both :) Also, need to add the XSR900 to the mix just to further confuse us all. FTR is just such a cool looking bike, have you seen FortNine's review of the FTR?
The MT09 is better value for money for sure, and Yamaha make awesome bikes.. But I wouldn't turn around to look at the Yamaha after parking it in my garage. That's the difference.
I have an mt-09 and totally agree haha. They are a pretty amazing bike for the money though. Especially with all the rider modes etc. A person could literally get one as their first bike and just so long as they had the basics and self control drive mode 4 is shockingly tame.
I think the main reason that the FTR is more expensive than something like the Yamaha MT-09 is the fact that the MT-09 is built overseas with less expensive labor and the FTR is built here in the US at the Spirit Lake, Iowa factory and mostly by hand. Yamaha makes an amazing bike but I prefer the less refined, visceral, raw feeling of the FTR and how it feels almost like a muscle bike than anything else.
I just bought a 2023 FTR carbon a couple months ago, I just walked into the Indian dealer and I had no idea what it was but it called my name. The carbon fiber with the color of the Ohlins suspension, the bike makes you kinda itch and tweak to ride it. 20 minutes after I first saw it, I was buying it. there's so many aftermarket mods you can put on it to make it better and go even faster. I deleted the rear fender and Christmas light turning signals with something more inconspicuous, Then I slapped a quick shifter on and then a full Toce low mount exhaust (without baffles of course) with a Loydz Garage tune and I swear to all that is holy that I have the baddest and meanest bike on the road in California.
I thought a quick shifter was supposed to allow you to bang the next gear without letting off the gas. I noticed that the way you shifted on the MT-09 is the same as how I shift my 2019 FTR. No clutch, let off a little, and select the next gear, but I don't have a quick shifer.
Yikes there is $7450 price difference between the MT09 and FTR Carbin. I'd probably go with the base model FTR which is cheaper. MT09 is probably best naked for the price, but not fan of the headlight.
Dude I feel you but I just can't get past the looks Indian is so much better looking than Mt 09 I probably bring it to bed with me at night lol and the Yamaha so freaking ugly. And everybody that has one seems to love them the Indian. For that I probably would go with the Indian.
I ride a 2014 DL1000A (V Strom). Love it for cruising the gravel forest roads in my AO. It is a heavy beast though. Wish someone would make a lighter gravel/street bike.
If you are a specs/budget guy, mt09 all day. If you go based on feel and how a motorcycle speaks to you, it's a toss up. FTR speaks to me in more of my passion. Also, your wheelie skills are insane. I'm way too scared to get to the balance point or beyond. Mine are wimpy and i'll keep it that way.
I'm also willing to bet insurance will be a bit cheaper for the FTR. Far less of those on the road and barely any of them get found pulling wheelies or running from the cops like the MT-09 is famous for.
Had a 2023 FTR Carbon R for 6 months. Unfortunately it was a massive piece of junk and was in the shop more than I rode it. Sold ot and bought a 2023 Kawasaki Z H2 SE and never looked back.
I’d say the MT09, ftr is heavier, and REALLY quick. There’s rain mode, but I think the Nanny’s on the MT are a big help to newbies between power adjustment, wheelie control (selectable levels), abs control, and traction ctrl . I have the FTR but it’s my 2nd bike, I was close to choosing the MT, but that FTR was beautiful inside and out.
If you have self control the mt-09 yes. Put it in drive mode 4 (rain mode) and it pulls power and throttle response enough you could learn on it. Plus it's so light super easy to handle. The problem is most people don't have self control or overestimate their abilities too soon and would crank it up. Full on the bike is stupid fast. Even with wheelie control maxed on mode 1 (full power) you can't full brap it or you're front tire is going in the sky.
Love the FTR! So much more torque and with a tune, you can really make it run. I'd take the FTR any day, 2023 or newer. It feels a lot more Hooligan and rowdy. I do wish there was a stock quickshifter. It's also east to get 150 mph just by killing the speed limiter. It's just rough and rowdy for sure compared to the MT-09.
If i only had enough to buy a mt09 sp id be perfectly happy with it cuz your not really looking at it while you ride. But if i had enough to get the ftr carbon.. thats the 1 thats got my eye and id be proud to look at and ride. Probably het more random people saying sweet bike to the ftr too. They just killed it with the styling. If i was still 20 id go mt09 sp no question prolly put a turbo on it too lol but now being a dad of 3. I think id make better choices and just enjoy the ride more at slightly slower speeds on the ftr.
Indian for sure, unfortunately $ always plays a part in a lot of our decisions.. I’m just stoked riding my 08 nightster I just bought a few months ago for 2500$
I’ve owned Both. The FTR has more character and is more visceral and raw. Bikes aren’t about spec sheets. They are about how they make u feel. This is why the FTR wins for me. I tried a 2023 XSR 900 for mine with no regrets.
The more i look up about this bike the more i realize it’s just a sport cruiser. I saw a video where even the super hooligan in motoamerica doesnt handle perfect and is hard to ride on the edge of the tire. Sick bike tho. Only American bike id get once i got old
I’ve ridden triples before but I always come back to a Twin cylinder no matter what, so the Indian would be a great fit because of the rotax Vtwin that’s in it like my 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille with a rotax engine 🤌🏾
What evidence do you have to support your claim that the Indian Vtwin is made by Rotax? Cite your source. ruclips.net/video/MQgis63r2r8/видео.htmlsi=8sOQYmyE3SoR_lkA
No comparison. The indian isblike double the price id rather have an 09 and another bike or the cash in my pocket than an indian which is very mildy more premium
MT09, like the XSR900 (prior to the updated model XSR900), isn't a true 900cc engine, but an 847cc. My XSR900 is the 2017 model and a blast to ride. After three years of ownership - being second owner - I'm now mulling over if it's time to let her go? It's just a shame the OEM exhaust for the XSR900 is so damned heavy (20 or so pounds). It's definitely a city bike and not one for long sustained commuter journeys, as the exhaust note of an after market exhaust will eventually kill your eardrums.
Which would you pick?
both :) Also, need to add the XSR900 to the mix just to further confuse us all. FTR is just such a cool looking bike, have you seen FortNine's review of the FTR?
Just picked up a 15' FZ-09 haha

