Is Batman Arkham City Still That Good?

- The legacy left behind by Batman Arkham City, first released in October of 2011 is one of a true lightning-in-a-bottle sequel. One that takes a foundation people liked and produced a sequel so good that it makes the original look like a prototype. A game that received near-perfect scores across the board, sold millions of copies, and netted dozens of awards for the best game of the year. So the main question with this video I want to explore is this: Is Arkham City still that good? Is the game still the near-perfect score masterpiece it was back in 2011, now that the superhero action genre has taken so much inspiration from this game? Well…let’s find out!

Insomiac Spiderman says hellow
@@KazzujinInsomniac is ight. It borrows a ton from Arkham and doesn't do anything really remarkable.
@@Kazzujin nope that game is woke trash
How is Spider-Man woke?
Mr Freeze fight also has the most drastic changes according to the difficulty. If you play on easy or normal, Oracle will send you data that shows different types of takedowns to defeat Freeze. On Hard, that isn't available and Freeze gets more health. And on Hard+, Freeze gets even more health and he will shut down your detective mode if you use it for more than 8 seconds
You know…every time I play this game, I remember there being a takedown list for freeze and never understand why it’s not there when I play. Now I know it’s because my first run in 2012 was on Easy mode lol
@@JsReviews i love how Cain and Abel Introvert with the story ESPECIALLY THE CLIFFHANGER ENDING.
Yas
@@JsReviewsyeah I forgot it showed a list, the reason why was because I played it on hard
@@JsReviewsI first played Arkham City on Wii U, but I never played it on hard. When I got the game on Xbox-one a few years later, I played on hard mode for the first time & was confused as to why the list didn't show up. After a few more play throughs, I just chalked it up to the list being one of the new gamepad features introduced in the port. Finding out it was there the whole time blew my mind and I have your video to thank for that.
This games is so good. A perfect follow-up to Asylum. I love how big the map is, the optional objectives are all fun, the Mr. Freeze fight is really fun and engaging, and I like how they brought Hugo Strange into the mainstream. Plus we get the best Catwoman A really great time.
Agreed

Yes and when spider-man 2 comes out they will be greater together
@@thegreatacolyt1277didn't age well. Spiderman 1.5 same game
The side quests suck, only good side quest was riddler, every other one was so short and irrelevant or repetitive as hell.
I love that Arkham City's world is very small and compact, but very (content) dense, that to me is the best open world/level design. I hate vast, almost empty, no-level design open worlds that take forever to traverse and quests/missions/the story makes you go from one side of the giant map to the other.
The Yakuza games do the same thing.
Small maps but packed with endless stuff to do.
@@Hilversumborn The small map is a big factor.
@diamond_dogs Yes that too absolutely. The most important part of the world design is to differentiate the level design.
I agree. It's also one of the reasons why I couldn't get into Zelda: Breath of the Wild or it's sequel because of how massive the world's are and doing all those stuff takes forever. I know many people enjoy these kinds of stuff. But not for me.
@@jaretco6423 I have always prefered small, compact, dense worlds. Big ones are good when they are also semi-dense, skyrim for example, but worlds like GTA or Ubisoft open worlds for the past 5-6 years have been torture.
Missions/Quests make you go from one side of the map to the other, and that takes forever and you spend 80-90% of your game time traveling from point A to point B, it's absolutely annoying, either that or a loading screen, but if I have to fast travel, what's the point of the open world?
And when you have a marker on a map with your objective, you tunnel-vision your way to the objective, ignoring the open world, at which point again, what's the point of the open world?
Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Morrowind and similar games are the type of open/semi-open world that I truly enjoy.
Arkham City is so damn good. Literally as perfect of a sequel as you could possibly want.
It continued with how Intense Arkham asylum was
@BoxingisgoatedBoxingisgo-sy7jy wrong
As someone who bought this game way back then when it was fresh & new, I have to say: it was an absolute delight! Batman Arkham City had it all. The gameplay, story, acting, replay value, & optional content. Not only did it cement itself as the best superhero game of all time for me and a lot of people, but it cemented itself as one of the best games of that generation period! And that says a lot when going up against games like Skyrim, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, and many others! There's just something about this and Asylum that's truly magical.
