Regarding the establishment of Arkham City,it is explained that Hugo Strange approached Quincy Sharp,formerly the Warden of Arkham Asylum,with the proposal of Arkham City(Although we later find out that it was the plan of Ra's Al Ghul) As previously established in the tapes of Amadeus Arkham in Arkham Asylum, Quincy Sharp believed himself to be possessed by the spirit of Amadeus Arkham and was obsessed with cleansing Gotham of all criminals.Because of this and also the fact that Strange promised Sharp that if he greenlit the project of Arkham City,he could ensure that he would win the election and be elected as the Mayor of Gotham(by the help of the powerful friends of Strange which probably refers to Ra's and his League)which is why he allowed Strange to build Arkham City.
Plus strange had developed that mind control stuff which is how he had the tyga guards all under his control, if any governmnet official tried to stop Sharp and Strange I'm sure Strange could of brainwashed them too in order to get it built
The story has some big plotholes but i think it has a lot going for it, good pacing, cool setting, great characters, amazing soundtrack and fantastic presentation and voice acting
The Hugo Strange figuring out batman's identity is just kinda his deal from the comics. Not a great answer but you don't question how Venom works or how Freeze got his tech etc. It's kinda just kind of an instrinsic trait
I find the video above to be vary interesting. Some points that where stated I agreed with, and others I disagreed with. Most counter points I could bring up however, have already been written under the video in question. So for the time being, I will just let those other statements make those points for me. With that said however, there are still points about “Batman : Arkham City” that I feel need to be addressed. I intend to go over a few points that where not covered in the video above, or in a written statement below it. For I not only believe that the video got some things wrong, but it also missed some flaws as well. Let’s go over some of them, shall we? Let’s start with talking about Mr. Freeze. Now there are a few problems with him in this game, at least when it comes to the writing. So in the game, Mr. Freeze to show he “means business” brakes one of the cure vials. He then tells Batman that he will only let him have the other vial, if he saves Mr. Freezes wife (Nora) first. This is beyond dumb, yet it somehow gets worse. Batman then just tries to take the cure in front of Mr. Freeze. Wile Mr. Freeze is holding his freeze gun. How did ether of them think this would go well? To explain further why that scene is bad, let me show you how it should have went down. Mr. Freeze “The clown has my wife, bring her back to me.” Batman “I will, but I need the cure first. I can‘t do it in my current condition. If the Joker has your wife, then I'll need my full strength. That cure is the only way I can save her.” Mr. Freeze smacks his forehead. Mr. Freeze “Forgive me Batman, I wasn‘t thinking. Here you go.” Was that so hard? No matter what anyone says, that hole fight could have been averted if they just talked. Instead, Batman jumped the gun and made things worse. Speaking of, that brings me to the next flaw with the “Batman : Arkham City” game. Batman’s a jerk in the game! I mean it, he’s mean to everyone and lies when he doesn’t need to. Not to mention that Batman also makes such foolish choices in this game. A problem (if I might add) that wasn’t in the “Batman : Arkham Asylum” game. The Mr. Freeze scene from before is a good example of this, however there are many more. To show what I mean, let’s talk about Talia next. In the game, Batman fallows a ninja to Ra’s and Talia’s hideout. Once there, he meets with Talia. She sees him with out his mask (looking like a man on death‘s door) and asks what’s wrong. Batman then dodges the question and lies. He says he wants to become the new leader of the “league of shadows“ just so he can talk to Ra‘s. Similar to the Mr. Freeze example, why not just tell her the truth? She clearly loves him and doesn‘t want him to die. Why not do something like this example. Talia “Your face, what happened?” Batman “Talia, I’m dying. The Joker poisoned me, I need your father‘s help to make a cure. Please Talia, there isn‘t much time left.” Talia “Oh beloved, quick drink this! It will slow the effects of the poison. Open the doors, we need to see my father now! Hold on beloved, lean on me if you need to.” Now Batman may still have to fight Ra’s, but at least that’s his only problem in this example. People might say “These examples are outlandish and wouldn‘t have happened.