I've been searching for the right pattern for a quilt for my son. He's a third year mechanical engineering student!! What's even more amazing is that I actually found the fabric here in my hometown in Canada. Thanks!
Have been watching your for years. You have grown. This quilt blows me away. I also do machine embroidery. I am imagining my steam punk designs from Urbin Threads. Just my preference. I will keep watching you. Older ladies are cool and interesting. 🙃
This is such a wonderful quilt for men. There needs to be more designs for men, like tools, firemen, policemen, fishing, hunting, hammers and nails and other tools. All the traditional ones are still beautiful but I go for more whimsical and creative type of stuff and I love applique. Really nice quilt, Rob!!!
When I saw this, I thought perfect design for my mechanical engineer son. Also, I do appreciate the lesson on how you sorted the color. My last art class was in 1978.
SO impressed by your use of both high contrast AND LOW-CONTRAST blocks! I've never seen anyone before recognize the importance of these two groups, and use them both in one quilt so effectively! Thank you very very much for making such an excellent example! I am inspired and will use this tutorial often. :D
You solved my problem in making my daughters boyfriend a Christmas present a couple years ago. He is a creator and designer in mechanics and when I saw the gears I knew this was perfect. I printed out my designs from your templates and with a LOT of cutting, etc I designed my own layout. He loved his wall hanging. Thank you Rob.
I love steam punk and I am 70 years old!! I've only seen one of your videos with Jennie, and your quilts really intrigue me. I do not have a Sissix so thank you for alternate ways to cut the gears. There are websites with steam punk machine and hand embroidery too. I'll be following you from now on! Thanks for making my day!
I am a big fan of Steampunk ! I love this quilt. I am going to have to check out the Sizzix die for the gears. I do paper crafting also and the papers for Steampunk are awesome. I think with some imagination and your skills you could convert the designs into other quilts. You are a great example of what you can do if you just try. You are also very entertaining.
Wow what fantastic class! I learned more about tricks with contrast prep and I love gears. Amazing, still fresh info even in 2017. Rob, you are man ahead of his time.
This is a great quilt. My husband and son are always so supportive of my quilting and this is such an unusual quilt that fits in to our everyday lives. This will be such a great project for their farm offices. Thanks for this great presentation!
I just recently looked up 'steam punk' myself, not wanting to ask my son what yet another thing means..LOL. Anyhow, the vid of yours that I just watched before this had a bit that reminded me of steam punk art, and then this one...LOL. I love the way you do your color gradients, from dark at the bottom left and light at the top right. That's the way I always see gradients too. Thanks for the tutorial, it's an awesome looking quilt!
Wow, going to make this for my son who loves this kind of stuff! He took me for a ride on his big motorbike, shouting go granny go, and I loved it! So now paying him back with this quilt, thanks Rob! xx
If you don't have a die cutter but do have a Cameo Silhouette, you can use the Picscan mat to take a digital snapshot of the gear print out, or even input the PDF and make it a cut file, then you can just use a fabric blade to cut through the fabric and heat-bond material, easy peasy "die cut" applique pieces! Thanks for a cool tutorial Rob! My boys and husband always love your quilts!
Absolutely LOVE your program!!! I think the best tip EVER was the one about using large clips to hold the backing fabric to the table. It works like a charm every time!!!
Wow! I learned so much from this tutorial--especially on color and color placement in a quilt. I can't wait to try the shading of colors in a quilt using the 5 inch pinwheels and shading in applique. I don't see myself using the gears in my quilts, but something different for shaded applique. I have already watched this video 2x and see it as a great resource! Thank you, Rob!!
Never gave steam punk much thought, but I LOVE this quilt!! It is going pretty high up on my quilty to do list! Thanks so much for another great tutorial! You absolutely make my Monday mornings and get my day off to a great start with your humor, creativity and energy! :)
LoveLoveLove this quilt! I'm almost done with mine. It's taken me a while...I'm sewing it in secret for my hubby's birthday on 2-13! Thank you for this tutorial, Rob, and all of your inspiring videos!
Had a great morning today! I’ve been looking forward to your visit so much! I am so sorry I had to leave early. Was not feeling very well! Thank you so much for a great Class. The Villages.
Love, Love, LOVE this quilt! You are so creative! I was never really a fan of steam punk - until now. This is such a cool design, and your video is awesome. I learned so much about color, gradations, shadows, wow... And your fabric choice... Wow! I can't wait to try this one myself!
