    VIDEO SUMMARY: Having spent nearly three years saving money, the day came when I was ready to resign from my job and attempt to cycle around the world. I didn't have any experience in cycle touring and so I decided to complete a loop around Australia's southwest. This 'practice' ride brought me back home to Perth, where I spent some time finalising my bike setup before heading north towards Asia.
    Thanks for watching!

    I biked around most of the world over the past 5 years, including a 6 month stop volunteering at an orphanage in the Philippines and stopping to learn some Thai in Bangkok. It's a great thing to travel by bike but one mistake some people make is that they are so focussed on the mileage or completing a goal, that they often leave places they really enjoy, just to get to another place. Don't be afraid to stop and enjoy the places you visit even if it changes your plans for a short time. It's a big friendly world, enjoy it and good luck.

      Thanks! That is very good advice and I share your point of view. For me it's more about travel than cycling so experiences along the way are certainly more important than covering a certain distance.

    Awesome man! Best of luck! We look forward to keeping up with your adventure. We did an 18 day ride around Taiwan last fall. It was unreal. Check out Taiwan.

      Yes I have thought about Taiwan. It sounds like it has a perfect mix of culture and wilderness. And it would be my first choice as a place to teach English, should I decide to do that when I run out of money. Thanks for the well wishes!!!!

    Thanks for the vids. Do you have any advice on cycling on the WA roads where there are no bike paths and you have to share it with speeding cars and trucks as I've just moved to Byford and kinda worried about cycling on the South Western Highway to get to Armadale. Is that the part you did in your journey? Thanks and kind regards.

      No worries! I haven't cycled in that area but I have had my fair share of busy WA roads. I wouldn't want to spend much time on the SW Hwy though...that's one busy road! WA drivers are generally inconsiderate so safety management while cycling is a one-sided affair. I have found grey nomads towing caravans to be more threatening than trucks. Road trains need about five metres of free space either side for trailer sway so be sure to be well out of their way. Trucks have a surprising amount of suck and blow power too. Attach a mirror to your bike so you always know what's coming and can get off the road if need be. (Stick to back roads if possible!)

    How'd the Santos bike hold up after your travels and is it still in use? I think I recall reading on your blog that you were getting it welded at some point?

    • @BudgieEscapee
      @BudgieEscapee  4 года назад

      It's a brilliant bike. I plan to continue using it. I've had my Tubus racks welded. As for the bike, I did take it to a welder in Kazakhstan in the hope they could help me remove a rack bolt that had sheared off, leaving a piece of it stuck in the frame. Nothing to do with issues with the bike itself. (The sad result of this was that the person who I assumed was competent enough to help actually damaged my bike frame. I continued using it with a makeshift solution, but I still need to sort out a way to strengthen the frame where it was damaged).

      @@BudgieEscapee nice I ended up getting a disc trucker, kinda regret it and wish I had waited and saved up a bit more cashola for a belt drive, but yeh next time I guess

    Ah you're carrying lots of unnecessary things like I did at the beginning of my trip and still do at some degree. No worries you'll find yourself ditching things as you go on with your journey!