I couldn’t put this game down the first time. One of the greatest sequel experiences I ever witnessed. This game was dangerously addicting because of how good the gameplay is. I was even obsessed solving riddles too. Combat was hella satisfying.
Arkham city is one of my favourite games. While I can admit Arkham Knight has a lot going for it in that the maps bigger, the combat & stealth are more challenging & give you more options, I still prefer city. Mainly because the campaign & story are better but I’m more used to it & it’s easy to go back to
It also doesn't have those awful batmobile combat section that picks up more than just playing Batman himself.
@@jaretco6423Batmobile is only 20% of the game, it definitely doesn’t take up than playing as Batman
@@charlesmeniru5082 Eh. I think it's more than 20%.
@@jaretco6423it’s the only reason I hate Arkham knight if it had regular Batmobile missions/gameplay mixed in with the world gameplay and graphics instead of world of tanks it would have been amazing
@@jaretco6423
What % of the game would you say the batmobile is?
For me, it’s One of the greatest games of all time & my favorite installment of the Arkham series. Never before had I ever played a game & felt blown away watching the end credits scroll down my screen. Arkham City was the first game to do that for me, where I really said “Whoa, what did I just play?”
Truly an amazing experience, and I’ll always have a special place for the Arkham games, City especially
I personally prefer asylum over all of the future games mostly because of the atmosphere being kinda creepy and also it is doesnt make u feel overwhelmed with content
Asylum isn’t overwhelming whatsoever and that’s what makes it so entertaining and enjoyable, but after playing it for 15 hours+ there’s nothing more that you can really do, just the trivial things that you’ve already done many times
I have replayed arkham city at least 5 times, and it still remains one of my favorite games, and it remains exciting no matter how many times I play it.
5 times dam you definitely sound like you love it lol
Agreed, every year or so I come back to replay the game and have almost the same fun and excitement as the first time I played
Still a masterpeice. One of my favorites of all time.
Not a masterpiece

@@orangecrusader1177 what are you talking about
If you have never read No Man's Land, you need to. THAT I think is the biggest inspiration to this game
Really looking forward to your review of Arkham Origins. That game was definitely underrated when it first came out. More recently however people have gone back to this game and have praised it for its great story and amazing performances and it has in my opinion the second best story in the series with the first being Arkham City. It also has the best and most accurate depiction of Bane ever outside the comics. They really maneged to expertly portray Bane's intelligence as well as his struggle and addiction with Venom.
I really enjoyed the story of both games
Origin had so much potential
I loved Origins.
My only issues with origins were how they made joker the main villain instead of black mask, recycling side content from City and how they sidelined Slade after one fight. Apart from that I loved it, even finished it on "I am the Night" mode
Criminally Underrated. Always Nerdy's Retrospective on the game is great. i recommend that you check it out.
My only issue with this game is that the story is actually kind of short. It took me around 5-7 hours to complete it
I’d take that over a bloated one that’s only long cuz it feels it has to be
@@GORILLA_PIMP ok
8:25 I only discovered the ability to use the slide to quickly enter vents when I played Arkham Origins and then realised I could also do it in Arkham City.
I completed the AC story a dozen times from the time the game got released till today....
HOW COME I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THAT?!
It always bugged me that at the end of the game he carries Joker out not Talia...
Made no sense to me.
This game is so good Joker’s death shocked me at the end the side missions are the best part definitely one of the best Batman games 🔥
Still the best Arkham game:
1) City
2) Knight
3) Asylum
4) Origins
AND ALL OF THEM ARE GOOD OR UP. None are terrible or bad games
Tiny correction for the Return to Arkham collection. The games originally ran at a unlock framerate(don't remember if it was for PS4Pro/Xbox One X only or not) but due to how unstable the framerate was, it was (sadly) patched to locked 30FPS for all versions. If you play the physical version unpatched on a PS5 for example, you can get a locked 60FPS.