HOT DIGGITY on the Steampunk Design Rob....I knew when I came on that this was Steampunk....love it....Tim HOltz is a big steampunk artist with scrapbooking and cardmaking. Love this...GREAT TUTE.....I just got my BIG SHOT PLUS machine yesterday....and now will try to get these dies as well.....love this stuff... Thanks for a great tute from ManSewing.....STEAMPUNK Rocks!!! Ken
Once again another great tutorial. Here's a tip for people without a rotating cutting board - use a small cutting board, large enough to cut the blocks on, then just rotate the board after each cut :)
+Lesley Gilbert you meant cutting mat, right? I don't think your blades would like a cutting board! Good tip. Thanks. BTW, I like the Olfa rotating mat a lot. I find the ballbearing type that Rob and Jenny use moves too easily when I cut. Must be a trick to using it that I didn't find
+MrsMTMomma - Yes, sorry, I meant cutting mat :) I also have a rotating mat. I read a comment on a sewing blog a few months ago that said if you have a large mat coming to the end of it's life, you could cut it up into smaller pieces and use as a rotating mat. Thanks for your reply :)
Can't wait to make this quilt! I turned inside out when I saw it, just ordered the same fabric as shown. You put it together so well with the sandscape and gray-matter colors. Thanks for your hard work, Lesley
*SQUEEE* I LOVE THIS QUILT!!!! You have SUCH a killer, artistic approach to all of your quilts, that totally blows me away. Not just the gradient color changes that create movement, but the attention to your "light source" and the addition of the subsequent shadows and their placement, are all fanTAStically artistic details, with huge wow factor. AND it's created in that trademark MSQC, omg I can totally do this at home like Rob(or Jenny) just did it type fashion!! I would love to be a fly on the wall to watch your creative process when you are designing quilts. Fanfreakingtastic tutorial and positively gorgeous quilt. Thanks for being awesome!!
+Cheryl Land PS!! I love the fusion with the traditional broken dishes, with the modern gears...THAT itself is totally steampunk. (You might have guessed I"m into Steampunk?!?! lololol.) We did a Nor Cal wedding and So Cal wedding, both of which I crafted almost everything for. lol. One was full on Star Wars themed and costumed, the other a steampunk, Star Wars, Haunted Mansion, Disney fusion...I couldn't be more in love with this quilt (and the Star Warsiness of your last tut)...it speaks to the weirdness of my soul. lol
I want to thank you for this tutorial! It gave me an idea on how to use some awesome charm packs from MSQ that I had bought. I had never considered a gradient approach to quilting. So not only do I plan on making this quilt someday- it helped me step out of a rut and look at my fabrics differently. Thanks!!!
And that was a great tip about sewing off the ends! I was pivoting and the squares were better NOT pivoting! Rebecca ( the one with the flag jacket) safe travels!
Steampunk, I love it! As someone mentioned earlier, Tim Holtz, you will definitely have to check him out Rob. PLUS..... He has a fabric line and MSQC sells it! Yea!! Love your videos Rob!
WOW another great tutorial!! When you said steampunk it reminded me of this one site for embroidery called Urban Threads. They have a lot of cool steam punk. I LOVE your quilt and for someone that didn't know what steam punk was I would say you NAILED it perfectly!! that is great. If you get time check out Urban Threads and see what there steam punk looks like. See you next Monday. I can hardly wait.
OK, first of all, I don't even know how to comment on this tutorial today! I couldn't even get my brain wrapped around all the great information you gave! The way you explained the colors of the background how to weave the light into the dark was amazing, and the concept of the shadows away from the light on the gears, wow! Your brain is so cool. The "fun" and amusing parts just give my brain a chance to "rest" from the next concept you introduce, and I am going to have to replay this one a few times so I don't miss all the wonderful techniques you "seam" lessly weave into your design concepts. You are way beyond just simple construction, into big thoughts on how you tackle your designs. Wow! Thanks again, you take me outside the box every time! I just learned what Steam Punk was from one of my dental patients a few weeks ago, and I feel so old! Lol! Have a great week!
Thank you so so so much, Carol! This comment made my day!! I'm so glad you liked this tutorial and learned something from it! Don't feel old, steam punk is an older thing, so you should feel young! :)
I really like this idea, between the ombre style piecing and the industrial gears, it just a really cool idea that actually seems doable when you break it down like that, thanks :)
This is the first of your work that I have watched, and I am so happy that I did! Love your presentation! I am a recently retired now I can learn to quilt girl and I have three grown sons. It does seem like there are a lot more "girl" quilts than "guy" quilts out there. This is a wonderful artistic "guy" quilt! Looking forward to watching more on your work!
