sometimes I don't!)
We should know this is the way it was and people didn't sit around feeling sorry for themselves, they banded together and gained strength with each other. I have come to realize that here I am on the poverty level, but I am rich compared to others. Look I have this computer, vast storehouses of knowledge at my fingertips. My child hood dream of living at the city library is here! As a child I thought I could be happy forever there, where I could look up every question in the world I ever had. Now I am a Nana, imagine that! There's so many Mamaws as to get them confused these days! God Blessed and prospered my family and they worked hard and dreamed big. Opposites attracted and made it work for over 50 years! My real Papaw died age 62, I laid in his bed with his body and cried, he earned a peaceful death, gone in his sleep. And My Mamaw was widowed for the second time. She went on to marry again at age 62, met a man in church, and he was the sweetheart of her aged years, they were married 23 , extremely happy years. They waited on each other hand and foot.. and was an inspiration to me.
Guess how old I am now? And widowed long ago.

He had no guiidance as a child, came to the Lord on his own, and touched the lives of masses with his last words, and his legacy lives on with your wonderful storytelling.
