- MSU Police said early Tuesday morning that 43-year-old Anthony McRae was confronted by law enforcement before he died. He has no known links to the university.
According to an ABC News source, a confidential briefing with law enforcement and the FBI reported that McRae had walked from his home to the MSU campus.

If the shooter had a history of mental health issues, where did he get the gun he used to kill 3 MSU students?
Why was he allowed to shoot off rounds at his home in the summer?
I'd say law enforcement is understaffed and wasn't able to keep tabs on him. We need more law enforcement and they need to be allowed to do their jobs, most importantly.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful gun possession misdemeanor (and since there are no victims and it was his first infraction with the law, he only served probation, just like every person regardless of color would had in Michigan. Even if he was found guilty of the more serious charge, he still would have got probation or maybe a few months in jail.
Random gun violence is a plague on USA. This shooting hurts more than hearing about high death tolls from natural disasters (like Turkey's Earthquakes). Losing a round against nature? I can swallow that. However, premeditated murder of innocent people, plus terrorizing thousands others, yea, that hurts way more. Schools, unlike restaurants or clubs, can't shutdown or leave to bury painful memories. They have to resume working to fulfill their missions.

But I do think the USA passed the point of no return, and now that guns are widespread, law abiding citizens should keep them. But if I will refigure the country from the start, I would make it more like Canada and no 2nd amendment in it. (BTW, the Supreme Court stretched that meaning).

If the killer had mental health problems why did his dad allow him to have guns in the house? If your kid, adult or not, lives with you and isn't right in the head, then you don't keep guns around!

Reported or not, it won't make any difference. Police need a psychiatric evaluation report. Most states don't cover that. That's why they are trying to pass mental health care.

This is a true tragedy. The shooter picked a place where he knew that no one would be carrying a weapon, where there is no armed security. This is what happens when you make an area a gun free zone. The coward who committed this atrocity was not there randomly. He knew he could go on the campus, shoot as many as he wanted, and there would be no one to stop him. Gun free zones will continue to attract the mentally damaged like this example.
Definitely the answer would have been to have at least 1/2 the students armed, so they could have all shot each other as they tried to determine what was going on, who was the shooter.
I live in a city with a university campus approx the same size as MI.
When some off campus gun advocates tried to make it legal to bring guns onto campus, there was immediate resistance from educators, students, and staff employed on campus.
As it is, probably 1/2 the shooting deaths in the U.S. happen because someone get's so angry at someone, something they lose their sense of reason, and instead of looking for a less lethal means of conflict resolution, they reach for a loaded gun.
Have you noticed how many males/husbands have murdered their partners/wives, and kids recently, then often turn the gun on themselves?

I have & you have to have a doctor prove that they are a physical threat to themselves or others. Then you have to go to court & prove this to a judge. So you've got to find people or yourself your have physically been threatened, have it on your phone, texts or on paper in writing. This is not easy to reach the level of proof because most people are clever enough to explain it away by saying that they were not serious.

Say I walk into a building and killed 43 people. All you would know about me would be my name and my back criminal history. For some police policy reason, they will never read the note I would have left behind explaining why I did what I did. They wouldn't want society to know that the reason was new owners took over the apartment building I lived in for over 20 years and force everybody out leaving everybody homeless, and the building I shot up was the company that did it.

Why can't AI be used in some capacity to detect unauthorized intruders on school grounds? Now that would be a super valuable use of technology vs being able to write essays and other useless sh*t! I'm sure Apple would be all in to create special use technology. e.g. Maybe students would be issued and possess a unique Air Tag as a means of authorization to be on campus. Visitors would have to register and be issued a temp Tag. Any unauthorized movement detected by AI that doesn't emit the proper signal would trigger a silent notification and location in the school police department's HQ whereby deputies would be sent to investigate This may not resolve all problems but it could help thwart mass shootings
