- This is a small glimpse into some of the duties of a Broadway percussionist. Also because the percussion part was written more as a reference, it was a great opportunity to create the patterns and solos (Timbale Solo at about 3:30). The conductor, Kristen Blodgette, was very gracious in allowing me the freedom to do so.
I offer a performance clinic (A Glimpse Into the World of a Broadway Musician) that takes you from the moment your hired for a Broadway show to the very first performance. Visit daveroth.com to learn more about it.
A special thanks to Billy Miller (www.themillermachine.com) for filming and editing this video for me!
Love the tasty licks on the congas/bongos right after the timbales around 4:24. Nice work!
INCREDIBLE 🧨
Thanks Chloe!
LOVE LOVE seeing passionate musicians jam out! You’re on another level I’d like to get on one day! I’d be blessed having you play while I sing west side or evita! 🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️
Brilliant. Doing a full scale production in Norway this summer, and this has been a great inspiration. Great playing!
Excellent! loved watching you and listening to you as you play one of my favorite shows, played the percussion back when I was in college and wished I had known all you know about latin instruments back then.. Thanks for the lesson and fun!
Wow! Amazing job!
Does the cowbell rhythm at 5:02 have a specific name? I hear it all the time, especially on the agogo
Hi Steven. Yes that is called a cascara rhythm or pattern.
Absolutely stunning musicianship and fascinating to watch. I wondered though, how precise is your arrangement in notation - are you given any license to improvise which drums you use/the style of how you hit them? Or is what your playing exactly what is written down?
Hi Adam. Thank you so much for your kind comments. There was really only an outline of what the orchestrator intended to be played. That is customarily the case in show playing since notation in the latin genre is generally misunderstood. I created my own patterns dictated by what I thought the music required. The timbale solo was completely my own. The music director was very gracious to give me the freedom to create on a night by night basis. It was a blast!
Did you own all that percussion equipment?
That specific equipment is provided by the production.
Man...That was good! Stellar. Are your wrists and hands holding up ok? I was doing all kinds of oldie top 40 shows playing out 4 nights a week. I had bad luck tho forcing me to give up playing Excruciating right wrist pain from carpal tunnel. Oh well I had a 30 year run, That being said I know talent when I see it! You're really good
Thanks Larry. Unfortunately our Broadway run only lasted for 11 months back in 2012 so I have had time to recover. LOL.
iirc wsn't Kristen both Musical Director and Supervisor on Evita (like she is now with Cats)?
Yes she is Danny.
you are awesome!! are you on the 2012 cast recording?
Thanks Josh. I am on the 2012 recording.
@@DaveRoth What a wonderful accomplishment! Congratulations!
Is that Christina DeCicco singing?
Yes it is. She is amazing!