@@Jarednelson31 that's what I have....bought it new....great bike.
The FTR S called my name…. A few days later I bought it and many months down the road I have zero regrets
My favorite bike is usually whatever I happen to be riding at any given time.
Bingo ❤
Same (I just want a bike)
The MT09 is better value for money for sure, and Yamaha make awesome bikes..
But I wouldn't turn around to look at the Yamaha after parking it in my garage. That's the difference.
Love that last you said, cause it's true. I have a 2019 FTR and sometimes go outside to the shed where it's parked and just watch it for a minute.. ☺
Exactly. Perfectly put.
That was my ultimate decision to go FTR. The mt09 is pretty AND fast AND cheaper…. But i like the ftr 😂
Exactly bro! 🎉😎👍
I have an mt-09 and totally agree haha. They are a pretty amazing bike for the money though. Especially with all the rider modes etc. A person could literally get one as their first bike and just so long as they had the basics and self control drive mode 4 is shockingly tame.
God that FTR is so beautiful tho, definitely gives it a distinctive edge.
I've had the FTR Carbon since April 2023. What an incredible bike. And the looks it gets with all the carbon is pretty cool.
What about… XSR900? It has a longer swingarm now. Easier to keep the front end down.
I've got the FZ09 and love it, but would love to test out the FTR for sure
I traded a streetbob 107 for a 22 FTR S, absolutely love it.
I think the main reason that the FTR is more expensive than something like the Yamaha MT-09 is the fact that the MT-09 is built overseas with less expensive labor and the FTR is built here in the US at the Spirit Lake, Iowa factory and mostly by hand. Ohhhh my, it sounds beautiful
My insurance company considers the FTR a "cruiser," and it's almost half the cost to insure than the MT-09.
I thought a quick shifter was supposed to allow you to bang the next gear without letting off the gas. I noticed that the way you shifted on the MT-09 is the same as how I shift my 2019 FTR. No clutch, let off a little, and select the next gear, but I don't have a quick shifer.
To shift up you have to be on the gas at least 15%. So he could at full throttle if he wanted to. To downshift have to be off the gas all the way.
I'd rather have an FTR, but the MK1 basic version with the flat track size wheels and round non-TFT clock. I like basic bikes.
The FTR are excellent bikes! Very underrated
Love the look and sound of the ftr, but concerned about getting 50k miles with little maintenance, as my FZ09 did.
What is the FTR? is it the 17" wheels? Or the older 18/19?
Yikes there is $7450 price difference between the MT09 and FTR Carbin. I'd probably go with the base model FTR which is cheaper. MT09 is probably best naked for the price, but not fan of the headlight.
MT09 for me...weight, quickshifter, and bang for the buck!
Dude I feel you but I just can't get past the looks Indian is so much better looking than Mt 09 I probably bring it to bed with me at night lol and the Yamaha so freaking ugly. And everybody that has one seems to love them the Indian. For that I probably would go with the Indian.