I wonder if you can do the same for the series X
@@rogercolon619 there’s a way of doing it on Series X too if you have the physical copy of Return to Arkham
@@rogercolon619If you play the game offline without a patch you get it unlocked. Unfortunately I bought Return to Arkham digitally because it was like $20 before PS5 was ever announced but I wish I waited for that solid 60 fps and I wish they'd patch it back if they aren't gonna remaster or remake the games again
I think the thing that makes this the best Arkham/Batman/DC game for me is how well it balanced great gameplay and a great story, Asylum’s gameplay I think still holds up well, but it does feels kinda dated though the game has maybe my favorite story of the series, meanwhile Arkham Knight definitely has my least favorite story that, while not bad, definitely could’ve been much better, but has easily my favorite gameplay of the series, and while this game isn’t my favorite in those categories, it managed to balance it out better than the other two which just made it better if you ask me
My issue with Knight's narrative is that the stories in the side missions were considerably more engaging than the main story. If not for Hugo Strange being tied to Ra's Al Ghul in City, that side mission surrounding him in Knight would have served better as the main story, but hey...it is what it is.
This game is simply a masterpiece. There’s flaws here and there, but overall quality is just ridiculously high. And I always liked how this game manages to be the most serious and the most funny at the same time
Sorry but this game is not a masterpiece
@@ethanfullerton1620 oh yeah, I completely agree. Every single argument that said it is a masterpiece is now dismissed
@@sizar9003 the only masterpieces in this series are asylum and origins
@@ethanfullerton1620 good news, I definitely tell everyone
Played Arkham City for the first time last year and man this game holds up incredibly well
Man, it’s real weird seeing Deadshot from a pre-SS 2016 game
Almost close to 200k subs, J. And what better way to get close to that goal than discussing the Arkham games? Proud of you, bro.
Almost close to the side on one Word or the other
3:41 I love how during the Sonic Reminiscent series by Shadow759 the entire backstory of G.U.N City was literally just the plot of Arkham City.
Dude i legit did not know you could slide thru grates until ur video, WOW. I learn something new every time i go back to these
With the quick fire system I love it so much in combat because that is SO BATMAN.
This game is as close to perfect as it can get. It had a very high bar to meet and actually made its previous game which was on its own genre defining and made it look obselete. Seriously theres never a reason to play asylum with city in your pocket
Bro all the vid's you make are of the things i like! batman, tmnt, sonic. i love how in depth you go and watch al your hours long video compilations. keep it up!
the only bad thing was collecting all those riddler trophies for no pay off
Picked this up for $2 on 360. Definitely look forward to playing this after hearing all the praise. They don't make stuff like this anymore
The best alternative costume in this game was the Sinestro Corp costume and it's nuts to me HOW LONG that stayed exclusive to buying the Green Lantern bluray.
Glad I had it but then it wasn't available at all for YEARS, even as dlc.
Spoiler alert: yes it is.
This game comes from an era which I think is the current peak of gaming. Huge variety and innovation, great production value but short time between announcements and release dates, and only a couple of years between one release and the next in the series. There was also less trouble with studio greed, such as the micro-transactions and milking of titles for years with online play that plague the market today.
I still like Asylum more. It's far more atmospheric and has a comic book feel that Arkham City has much less of ir doesn't have at all. Also Batman got noticeably weaker in City, which I didn't like, despite the people he was beating up in City also looking weaker than before. It took longer to take down normal goons than in Asylum for whatever reason. Luckily they made him stronger again in Knight.
It's still a great game but IMO - Asylum was better. To be clear - I didn't play any of Arkham games as a kid and discovered the trilogy just a year ago and played one after another, so nostalgia doesn't cloud my judgement about this, Asylum just seems like a better game.
P.S. about the explosive gel mechanic you praise in this video - I was actually really annoyed how they removed the automatic explosion upon detection of enemies, as I used that all the time in the first game. Story-wise, it makes no sense for Batman to get rid of this incredibly useful technology.
My favourite game of all time. It fully deserves all of its praise
I'm glad you acknowledged the remasters being arguably inferior to the originals. Most people and video essayists seem to take them for granted as a modern, convenient way to access the games. Then they'll go on to critique whether or not the graphics still hold up, saying things like "Batman's face looks derpy in Asylum" even though it's purely the remaster being botched.
