Jemma thanks so much for uploading this, it means so much to me. Yes these are old fashioned bells but they are to me at least THE SOUND OF LONDON. in rang here for the first time in 1967,I was 14 and just got in to the ASCY. My dad was a bell hanger for Whitechapel. On Saturdays dad use to ring the ellecombe chime and r the banger the other bell above the 12 Well that was a long time ago and a long way from where I live now down under.
Beautifully restored they should last up there for at leat another 140 years as they where first hung in 1878 and after all that time where in danger of faling from their barings, plus years of london grime on them, they should stay cleaner now as less pollution, i would live to see these bells in actually, i have seen liverpools but that is quite easy!
@@AshleyMonckNot quite right. Surprise/Delight/Bob etc are categories of method, but a principle does not fall under the method umbrella. A method must have the treble bell performing a different piece of work to the working bells (plain hunting, treble bobbing), rather in a principle all the bells perform the same work, so it is a separate thing. There are very few principles rung these day, only Stedman, Erin, and occasionally Original)
Niels van der Giessen the bells themselves are unchanged. It was only the fittings that were modernised in order to preserve the sound, and the ability to ring the bells to the standard we do.
@@NielsvanderGiessen hello Neil Yes the cannons were cut off although the heavier bells were cut off along time ago. The bells were not tuned and so glad they weren't. St Pauls bells are old school pre simpson tuned and there sound is unique, it is to me the sound of London, the sound of victory the sound of my birth place. To have tuned them would to me be sacrilegious.
@@NielsvanderGiessen 100% correct. Whilst i love the sound of heavy simpson tuned bells, St Pauls is special Some say some of the bells sound like scaffolding being dropped, maybe so, but I think of the dark days of London, the blitz, Churchill etc. Iladt went to St Pauls in 2000 and they were being refurbished then with new wooden headstocks. I saw Great,Paul and videod it. I seem to have the only youtube footage of of it You may have seen it.
That’s the ‘banger’, and it’s got an electronic chiming hammer so the Cathedral can trigger it when the ringers are not in. It’s hung for ringing, not easy to do, but can be done. It’s 18cwt.

A lovely sound with the half muffles and a lovely Method, or principle to be precise :-)
BigPinkJohn a principle is a type of method. The same thing with suprise. You wouldn’t say Cambridge is a surprise and not a method
Ashley Monck true just saying that steadman is always referred to correctly as a principle rather than a method.

Great ringing and amazing audio! Did you use an external microphone for this recording?
Sorry for the late comment! Not external mic, just the mic from my iPhone!

that, @@nickpodas5636, is the service/communion bell, which was nicknamed the "Banger"