Nice review Jon. Love the FTR!

Indian exudes beauty and personality but MT-09 exudes reliability and rideability
I could never get use to how the FTR looks. And with the weight difference I’d go for the Yamaha.
Dude what are you talking about I think it's one of the hottest bikes on a planet looks wise anyway the yamaha's one of the ugliest bikes.
@@richardcerritelli9657 cool
@@richardcerritelli9657 I agree lol
Why does nobody put shorty pipes on a FTR , no muffler
I'm also willing to bet insurance will be a bit cheaper for the FTR. Far less of those on the road and barely any of them get found pulling wheelies or running from the cops like the MT-09 is famous for.

What year is this Mt-09?
If money is no object, I’ll take the FTR. Since money is always an object, I would buy the Yamaha and love it!
Could you take a msf course and use any one of these as a brand new beginner?
I’d say the MT09, ftr is heavier, and REALLY quick. My heart says FTR1200 but my brain says MT09 due to my novice skill level. Happy with my choice
I love my FTR!!!!
ive got the gen 1 street triple but plan on getting the scout bobber in the future as well .i'llhave the best of both worlds.😆

Why do the streets and buildings where you ride always look so quiet and empty?
My FTR can sit in my living room and I'd be ok. Its art that I just happen to be able to ride like a bandit.
Indian for sure, unfortunately $ always plays a part in a lot of our decisions.. I’m just stoked riding my 08 nightster I just bought a few months ago for 2500$
FTR for me... It just a different look and a bit a power to go along with it.
i would always pick the 3-cylindre ...
Newer yamaha headlights are ugly imo on mt series, great bikes though
Thanks for the reviews!! Are you in phx?
Thanks, brotha! Yup, east valley. 💯🤙
@Jon's Moto Garage hell yea I'll keep an eye out for ya!! I was trying to make out where you were riding in your ftr video it looked like the casino .
I bought the base FTR cause it needs several mods and riding modes are for amateurs!
The FTR wins. But against the MT10...🤔
❤❤❤
XSR900... or an older Monster 1100 Evo...

I can't find a '08 Kawasaki 6r ninja anywhere...smh
The reason MT09 wins is because it’s easy to handle, corner and flick and have FUN 🤩.
FTR Carbon for me please.
Decat (just decat, keep the stock Akra can) the FTR & trust me 🥲 … you will love it even more
If you're ever feeling like Indian might be a good option. Look at the prices of their accessories.
Ftr looks good
AWESOME VIDEO AMAZING SUPERB TOP

Funny that you have a brutale 750 pfp then lol. Out of curiosity, have you ridden one, and if so, how did you like it?

FTR for sure.
Like a big, juicy steak vs. chef salad. Lol.
The only thing better about the Indian is it's looks. Indian looks better that's it
No bike looks as good as the FTR, especially the MT
Really like that 900 triple but the looks are a turn-off. The FTR looks great but you pay a lot for that.
zeg gewoon dat je een jamaha wil. Je hebt het heel de tijd over de yamaha
No comparison. The indian isblike double the price id rather have an 09 and another bike or the cash in my pocket than an indian which is very mildy more premium

Both useless for tall ppl😂🎉🎉🎉
Test ride a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE. Awesome bike for tall people and has the supermoto vibe as well.
im 6' 3" and love the FTR
I’m 6’ 2” with a 34” inseam and am very comfortable on my mt09
The 2019 ftr is a very tall bike
6'5" and the MT-09 fits great. However, you better know what you're doing and be disciplined.
FTRs a wanna be naked bike not sorry 😅🤣🤣
Only problem i have with this bike is that it's over 500lbs wet.
Yamaha xsr 900 i would choose chepar faster and looks better 🦾
