  • Batman Arkham Knight is a game I went from absolutely loving, to kind of hating, to absolutely loving again. This video is meant to chronicle how and why I came to these conclusions as we wrap up the Arkham Retrospective.

Despite the Story, you cannot deny that Knight's combat is the absolute PEAK of their system, I'm still finding out new mechanics to this day, like as Red Hood, if you throw a stun grenade at an enemy from a distance and then start tapping the Punch button, he'll start doing a long ranged Beatdown.
And lets not forget the graphics, this game came out eight, EIGHT YEARS AGO and still looks better than most games coming out today.

Honestly, I liked the story, for the most part. It wasn't bad IMO, just predictable. The Batmobile sections were used too frequently, the Riddler making you do races was absurd, and the way some plotlines from the previous games were mishandled was annoying. But those are all minor issues for me. The game was damn fun, the story was entertaining and did some new things that were really cool.

The Arkham Knight obviously being Jason Todd was an understatement. People predicted his identity before the game even came out with all the Red Hood promotional material.

      @batmabel 11 месяцев назад +79

The worst part is that they kept lying and lying that he was definitely not Jason Todd, but a "completely new character". Being predictable would be a much lesser sin than just being a liar, imo.

      No boss fights
      500 too many tank battles
To say the arkham knight twist was predictable would be an understatement
Redesigns of nearly all the characters are worse than what they were on city. To add to this, that's not even remotely similar to how scarecrow has been characterized and portrayed previously and feels like a different character completely
Enough with the joker already Jesus Christ he doesn't have to be in every story in all Batman related media
      But, there are some positives:
      Traversal, specifically gliding
      Combat
      Gadgets
      The city of Gotham itself
The game is long enough with all the most wanted missions and DLC even before you go for new game+
Some of the different villains are also featured like Man Bat whom you don't see too often. In fact I wished his segment was even longer
Overall it's not as good as City but a little better than Asylum. It's frustrating because they could've just binned 90% of the tank battles and used Deathstroke instead of Arkham Knight from the start. Minimal effort for those changes and the game would've been a lot better

One of the most under-appreciated masterpieces in gaming. I think Knight is a perfect example of that category of game where, as a sequel, it didn't add as much as people wanted; but as a culmination of the series' game design it's actually peak. I found the Batmobile to be a nice change of pace. The tank shootouts can get hectic and the Riddler races were also pretty fun.

I honestly feel like this game could have benefited greatly from not taking place over a single night. The gimmick of each game taking place over one night was already starting to show problems with Arkham City, but it really hurt this game's story IMO. Especially since Spider-Man PS4 let itself take place over a couple of weeks and managed to balance three main villains a lot better than this game did. I'd also love to see a Batman game make better use of the Bat Family, I too was hoping for full on mini campaigns for the other characters, especially Nightwing. Ah well, I've still played this more times than I can count, same as the other Arkham games.

Arkham Knight is still my favorite game in the series. I've got almost 200 hours in it and I still love it to this day. Replayed both it and City back to back in the last 2 weeks. Yeah it's bosses kinda suck and the Jason Todd reveal + his "redemption" weren't handled too well, but everything else? Love it. The story outside of Jason is great. Scarecrow is a good villain, Batman's battle with his inner fear is very compelling, and Joker is really well used.
But above all that, it's just the best gameplay experience in the series. From the combat, to the stealth, to the traversal and the open world. Hell I even like the tank battles. I completely cheesed the Deathstroke fight by hacking another tank and it single handedly melted his health bar.
Fuck the NG+ tho. Forcing a higher difficulty is lame. I ain't doing that just for a slightly cooler suit. Especially when I already got better suits like the Asylum, Earth 2 and 70s suits.

Arkham Knight, while not a perfect game, is still an amazing one. Like you said J, Arkham Knight gets a lot right, superb combat, excellent graphics, great voice acting, etc. But what it gets wrong is very apparent. The Batmobile is amazing to drive, but the other stuff about it is so overabundant. And the Jason Todd twist was handled quite poorly. I overall didn't mind Joker's presence in the story but can see why it's a gripe some fans have, especially after the Origins. Plus, it did take away a lot from the villains.
Overall, Arkham is a well-made, polished game brimming with content, it just does not hit the same highs established by first two games. As someone who's 100 precented it, I say it's not some big disappointment, it just doesn't stick the landing like it could have.

Another fair review. Honestly I agree with you in regards to not getting too hyped for things. I've had that experience before with other games. Usually I'm just really excited. I also 100% Arkham Knight years ago and honestly I really enjoyed it. It had a couple of miss steps and I remember fighting Deathstroke with the Bat tank and thinking, "Really?" I enjoyed a lot of the Batmobile segments and it was cool to drive around, but the over use of it did bring my enjoyment down a bit. That said, I still remember being blown away by the final mission playing a FPS as Joker and being absolutely terrified of those Batman statues. I also enjoyed the Riddler stuff as well. I still remember the visuals and loving the multifear takedowns. The game was just a ton of fun to play and really in a lot of ways, I think that's what a game should be. It should be equal parts a satisfying story and a fun time to play. I've played many games where the story is very lackluster, but super fun to play and vice versa. When a game just isn't fun to play, that's when I usually put it down and don't return to it unless I'm curious about the ending of the story. But then it's just a chore to sit through just for that. Looking forward to Gotham Knights! I never bothered to play it since friends of mine told me it wasn't good and I have other games on my mind right now

The psychological aspect of this game is why it’s my favorite out of the Arkham series. Bringing back Joker as Batman’s inner critic was awesome, and the entire end sequence is one of my favorite in gaming

I did a big turn around on this game over the years. At launch on PS4 I was very let down by it and didn't like it but I replayed the goty edition or whatever with all the dlc on PC last year and loved it. The combat is so fun.