The remasters paint the games in a more negative light than they deserve, when in reality they hold up incredibly well as they are. It saddens me that most people getting introduced to the series now are going to experience the "remastered" edition.
As a side note, I think the fact that Return to Arkham never came out on PC speaks to the developer/publisher actually being aware that the remaster doesn't compare to the original, maxed out, PC versions.
The Game Of The Year version was AWESOME 👌 👏 😎 🙌 I loved using the Batman Beyond suit or the yellow lantern suit, also thankfully the boss battles didn't have endless waves of henchmen like asylum did.
I honestly much prefer Asylum but honestly City still kicks ass
Besides Atmosphere what does Asylum do better than City? It definitely aint the boss fights or having a better ending to the story
This game added lots of twists to Batman's story but I think the telltale Batman games did a lot to change the status quo too so maybe after your finished with Arkham you check that out too
I love some of the little details in this game like how you can hide from Two face in the court house and using DV to see "Jokers" lack of a skeleton
Yes
its a banger when J uploads hoooly
I am replaying the saga all over again. I love this trilogy.
after 10 years i didnt know you could slide through the wall vents
Another great video dude
You just earned yourself a sub 😁
For it’s time. I preferred the claustrophobic feel of asylum tho. Suits Batman better imo
My favourite combo move set was using the explosive gel quick fire / detonation than using the multi-batarang takedown, can easily takedown 8+ thugs at once.
22:28 Batman's problem solving skills in this game are second to none!!
Short answer: Asylum wins for atmosphere but City wins everything else.
This right here is the definition on how you continue a damn sequel.
A true superhero sequel, man.
*Legendary...*
I have faith in insomniac games falling into the same position in october, when Arkham City released on October of 2011.
I love the angle of this discussion
I still stand by my theory that the Arkham games mirror the Dark Knight Trilogy
Asylum/BB - Perfect introduction to a series, introduces the feel, environment and darkness of the world and sets things up perfectly for the future
City/TDK - Blockbuster entry, best of the series by a country mile, elevates everything from the 1st entry to an entirely new level
Knight/Rises - Slightly disappointing ending, villain in a mask who knows who Batman is, ends with the “death” of the Batman
good game design is that as soon as you said "the explosive gel" I did the muscle memory for L1 + X does the combat version of it
Hey J would be cool if you would make a video of the Zero collection!
I found this video as an ad from the search bar lmao
the answer is yes
yes it is
Would you also consider also reviewing the animated film Batman: Assault on Arkham which is supposed to be in the same continuity as the Arkham games?
That film is not a continuation of the Arkham series. They just said that to make more money.
I have played all the Arkham games way too many times lol.
But love Arkham city and love the video man. Just found your page and like the extensive review of this amazing game.
Can’t wait to see your Arkham knight vid, personally I think I like it more than a lot of other people. The batmobile wasn’t an issue for me
Btw not sure if you realised, but I loved how Killer Croc and Black Mask make an appearance in the base game.
Just recently replayed this game when the $4 sale for the Return to Arkham bundle was put on the PS marketplace, and I even decided to go for 100%. A lot of positive things to say about it: The combat still holds up and is very simple with enough different enemy types to keep me engaged, the Riddler trophies were not nearly as bad to get as I once thought, and the map is very easy to navigate. On this go-around, I managed to find a good majority of the Riddler trophies without having to look up a guide.
The ONLY negative thing I can really say about this game is that the traversal feels significantly slower than Arkham Knight's, which I'd say isn't even a fair critique because it's an older game on older hardware, the map is much smaller, and the traversal did not feel slow to me when it originally came out. Arkham City gets a 10/10 from me, and that's not an easy score to get.
heres a tip about arkham knight, you can switch the batmobile battle mode from hold input to toggle input, but only after the first tank battle.
