I was born the year Dolly released that song and Whitney was a star when I was still a child in elementary school, so she was definitely born several years before Dolly released it. Still, Dolly is amazing and an icon beyond definition.
Neither Dolly nor her mother knew for certain what happened to the original coat. They assumed it was passed down, till it wore out or was taken apart & repurposed. After the success of the song, Dolly's mother made a "near duplicate", from her memory & the school pic Dolly had taken in it (which only shows the front, upper area of the coat). The replica is on display in the museum at Dollywood, along with a fancier version from the movie.

That was all she knew and actually she was proud as a peacock to wear a coat to school that her mother had made for her because that made it extra special. I was raised very similar to the way Dolly was raised. We were as poor as church mice but what we did not want was for ANYONE to feel sorry for us and I'm pretty sure Dolly and her family would not want anyone to feel sorry for them either. They were "rich as could be" so if anything, people should envy her. Maybe when your child gets older she will understand that there is no reason to feel sorry for the little girl that was Dolly.

If you ever get a chance you really should visit Dollywood in Sevierville, Tennessee and make sure to go to the museum there to learn all about Dolly. We'd love to have you come visit East TN, one of the friendliest places on Earth. Dolly has given back so much to this state and the museum tells about this as well as showing her history through writings, instruments, costumes, pictures etc.

I'm not sure when this concert was given, but _Coat of Many Colors_ was released in 1968, 1 year after her career-altering debut on the highly-successful Porter Wagoner Show (a collaboration that lasted 7 years), and 2 years after she was wed to Carl Dean, to whom she is still married 56 years later! I was in the 3rd grade in a small KY classroom the year this song hit the airwaves, when the primary meaning of the iconic phrase to most people was still the Bible story and not the country song. Dolly was looked at somewhat askance back in those days by many people in the Bible belt, with her glamorous hair, make-up and clothing, but mostly because of her figure. Many folks, who ought to have known better than to engage in idle gossip and speculation, theorized just exactly how someone who looked like her was climbing the country music charts so successfully. Well, all those old naysayers and scolds (any who are left) have been proven wrong. Her sense of style, flair and _panache_ isn't scandalous. Never was (or at least, never should have been). So, the country music business (or any genre) wasn't always the friendliest place for beautiful women. And you know what? All that makes me respect her that much more. Dolly is fabulous. A bright light. You would like her collaborations with Linda Ronstadt, and Emmy Lou Harris as "Trio." There is a segment from a David Letterman show where they sang their version of Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush." No tricks just beautiful voices and perfect harmony.
My dad was and still is a country music fan. He would blare the stereo with Dolly, Glenn Campbell, Johnny Cash, etc. We didn't always love it then but I have grown to really appreciate how much of this stuff I know by heart and have fallen in love with all these years later.

The movie you are talking about was a made for TV movie that came out in 2015 called 'Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors'. It told the true story of her childhood with a pretty good cast. There was also a sequel called 'Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors'. Both worth watching if you love Dolly.

Beautiful song with a beautiful message. Note that she had the strength of character to persist in her belief in her mother’s gift of love, even as the other kids laughed. Did I always have that same level of strength and belief when other kids would make fun of me for not having the more expensive brand clothes growing up (I was one of eight, so we often had hand-me-downs, or store brands like Sears)? No, I didn’t (even though I loved my parents and family). Dolly’s message here really is deep, and puts such a wonderful focus on what is truly important. I wonder how many people this song has helped to persist in challenging circumstances, despite such a materialistic world all around us. It’s such a beautiful anthem of love and appreciation for a mother’s love.

We have our 150 acre farm with the dogs and the chicken but we have them for enjoyment now.. we don't need them to survive like his family did back in the day.. The lady paid some dues, and then some, and still came through it all with grace, not to mention being universally regarded and respected. I don't know anyone, in any genre, walk of life, geographic area, whatever, who doesn't love Dolly. She's the best!
Dolly is fabulous. A bright light. You would like her collaborations with Linda Ronstadt, and Emmy Lou Harris as "Trio." There is a segment from a David Letterman show where they sang their version of Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush." No tricks just beautiful voices and perfect harmony.

My dad was and still is a country music fan. He would blare the stereo with Dolly, Glenn Campbell, Johnny Cash, etc. We didn't always love it then but I have grown to really appreciate how much of this stuff I know by heart and have fallen in love with all these years later.

I love that Dolly's character in the song doesn't burst into tears at the other kids' teasing, as most little girls would understandably do -- she stands her ground and calmly explains to them why they're COMPLETELY *WRONG.* Also, ironically a handcrafted crazy quilt coat like that would probably be very fashionable today. And lastly, James, here's a link to another ballad sung by Dolly called "Jolene", backed up the acappella group Pentatonix. Together they won a Grammy for this performance, and if you watch it you'll immediately understand why! :D

The movie you are talking about was a made for TV movie that came out in 2015 called 'Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors'. It told the true story of her childhood with a pretty good cast. There was also a sequel called 'Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors'. Both worth watching if you love Dolly.

Country music isn't country anymore... Dolly is Country... wrote her songs from life experiences. She's Dolly, true country, and flat out amazing. I was 4 yrs old when this came out.. but I believe it's still beautiful song.. maybe not relevant to most of us now.. in 2024 but I know my husband grew up dirt poor with his Mama making all his clothes and working on the farm.. he's 68 now.. a dying breed of farmers and women that had to work so hard. We have our 150 acre farm with the dogs and the chicken but we have them for enjoyment now.. we don't need them to survive like his family did back in the day.. I'm younger.. not saying I didn't work on a farm . I did.. but not nearly how hard he worked.. We are blessed now.. and I'm thankful. but I will never disrespect anyone that has gone through some really hard times .. some ppl do
