U didn't break that clip. The plastic tip on the back side of the panel "bites" into that metal portion of the clip that's in the pillar. Next time pluck the metal clip out and install it on the plastic tip and it will snap back into place.

Where did you go thru the firewall in the engine compartment?
You actually have to go to the side of the rubber firewall to get it through, its extremely difficult. You need a metal fish tape!

I like them! I haven't decided if I miss my CTS2 or not yet. Edge did just come out with an update to support the 2020s so I may fire it up and compare!
