I heard this played outdoors while on a lunch break by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The musician who played the typewriter was from the percussion section of the orchestra and usually played the kettledrums.
Yeah skilled percussionist. His rhythm was absolutely perfect and controlled on the fast bits. I have seen a London orchestra do this and apparently it was the glockenspiel/xylophone player who did this. But hard to say what these guys actually play, because they are usually skilled at a ton of different instruments. And usually very skilled at not playing but coming in just on time (counting rests). That can be even more difficult!
There's something to be said regarding technique in 'playing' the typewriter without jamming it. I practiced about 60 yrs ago. One needs long strong fingers, which I don't have. Was happy when keyboards were developed.😎
I was a typist and was so impressed with this when training and we trained to music. When we could get up to the " William Tell Overture " our tutor would say that we were ready to be typists. That is if we had copied the words correctly we were on our way to being copy typists.
