  • We set out to find a forgotten 200 year old cabin and cemetery, belonging to the uncle of Hatfield and McCoy feudist Randolph McCoy. John McCoy and his wife Margaret both died the same day and are buried in one grave. Ironically his Birthday is almost 235 years ago, 2 days from putting this video up. They are Poetically together forever spiritually and physically.

Very Nice video... John and Margaret McCoy are my 3rd great grand parents. John Buttermilk and Nancy are my 2nd great grandparents... I can tell you all of the info that you would like to know about the old cabin location if you'd like. I built the stone for John Buttermilk about 15 years ago, have only been back a very few times since then..
The property was a larger boundary back in those days. It was given to Old William McCoy by the government for his service in the Revolutionary War. It was then given to John McCoy (son)... John and Margaret McCoy left Brushy in the 1830s and lived around Hatfield Tunnel in WV until the beginning of the Civil War. Their son John Buttermilk moved back to brushy in the 1850s and built the log house and lived there. He sent for his parents John and Margaret when the civil war broke out. They lived there until their death. The old house and property was later given to buttermilk's son William Trigg McCoy... It exchanged hands afew times in the 20th century.... Feel free to msg me if you have any questions about the place and people. Thanks

Do you have any info on John buttermilk son George. George was my husband's great great grandfather. His name was George Washington Mccoy married to Elliza Jane. His daddy was born in pike County. We don't know much we have never had a family Bible. My father in laws mother pass away when he was a boy or young teenager. The woman are the ones that seem to pass down this kind of information.
      Thank you

On the tombstone of John Buttermilk McCoy's listed children is Harrison F. McCoy who is my great Grandfather. I would love to know where he is buried. and more about him. My grandmother died when mom was a toddler. Grandfather remarried and i did not know any of the McCoy family. Do you know anything about him or his kin?

@@nancystevens7447 I don't believe that they had school there, But with it being in such a rural area, they may have at one point in time.. It was lived in my many different families up until the 1960s. Including church services. The house and property was up for sale in the late 90s and was sold not long afterwards. The owner has intentions of fixing it, but I'm not sure if there will be any progress in the future or not...

Circuit riders were preachers who rode miles and miles to different churches on their circuit route, because many communities didn’t have preachers, so these men rode to one church one Sunday and another the next Sunday, and so on. I had 3rd, 4th and 5th great grandfathers who did this here in Kentucky, and they were Methodist preachers, so it must have been common for the Methodist organization. Happy Birthday Heather!

Couple of things on this video.
First, again, I would like to tell Miss Heather Happy Birthday. May God bless you with many more.
Secondly, it is ashamed that the old cabin couldn't have been found 30 - 40 years ago and be restored and preserved. That way, it would've stood another 100 years.
Timbers that built that cabin had to be 18 to 24 inches or more wide, cut down, hand hewn, hand cut joints, amazing huge trees. The add on, probably a kitchen was added much later, you could see that they were cut on a saw mill. Would've been a great old cabin.
Lastly, thank y'all for going all those extra miles to bring us these stories.
Leo, do me a favor being you're there and I'm here, give Heather a big Texas birthday hug, and I'll let you give her a big birthday kiss.
God bless y'all for all that y'all do. Stay safe out there on your travels.

Happy Birthday Heather! 🎂 🎉 Thanks Leo and Heather for taking us on this adventure. Too bad the gate was locked and the video came to an end. I really enjoyed the video and wanted it to keep going! Lol! 😄 That old cemetery was so beautiful and peaceful on top of that knoll. Man that cabin is just gonna disappear one day and the cemetery too. It's a shame it's like this everywhere. Hard to tell how many stones might have been completely covered over. I watch a guy who is uncovering stones that are completely covered over a foot deep or more with soil and grass. He was using a metal rod and poking down wherever he thought one might be and then digs down to it and puts a flag on it. He had found a bunch. I think it was a cemetery of an old mental hospital. Some had no markers at all. Find A Grave might appreciate this video. They are always needing people to take pics of cemeteries and graves to help people find their dearly departed or just see a pic of a marker if they live too far to travel. I hope you enjoyed your birthday Heather. 🎊 Leo your voice reminds me of a friend of mine and you resemble him too. It's funny how that happens. Lol! Heather you mentioned the Alleghany mountains, I have lived in the Virginia mountains my whole life. They are beautiful and I sure do love them. It's really a small world isn't it? I look forward to more adventures with y'all. Thanks! Have a beautiful blessed day. 🙏

Happy B-day, Heather, and thank you for looking for my ancestors' cabin and cemetery. I've been up Brushy Creek in the days before Google Earth, and I didn't even know if it had more than one way in and out then. My Maynard ancestors also lived on Brushy Creek near the Apple Orchard Old Regular Baptist Church and Cemetery in the early 1800s. Christopher Columbus Maynard supposedly built his first house there under a rock ledge on the opposite side of the road from the church.

    Hi,
    Nice video...as always...
There used to be a TV show called "The Barnbuilders" or so.
These guys went out, find these very old barns and restore them.
Sometimes they bought them, take them a part and rebuild them somewhere else as original. Very cool stuff...
I don't know if they still do it, but maybe you should check it out.
This log house would qualify for a historical restoration...
