- Filmed from the second Australian Semi-Amateur Production of Wicked. The percussion score for this show is fantastic and challenging, calling for 58 instruments and around 14 pairs of mallets. This setup mimics that used on Broadway, designed in a square configuration making use of scaffold truss for mounting aux percussion including the array of bells and shells, there are 3 microphones included in this setup.
Wicked is licensed by Hal Leonard Australia, all music and material shown in this film is under license from Hal Leonard and original material of Stephen Schwartz. Кино
This was not Broadway wow 5 videos in and I’m just finding this out. I thought the horns were a little off sometimes but everyone has off days. But this is super awesome.
I’m curious to know how long you had to practice to get all of this movement, switching instruments down. I love watching these!
Ah a lot and not a lot to be honest! Before this show, I had actually played the book before in a different production. In terms of preparation for this show as a sub though, I played through the book in it's entirety twice and then just focused on specific segments, like the xylo lick in dancing through life. Then I had two rehearsals with the section player in this setup before the show I covered.
Wicked is luckily one of those shows where the setup is basically the same everywhere, the instruments are grouped by what is played together and so this is one of the only setup styles for the show. The music is actually written that way too, Elpheba has specific sounds and so too does Glinda, so as a player you just know coming into that music piece that its for that character so you'll be focusing on those instruments. All of Glinda's aux percussion is mostly metallic and at the right end of the scaff with the vibes and xylo, Elpheba is always dark and earthy, so all of that is at the left closest to the timp and gong.
The only problem is .. this really heightens many.. many of the duff notes from the Brass......
Can't hear the brass over the in ears and the refraction from that wall of perspex, and if I could I would choose not to focus on it, you can spend your performance focused on everybody else's mistakes or on what is in your own control.
Excellent stuff!
This is so cool because you guys get to have a lot of fun down there. You guys try to be sneaky as well because nobody in the audience can see you lol!
Why is it in black and white
it's in night vision- pit is pitch black so a normal camera wouldn't work.
Is this in a below-stage orchestra pit or somewhere backstage?
We were in a dressing room backstage. We had full audio foldback including in ears for percussion and keys, and two video feeds of the stage. Worked really well, there were also two mirrors in the room to make seight lines a bit better although from inside the perc setup they were always going to be bad!
What's the small keyboard for?
Used for Crotales, the only instrument that wasn't available for loan for this setup! I think they were used maybe 3 times, but still makes a difference having the actual sound rather than doubling it on block or tubular bells
Why aren't you wearing shoes? xD lol
ddd8170 hahaha it's a long show!