Hey I'm a fan of Steampunk - well, at least the little bit that I have been exposed to (Terry Pratchett - great books your kids will love). Even if you hadn't introduced this as steampunk, I was drawn in to the picture of that quilt instantly! I love the color scheme and your explanation of the process is top notch. I just might take this one on... after I finish the other 40 ideas you have give me :)
Love this tutorial! I used it as inspiration for my own steampunk quilt i will be donating for a raffle in my town. Wish i could post a pic of it but haven't figured it out yet. Thank you! Your quilt is beautiful!
I love this one! I love the gears! I'm making a black/grey/white jelly roll race quilt for a biker and I'm thinking adding a couple of these gears might just jazz it up! Thank you!
The gears totally rock!! Awesome quilt! It should go in MSQC's Man Cave hang-out when construction is done! :) Oh yeah, thanks for the printable; I'm sending it to my printer now!
Dude, you just made my week! I'm a metalhead with a soft spot for Steampunk (yes, its a music style too. Check out Abney Park, awesome band. Aether Shanties is a great album). This is going to the top of my list- I LOVE that. Soon as I saw the gears I flipped out.
Loved the video and this quilt is fabulous! I retired from a machine shop with 300 employees last year and our President is expecting a baby this summer and this will make a perfect baby quilt!! Where can I get printout of the gears for appliqué? Thank you, great teaching!
Love the quilt. I have been toying with the idea of a galaxy quilt for my grandson....I noticed on MSQC that the fabric also comes in dark blue...perfect then I can applique the planets on. Since it is for his bed I will have to make it larger...what are the dimensions of your quilt so I can enlarge proportionately....didn't see the size listed. Great idea thanks...Love your Tutorials.....Barb
+Barbara Frangella You can figure that the HST blocks are 6 1/4" and count them out on Rob's quilt. Or go to Quilter's Cache and look for the Broken Dishes block. I like your idea for the planet quilt. He should love it!
Thanks so much a great quilt. My husband and I own a welding and repair business. Use lots of gears and sprockets. He will love his Christmas present. Now will he let me stay home and quilt--that is the question.
Wow Rob I love this and it fits my youngest son perfectly...he will love it!!! I do have one question. The top thread is polyester, did you use cotton in the bobbin? Thank you for your great talent and willingness to share!
This is great art and an awesome steampunk quilt, even got my husband interested in this, whom I have been trying to get to quilt with me, ordered materials today, unfortunately the fabric is out of stock, had to pick new theme colors, once the squares are cut and sewn, what is the finished dimension of the broken dish plate you made, does it end up at 8 inches or 9 inches square?
looking for a John deer tractor block. Do you have any ideas? would love a tutorial on how to make a block. enjoy watching your tutorials. Thank you Sandy

Génial!

I absolutely love this quilt!!! This is quite a showstopper. I hope you show it at a quilt show or expo.
I'm sure it'll travel with me for teaching, I'm glad you liked it! Thanks a million!
You're welcome. I will have to put something really special in my bucket list. Attending one of your classes!!!

Lucky devil
Having that big shot lol !
I'll be hand cutting mine 😫
Hey maybe you need an etsy shop and you could sell the gears !!!
Wow this is amazing!
I love this quilt
He should love it!
great for steam punk and mechanics 😉
Thanks for watching!!
great tutorial I love the quilt.
Thanks so much!!
Thanks so much a great quilt. My husband and I own a welding and repair business. Use lots of gears and sprockets. He will love his Christmas present. Now will he let me stay home and quilt--that is the question.
That's so sweet!! Glad you liked this one, please send pictures of your project, I would love to see!
awesome quilt
Love Love Love This!
Thank you for this. I love it.
looking for a John deer tractor block. Do you have any ideas? would love a tutorial on how to make a block. enjoy watching your tutorials. Thank you Sandy
My blocks "percolate" on the design wall for a couple of days before they're sewn together. As you say, walk by and look at it numerous times.
+Judy Hart Me too!! I wander in and out and look it, change here and there maybe several times before I'm "done"!
That's really the best way to do it, I'm always happiest when I do it that way!
Judy Hart .
that is so awesome!
Another fantastic quilt, Rob! Where can I find one of those bodacious rotating-lazy-susan-cutting mats? Thanks for all the great tutorials!
Here's a link to get that mat! You'll LOVE it! land.mansewing.com/gears-quilt/
