    Pure talent. No machines, no synthesizers just talent. You didn’t have it, you didn’t make it. Dolly wrote I Will Always Love You and had a hit with it before Whitney Houston was born.

    Neither Dolly nor her mother knew for certain what happened to the original coat. They assumed it was passed down, till it wore out or was taken apart & repurposed. After the success of the song, Dolly's mother made a "near duplicate", from her memory & the school pic Dolly had taken in it (which only shows the front, upper area of the coat). The replica is on display in the museum at Dollywood, along with a fancier version from the movie.

    My mother used to get really upset when she heard this song. Her mother used to get given coats by relatives, she used to unpick them and cut them down to make coats for the kids. My granny was a lovely lady, my grandad was a drinker and gambler, my tiny granny was a proper lady and far too good for him. Dolly sings this beautifully x

      Tell your little girl not to feel sorry for Dolly because Dolly didn't feel sorry for herself. That was all she knew and actually she was proud as a peacock to wear a coat to school that her mother had made for her because that made it extra special. I was raised very similar to the way Dolly was raised. We were as poor as church mice but what we did not want was for ANYONE to feel sorry for us and I'm pretty sure Dolly and her family would not want anyone to feel sorry for them either. They were "rich as could be" so if anything, people should envy her. Maybe when your child gets older she will understand that there is no reason to feel sorry for the little girl that was Dolly.

We'd love to have you come visit East TN, one of the friendliest places on Earth. She has always had a beautiful heart, she only owns Dollywood to supply poor kids with books and things they need. Last year she sent them 3 million books. She has also written award winning songs for other artists. I love her singing Apple Jack because that was a part of her childhood. Thank you.

    Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "I Will Always Love You", "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "9 To 5", "Here You Come Again" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums.

Awwww don't feel dumb or stupid, at least you're listening to our music now and you're enjoying it, try to pass it our music to future generations, that would mean the world to us older listeners.

    My Momma introduced this song, and Dolly Parton, to me when I was a young girl. The youngest of 6, I had my share of hand me downs. She told me how she had to wear her older brother's coat to school in high school. But her widowed Mother always filled their simple home with love. I brought up our children to not care about the "it" thing. It varies from generation to generation. Your worth comes from within not without. Dolly told a story which stands the test of time. God bless her. Thank you for sharing young man. 😽💋🎶

    Yes, she is beautiful, isn't she? I'm not sure when this concert was given, but _Coat of Many Colors_ was released in 1968, 1 year after her career-altering debut on the highly-successful Porter Wagoner Show (a collaboration that lasted 7 years), and 2 years after she was wed to Carl Dean, to whom she is still married 56 years later! I was in the 3rd grade in a small KY classroom the year this song hit the airwaves, when the primary meaning of the iconic phrase to most people was still the Bible story and not the country song. Dolly was looked at somewhat askance back in those days by many people in the Bible belt, with her glamorous hair, make-up and clothing, but mostly because of her figure. Many folks, who ought to have known better than to engage in idle gossip and speculation, theorized just exactly how someone who looked like her was climbing the country music charts so successfully. Well, all those old naysayers and scolds (any who are left) have been proven wrong. Her sense of style, flair and _panache_ isn't scandalous. Never was (or at least, never should have been). Dolly is the salt of the earth, as her songs such as this one make abundantly clear. The lady is a national treasure, who has given back in abundance.

      What did her figure have to do with the amount of talent she had? People can be so stupid sometimes. Some of those who thought that way were probably jealous of her.

    • @billparrish4385
      @billparrish4385 2 года назад +1

      @@MsAppassionata Or lusting after her, and transferring those sinful thoughts onto her. Remember it was the 60s, and not the hippy dippy 60s in the country genre, but the Mad Men 60s, where everyone in that office 'knew' what kind of woman Joan (Christina Hendricks) was, because of her upper torso.
      So, the country music business (or any genre) wasn't always the friendliest place for beautiful women. And you know what? All that makes me respect her that much more. The lady paid some dues, and then some, and still came through it all with grace, not to mention being universally regarded and respected. I don't know anyone, in any genre, walk of life, geographic area, whatever, who doesn't love Dolly. She's the best!

    Dolly is fabulous. A bright light. You would like her collaborations with Linda Ronstadt, and Emmy Lou Harris as "Trio." There is a segment from a David Letterman show where they sang their version of Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush." No tricks just beautiful voices and perfect harmony.