“, however I don’t think they are that far from the truth. Sadly Batman did indeed lie in the game. As a result, Talia admitted that she felt hurt. Cut to later in the game, Talia helps Batman (in spite of the earlier heartache) because she still loves him. In her words “I had to save you”, she even says this as she hands him the cure. I say this because I think it proves my point. Leading her on and lying to her face was foolish, mean, and only made things worse. Speaking of “making things worse” let’s talk about Robin. In the game, Robin offers to help Batman in Arkham City. Batman refuses this offer and tells Robin to leave Arkham City. Saying that Robin is needed in Gotham, more then he’s needed here. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I disagree massively with this point. Arkham City is full of innocent people wrongly imprisoned, it would be nice having Robin there to help protect them. Considering Batman is a little busy trying to stop Hugo Strange, Joker, Ra’s, Penguin, Two Face, and so on all at once. plus (from a “game play” prospective) imagine if you could swap in between the two during the story. You know, like what they already did with Catwoman. So it’s not like it would be too hard for them to program that, because they already did it. Also (from a story prospective) there is something else Robin could do. What is that you might ask? Well let’s go on to the next flaw with the “Batman : Arkham City” game to show you what it is. Arkham City it’s self is a flaw. To explain what I mean, let me ask you this question. How many of you have rely taken a good look at the map? If not, why not do that now. See anything strange? If not, let me tell you. Notice how there are large walls and towers covering almost all of the city? Now my I direct your attention to the LARGE GAP ALONG THE WATER FRONT! There are no walls, towers, or even guards along the water front. How is there anyone even left in Arkham City, people could just build boats / rafts and escape unnoticed. This brings me back to my Robin point from before. Why not have Robin help evacuate all of the innocent people using the Bat-boat or Bat-sub? That would be a wise choice, considering the large critical flaw in Hugo’s defenses. I don’t know how anyone built this map for “Batman : Arkham City” (with this large of a flaw) and gave it the ok. Why not just put Arkham City in the heart of Gotham, with large walls and towers on all sides. If they had just done that instead, there wouldn’t be a problem. But no, instead the map it’s self has a hole. Both in terms of the plot and literally. With all that said, I believe I have covered all I can for now. most of your issues with the story actually get explained in the comics and interview tapes. like for example it’s explained how penguin kidnapped freeze in the penguin interview tape, or how strange knows how batman is bruce wayne is explained in the comics

Finally someone who calls out everything wrong with city. Imo this game is insanely overrated and the best things are maybe riddler, Hush, clayface, mad hatter, freeze fight, and the easter eggs. There's so much wrong with this game and purists make it seem as if it's the perfect game when it's not even close. Imo the league of assassins ruined the game. Hugo strange is a threat as it is and then you have ra's coming in at the end
Wrong, many games with heroes don't have bad writing. Let alone the level of bad writing that is in the "Batman Arkham City" game. Granted the video above got some things wrong, however it did get quite a bit right. All in all, there is never a good excuse for bad writing.
lol, the reason you can’t find many videos criticizing the game’s story like you did is bc most of your criticisms are awful nitpicks. I agree that the story can be a mess at times and turns into a wild goose chase a bit, but your issues with it are either A: answered elsewhere in the game (like cutscenes, random dialogue characters have, character bios, the audio tapes, or just basic Batman lore - like Hugo knowing he’s Bruce Wayne). Or B: are grounded in reality and not a superhero world, where conveniences happen. The game is based on a rich dude with limitless resources at his disposal dressing up in a bat-like costume and fighting crime to avenge the loss of his parents. That in itself is ridiculous. So criticizing how ridiculous some of the things in the story are and passing them off as bad is just reviewing the game in bad faith. Rocksteady and Paul Dini did a really good job of explaining why things are the way they are in the Arkhamverse. They make sense for a comic book video game.
