@@TheAppalachianStoryteller - Maybe better than the one I told my schoolmates after a visit down south; that it was so swampy and there were so many alligators I had to step over their backs to reach the school bus. Told it with such a straight face the teacher sent me to the principal's office. Fortunately Mother Superior had a little more background in the fine art of folk tall tales.

Thank you for this story. I had a new tin roof put on my trailer about a year and a half ago. You won't have anything worth keeping, if you don't have a good roof. I lost a lot of sleep worrying about saving enough money to pay for that new roof. Patching the old roof wasn't going to keep working forever. I've never heard this story before.

This reminds me of a man close to Beaumont Texas who trains large alligators for riding on their backs through the canals and swamps. I saw a picture of him riding on the back of a 14/ foot alligator in a magazine recently. So far he has trained 4 alligators.

I have a picture somewhere of a man with two bears harnessed up, pulling his wagon thru the mountains.. and he did it everyday for years!

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller i would love to see that picture. The man with the alligators says that most alligators start rolling in the water and are untrainable when that happens. I believe that it was 4 in total that he was able to train over the years. This man is a Cajun originally from Louisiana. He has dealt with alligators his whole life.

Thanks JD for another great story ! But I soon realized my knee boots weren't tall enough so I had to put on my hip boots because it was getting awfully deep on this tale.

Color me slow, but I didn't realize it was a tall tale until he put the bridle on the bear. The story was developed perfectly. For example, they didn't hear the bear because of the rain, and so forth. Bear ate so much pig he was sleepy and groggy. Brilliant!

I grew up in the very very south of New Zealand, ours is the last Airport before Antarctica and before Airplanes we were the last port before the big cold white... Up in the hills there were seasonal workers that made shine and had about 20 kids a piece.... I reckon we'd be kin folk to those mountain people....