    I love that Dolly's character in the song doesn't burst into tears at the other kids' teasing, as most little girls would understandably do -- she stands her ground and calmly explains to them why they're COMPLETELY *WRONG.* Also, ironically a handcrafted crazy quilt coat like that would probably be very fashionable today. And lastly, James, here's a link to another ballad sung by Dolly called "Jolene", backed up the acappella group Pentatonix. Together they won a Grammy for this performance, and if you watch it you'll immediately understand why! :D

She's an astute businesswoman but has always used her fame to help others - check out her charity 'Imagination Library' - she gives millions of books a year to disadvantaged kids worldwide.
    *Check out* 'Down From Dover' - she had to fight to get the song on her album because it was deemed too 'controversial' - but she won! Such a relatable song, #LEGEND #GlobalTreasure

    Beautiful song with a beautiful message. Note that she had the strength of character to persist in her belief in her mother’s gift of love, even as the other kids laughed.
    Did I always have that same level of strength and belief when other kids would make fun of me for not having the more expensive brand clothes growing up (I was one of eight, so we often had hand-me-downs, or store brands like Sears)?
    No, I didn’t (even though I loved my parents and family).
    Dolly’s message here really is deep, and puts such a wonderful focus on what is truly important. I wonder how many people this song has helped to persist in challenging circumstances, despite such a materialistic world all around us. It’s such a beautiful anthem of love and appreciation for a mother’s love.

    Please check out another one of Dolly's song - Me and Little Andy. Talk about a story! Who-wee, grab some Kleenex first though, it's a rough one but so beautifully told by Miss Dolly.

    This quote by Maya Angelou has been shortened, but I love and try to live by the original. Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.”

    Just to let you know when she said "box of rags" she's taking about scraps of cloth not necessarily old towels.

    Have you reacted to Johnny Cash 'A Boy Named Sue'? if not....you should

      I second that suggestion! "A Boy Named Sue" is a classic, hilarious coming-of-age ballad with a great surprise twist. :D

    Another ballad you might like is The Charlie Daniels Band's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." It's hard-driving country music with phenomenal fiddle and guitar-playing, and the lyrics (chanted by Charlie) are absolutely bad*ss.

    Yes it is. They were very poor and they made clothes of rags and old material.
    I love the stories.
    Hope your doing well.

    If you want to react to songs that tell a story, this should keep you busy for a while.
    Johnny Cash-- Here Comes that Rainbow Again, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down, Cisco Clifton's Fillin' Station, I Hang My Head, A Boy Named Sue;
    George Jones--The Grand Tour, 50,000 Names, He Stopped Loving Her Today;
    The Statler Brothers--New York City, Bed of Rose's, Flowers on the Wall, Maple Street Memories;
    Bobbie Gentry--Ode to Billy Joe, Fancy;
    Reba McEntire--Somebody Should Leave, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia;
    Charlie Daniels--The Devil Went Down to Georgia;
    Hank Williams Sr--Be Careful of Stones that you Throw, Mansion on the Hill;
    Hank Williams Jr--A Country Boy Can Survive, Heaven Can't be Found, Rainin' in my Heart;
    Mel Tillis--Life Turner Her That Way, Ruby, Don't Take your Love to Town;
    Tanya Tucker--Delta Dawn, No Man's Land, Jamestown Ferry, What's Your Mama's Name;
    Kenny Rogers--Lucille, Coward of the County, The Gambler;
    Ray Stevens--Mississippi Squirrel Revival, It's Me Again, Margaret
    Brooks and Dunn--Believe, Boot Scootin Boogie;
    Loretta Lynn--Coal Miner's Daughter
    Merle Haggard--What Have you got Planned Tonight, Diana?, Sing Me Back Home;
    Dolly Parton--Joshua, Old Flames;
    The Judds--Grandpa (Tell me 'bout the good ole days), Young Love, Mama, He's Crazy;
    Non Country Songs:
    Smokie--Living Next Door to Alice
    Captain Hook and the Medicine Show--Sylvia's Mother
    Tom Jones--Delilah, Green Green Grass of Home
    If you like songs that tell stories, practically all OLD country songs told stories. Some of what passes for country music now, not so much.

    Country music isn't country anymore... Dolly is Country... wrote her songs from life experiences. She's Dolly, true country, and flat out amazing. I was 4 yrs old when this came out.. but I believe it's still beautiful song.. maybe not relevant to most of us now.. in 2024 but I know my husband grew up dirt poor with his Mama making all his clothes and working on the farm.. he's 68 now.. a dying breed of farmers and women that had to work so hard. We have our 150 acre farm with the dogs and the chicken but we have them for enjoyment now.. we don't need them to survive like his family did back in the day.. I'm younger.. not saying I didn't work on a farm . I did.. but not nearly how hard he worked.. We are blessed now.. and I'm thankful. but I will never disrespect anyone that has gone through some really hard times .. some ppl do