Small correction, quickfire gadgets were in Asylum, but because of the limited gadget pool and quickfire gadgets not really being used in gameplay that much in Asylum, people don't even bother to use them. I'm pretty the tutorial pop-up for the quickfire batclaw doesn't even appear in the maingame and only appears when you start a combat challenge.
Someone posted a video on how to tell which one is the real Joker. The real Joker would call Batman "Bats".
Couldn't even finish Arkham City because I was so bored with it and I hate open world games. Arkham Asylum before it felt like a much better game and it being basically a metroidvania.
I actually think the linearity of asylum makes it more effective of a game than city
Good video, I'm still playing through the game.
One thing I will say though is I don't think we see eye-to-eye when it comes to remasters. Sure, there are some that aren't as good as they could've been, some that are meh and some that are just bad. But then there are others that keep up what made the original releases great and ones that actually improve the games. Like yeah, there are some that are unnecessary, especially if it's on a system where the older versions of the games were backward compatible anyway. But I just feel like these games on PS4 and Xbox One were fine remasters. A better example of remasters done right is Portal The Companion Collection on Switch. I didn't think they'd actually give the games 60fps on Switch, but they did. They aren't games that are extremely demanding or anything, but I've seen games that could easily have worked with improvements on Switch, but just didn't. Anyway, I think remasters are fine, as long as they're done right and I feel like a lot of hard-core fans of certain games make mountains out of molehills when it comes to most problems with remasters.
all i’m saying is Riddler Trophy’s are 100x better side quests than unlocking pieces of a map by climbing a tower
8:24 am i the only one that didn’t know u was able to slide through grates 😭
11:25 How do you roll over like that when you reach the rooftop?
i always come back to play this, it’s that good
I'm still playing this too this day
2011 was fire, Batman Arkham, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, etc.
I just started this game after finishing asylum and omfg, wow it just hooks you right away
City is hands down the best Arkham game of the series, the best Batman game overall and one of the greatest games ever made. It does everything so perfectly on how an Batman game would be and it does it so well. Even if the likes Origins or Knight does do some improvements from City's gameplay mechanics, it also sacrifices other things that City did it so well. Whether if the games were twice as big and nothing going on that felt like an waste of time, having unnecessary gimmick that felt exhausted or not cooperate the right amount of flow in many design choices. City just does all of them perfectly and it's the one game I never get sicked and tired of playing over & over again because it's that fun.
I played this along with Asylum for the first time last year. I can firmly say that they are still amazing
excellent video
Will you review Arkham Origins Blackgate with Arkham Origins? I'm curious to know what you think of that. I only played handhelds when I was younger so that was my only Arkham experience.
I remember when this game came out asking my friend Jared who worked at a video store(?!) at the time to save me a insert from one of the dvd copies of Green Lantern they got in because in it there was a code to get the yellow lantern Batman suit for the game and I wanted it. j man came thru and anytime I replay the game I think “hey, Thanks”.
It's crazy that we got Arkham City, Skyrim, Minecraft and Dark Souls all in the same year.
My pops found this game on the bus, he sat down and wedged on the side was the game! He brought it home and my goodness, what a beautiful game!
I LOVED the design of this game. I mean that, its not the ultra photo realism you see in mordern games but that biting edge of the comics. Look how stupidly large Bane is, or the goofy perportions of Joker, or the fact they even have clayface, don't even get me started on how the world looks. its got such comic accuracy its just stunningly gorgeous. Not to mention they made a great redesign of Robin, I like the addition of giving Tim a hood, the armored Tee, boots and gauntlets while making his bo staff turn into a baton or shield? genius. While i loved some aspects of the batmobile in knight and had some fun playing it up until the cloud burst boss (never again), city still is the best of the trilogy.
Plus it also got Coheed and Cambria to write an original song: Deranged
One of my favorite forms of foreshadowing in this game is one of the calls the joker gives Batman and he says “if you want to hide something from Batman you stick it right in front of him” at first you think the joker is just being crazy and then when you find out the truth.
I didn't play the Arkham games until they released Asylum, City, and Knight as a bundle but I remember way back when GameStop had constant ads on TV about buying Arkham City and Asylum as a bundle and I thought Asylum was just a dlc. I never played them or seen someone play them but I still had the feeling that Arkham City was way bigger.