For all its flaws and imperfections, I still feel like this game was an excellent example of the amazing duo that was Kevin Conroy (RIP) and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker. It may not have been their final performance together in those roles, but they both killed it in their performances and this game felt like a satisfying finale both to the Arkham series and to a version of those characters that stretched back to the animated series from my childhood.

Arkham Knight was also the game that made me upgrade to a PS4. I remember scrapping together money and saving as much as I could so that I could pre-order the PS4 bundle that came with Arkham Knight. I remember there was also a special edition PS4 that was silver with a black Batrman silhouette on it and I wanted that, but it was $50 more and I couldn't afford it at the time.

I finally picked up and played this on Steam a few Months back, and I loved it. When they first showed a Clip of the Arkham Knight I knew then and there is was Jason. The issue with Jason is his Story is so well known by anyone who follows the Comics thats its impossible to not Spoil him.
The thing is I dont feel it ruined the Story that it had to tell with him. They did a great job showing the Emotional Scars it left on Batman, thus why he was perfect for Scarecrow to use as a Tool of Fear with Batman. It didnt matter if Batman beat the Arkham Knight, because once he found out who he was the damage was done.
One thing I loved was that this felt like a Batman who was one step away from becoming the Batman Who Laughed. Honestly I wish that his Origin has been just that, a version of the Arkham Trilogy where he failed and the Joker took over.

    My personal favorite Arkham game.
While I do think that City is "better" as a whole, with a better campaign, story, pacing, etc., I still do love the gameplay of Knight more.
    Even the tank battles.
When I treated those like an old-school arcade game, they became a lot more fun, surprisingly enough.
One thing I wanna talk about when it comes to the story, though:
I don't remember where, but I read/heard somewhere that the Arkham Knight was originally supposed to be Hush, but was then changed to Jason for reasons that I'm not currently aware of.
Ever since I discovered that, I have always wondered how the game would've been like had that been the case.

Arkham Knight honestly is one of those games that when it first came out it was a bit of a disappointment. But it’s aged well and I find it much better years later. Especially with the lack of good superhero games out rightnow. Other than the insomniac spiderman games.

Here’s some cool/heartwarming Trivia: this was the first video game and one of the first pieces of media to credit Bill Finger for his role in creating Batman
It had been an open secret that the credited of Batman Bob Kane didn’t contribute anything besides the name and basic concept of a vilgilante dressed as a bat, everything people latched onto about the character came from Finger and Kane stole credit.
While Kane unfortunately has to remain credited for legal reasons it’s nice Finger at least got his due

The "villains teaming up" is another disappointment. Like what's different? We're still taking each villain down one by one regardless. Maybe if there was a mob fight in which the mob was all of the human-level strength villains ganging up on Bats that would be something.
Of course that would mean not having a bazillion separate side quests in a game I felt had too damn long of a main story. Ohhhhh, can't be having that!

  • @randominternetweirdo5479

My least favorite parts are the Bomb parts in Founder's Island with the lock on missile shooting drones on a bridge that are hard to shoot. This is where tank hack feature comes in most useful.
My other least favorite bit is actually the two times Arkham Knight is in vehicles, his vehicles are stupidly fast and it's easy to lose against him. The tunnel chase scene is annoying in that the dust caused by Jason's driller is a pain when it covers the view and his driller shatters your car because you can't see the obstacles in your path and you can't evade them.

I will always chuckle when I see those interviews where the devs talk about how the Arkham Knight is an original new character
….and a few years later DC would actually make an original character called the Arkham Knight with no relation to Jason Todd. And who honestly has a better claim on the name given both a personal connection to the Asylum and they style themselves after an actual Knight, with swords, shields and all that stuff instead of paramilitaries

This game is astounding if you take a close look at it. The story is incredible especially in its peak, the graphics are breathtaking for their time and even in 2023( games like elden ring, Assassin's creed Mirage, and Hogwarts legacy don't have graphics like these), the combat is not challenging but it requires a synchronization and reflexes level. The most controversial thing (maybe the only one too) in this game is the batmobile. At first (before I played the game and in the first 2-3 hours of gameplay) I wasn't really much of a fan but while I was getting through the game I really liked it. Small spoiler alert: The addition of Joker in Batman's head after being exposed to the fear toxin is so amazing. It achieves everything the developers wanted. Has to be in the top 3 of Superhero video games

16:49 There's Albert King, the final battle with the Arkham Knight, Professor Pyg, Riddler, Killer Croc in Season of Infamy, Black Mask in Red Hood's DLC, and Joker and Harley in A Matter Of Family. I definitely wish there were more standard boss fights, but it's a bit misleading to say there's none.