This is one of favorite video games of all time and every time I boot it up I enjoy it so much
Having just replayed all the Arkham games, I feel that City is good, and definitely a good sequel, but Arkham Knight is better. The gliding is better and faster, the combat and predator maps are more fluid, the graphics are phenomenal, even for todays standards. The only negative is the bat tank, but you can also roam the world in the other batmobiles, like 89, Nolan's, OG Arkham batmobile, the 60s batmobile, and even the BvS batmobile.
You can also play as more characters than ever: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Azrael, Catwoman, Red Hood/Arkham Knight, even Harley Quinn! Absolutely incredible.
Bat tank aint the only negative. The lack of boss fights compared to City and the story being more predictable than City are negatives too
23:00 Another disturbing thing about Strange. He got the Mad Hatter to essentially make up his mind control drugs he uses in the TIGER guards, who are actually just abandoned Arkham Asylum patients, and Quincy Sharp. He even had a hypnotic suggestion put into Sharp that when he was going to be questioned about Stranges involvement he had a vision if Strange telling him to kill himself. Sharp even saw him as his master and gladly gave up his free will for what he believed as influence that was worth it.
The mr. Freeze justification is perfect freeze demanded that Batman save his wife if he just ask nicely then it would have been unjustified
I wish I played these games in order, I started with knight so when I went back to asylum it felt so simple and lacking. For example when you couldn’t counter during a ground takedown. And then the way you had to unlock a lot of core mechanics of Arkham knight in asylum through the Wayne tech. This also applies to city. So if anyone is reading this and wants to play the games. PLAY ASYLUM FIRST!!!
No mention of Paul Dino’s writing or the soundtrack?
Playing through it again right now. With this playthrough I've noticed a few annoying intracities... holding the run button vs hitting the grapel button aren't very smooth. Enemies in large groups attack at various speeds and if there's a few with guns it can be annoying, if you take them out first they pick the weapon back up with frustrating speed.
It's still a great game. Top 5 easy.
I just bought the return to arkham pack, I've never played asylum but am working through it now and city is a game I played a lot as a child and was my introduction to Bat man as we know him today but I never actually beat it, because I got lost and didn't know where I was supposed to be going, hope I actually finish it this year.
The Arkham trilogy is coming onto the switch now but let’s see how that goes
I remember back when this hit absolutely demolishing it in something like a weekend, one of the few times in the last 15 years or so that a relatively longer game has done that to me. And then not long after Uncharted 3 so I was gaming good for those couple weeks on stuff that wasn't my usual RPG fare.
Arkham city was the first Batman Arkham game I ever played my parents got it for me for Christmas and I had no idea this was even a game or a sequel I was so excited to play it and I loved it played as Batman and catwoman and I absolutely loved playing as robin and nightwing which I both got as dlc bundle packs after months of asking my dad to buy it for me lol I never knew that there was a 50/50 chance to get either dlc character as a bonus when buying the game lol then my brother bought me the Harley Quinn’s revenge which made me sooo happy 😆
Got the return to Arkham trilogy 2-3 weeks ago for about a tenner. Great purchase Arkham asylum is my fav because of the atmosphere of the asylum but city was much better than I remember it being , playing Arkham knight for the first time and quite enjoying it tbh
I promised not to go back to it as it took up so much of my time 12 years ago
Looking forward to reuniting with this game in my switch
Arkham City was the first game in the series that I played and it was one of those games from my youth that I played the ever living hell out of.
No joke, this was my favorite game of all time until God of War (2018) came along, I loved it that much. I love just how versatile Batman is and just how useful his techniques and gadgets are this go around.
Yeah the Riddler stuff was WAY too bloated and Hugo Strange doesn't get too much time to shine in the campaign, but everything else about the game from the combat, stealth, traversal, and world exploration is so good that I can excuse any problems I may have with it.
All these years later and I still have so much fun and never get sick of playing with it.
18:56 Oh if you think the Batman Beyond suit looks cursed in 3D in this game just wait until Knight comes along.
